Halo 3 wins an E3 award!

Halo 2 reveal is probably one of the best moments in gaming for me, it blew everyone away. Not getting that vibe from Halo 3.

But then, i felt like this about MGS3, which turned out to be the best MGS yet.

Operation "Bring Back Prine" begins next week.

Not a reveal, just an attempt to bring Prine back.

Halo3 Wins beeches!! oh wait.

Sadly attempt at getting hits. Whats next? Why the Wii is not selling? Why PS3 is not next gen? Why Xbox Live is the crappiest online offering? Surprise me.
All those would be bizzare and ironic. However halo3 being a disapointment at E3 is not so far off just by looking at GAF E3 threads. All the 360 fans went with CoD4 as their favorite game shown.

Yeah the fact that Halo 3 wasn't really shown... might have something to do with this.

Halo 3 single player walkthrough to be shown to the public next week confirmed. I hope it's going to be put up on marketplace.

Killzone 2 seemed to have very little problems with that same issue. Quite the opposite. In GAF anyway.

Um Killzone 2 was shown...

all we got from Halo 3 was a poorly cut trailer... we didn't get any videos of an actual demo.

Let's not get our tits in a knot just yet.

There'll be plenty of stuff to chew on with EGM's impending release (things the photos didn't capture), I think the expectation of the demo footage is interesting, but unlikely. The content in the campaign trailer and the sound clip was personally enough for me in the next two months, probably too much actually - I'd like some visual surprises to be had on the actual release date.

Also, an Update written after EGM's Update a month ago mentioned EGM was filming a Humpday Challenge match. If they could record that, odds are good they recorded other stuff. And given the 1up blowout that went alongside the first EGM Halo 3 cover, I'm expecting some coverage there as well.

Good call.

If thats the case, the internet might get a good idea of how far the graphics have come, even in multiplayer. Singleplayer still looks best, but the multiplayer recording they showed to demo the movie-making feature looked significantly sharper and more detailed than anything in the beta.

Hey Luke, are you actually letting people play the single player campaign for the KROQ contest here in L.A., or is it just going to be more multiplayer? And are you guys going to post pics of the event.

Oh yeah, for any gaffers/halo fans in the Los Angeles area, KROQ is giving away passes to play Halo 3 2 months early (according to the promo). I think you need to call during their top 10 countdown at 9pm. Don't know if the promo is still going though as I heard it last Wednesday.

The bottom line is that Bungie had nothing to prove at E3.

They have been giving us information about Halo 3 EVERY WEEK. Most of us didn't expect much to come out of E3 because every week is an E3 presentation for their fans.

Now dont get me wrong peeps me loves the old halo.

But 1player has always been a meh to me, i have always, always thought of halo as mplayer only and one player as an exta sugar topping on a very sweet pie :D

Thats why the beta was soooooo damn nice

You're right, Bungie had nothing to prove.

But Microsoft did. And at an E3 that they treated like a giant infomercial for their 2007 lineup, they failed to showcase the game that will arguably have more of an impact on the console's success than any other.

Everyone knows Halo 3 will be awesome. Some just hoped E3 would do a lot to remind us of why we know that. It didnt. What Bungie showed was impressive, but it wasnt as impressive or as substantial as one would have expected Halo 3's 2007 showing to be.

I was the same exact way until I got into the novels.

Up until last summer I couldn't even tell you Halo: Combat Evolved's plot. But after reading through the novels I started to really become fascinated with the story, and most importantly the secretz

I understand what you're saying. Maybe Microsoft felt that they didn't NEED to push the Bungie boys to come up with anything ridiculous for E3. The marketing extravaganza that is about to ensue will bring more attention than E3 could have anyways. Commercials, WETA shorts, Master Chief Mountain Dew, 7-Eleven contest, etc...

You have a point. Really, E3 as a whole was kind of a bummer, none of the publishers really unloaded with anything special. I think Halo 3 - as one of if not THE biggest game of the year, was thought of as a surefire 'WOW' moment going into the show, but turned out to be simply as impressive as alot of other games. So even though it was impressive, it wasnt the clear standout that everyone thought it would be. I firmly believe it could have been had Bungie shown more or let press get hands on time. Kind of stumble on Microsoft's part since they had their core audience's undivided attention for E3.

I was impressed by what I saw of Halo 3. Ive never been a huge Halo fan. Played the first one with college buddies until the second one came out my junior year, and then I played that one because well...it was pretty much the only game people played on Xbox Live. I enjoyed the beta, but it was pretty much what I expected, so I wasnt blown away. So going into the demo kinda meh towards the franchise, I actually came out of the demo excited about Halo 3.

I got into the plot with Halo 2. The cliffhanger ending gave me blue balls, but the character and plot development up to that point was pretty damn good. It actually made the Covenant kind of interesting, instead of the faceless, colorful mass of targets they were in the original.

I'm going to ignore the annoying people in this thread and the trolling, and instead talk about playing Halo 2 for the first time since the beta ended.

It was fun. Except it looked worse. And played worse. I tried playing some MP (did pretty well), and got really pissed at two people. One was a 12-year-old trying to rap, and another was a guy who kept meleeing me and shooting me. I shot him in the face with mah shotty and felt good, but he finally betrayed me, so I booted him. Later, I attempted to send him a message threatening to put his head in a blender (punctuated by running my blender at the end of the message), but the Xbox-Communicator-whatever-thingy is terrible so it came out all garbled. So now I'm playing one of my favorite campaign levels. And ranting about random stuff on an interweb forum.

How are you guys doing?

I think it would have been cool if Bungie showed more. I wish that more people could be as excited for Halo 3 as the tight Bungie community is.

But I understand why they didn't.

The Beta was a different feeling for me because i was so damn worried about the new things that we were hearing about the game. Equipment scared the hell out of me and my friends and I would have tons of conversations about how this would affect gameplay and if it was good or bad. I remember Frankie's weekly updates and him continuing to say "And it is all still very Halo."

And that is basically what it came down to. They managed to add so much new stuff to this game and still balance it out and incorporated it seamlessly

Going back to halo 2 made me miss the AR from halo 3 sooooooo much :( the uzi just doesnt cut it.

Halo is one of the few games in which I treat the single player and multi-player as equally important. I've played through the first Halo countless times, both through co-op and by myself, and have been hooked on the plot from the start (I bought TFOR as soon as it released). Yet it has also been one of my favorite multi-player experiences ever. Its just one of those things that makes Halo so great for me.

This is true, and it also may have had to do with MS simply wanting to give the spotlight to some third party games since its pretty much a given that Halo will sell well and be good, and by doing what they did they demonstrated that they have much more than just Halo.

:lol

I haven't tried playing H2 online in a while but I still play it frequently splitscreen/LAN with my buddies. I would say the graphics actually hold up pretty well (though not as good as Halo considering how old Halo is). Except whenever I play it I would always be wishing I could do certain things from Halo 3. Like if someone got into a tank or other vehicle, and I saw a plasma pistol laying there, I would always think about picking it up and using it to disable their vehicle.

Same here. I like the SMG, just not as a starting weapon. Trying to shoot someone at medium-range is as much fun as trying to hit someone with marshmallows from 3 blocks away.

i hope ziff isn't going to be the only outlet for campaign footage, because if i have to rely on gamevideos, i may as well just wait for the game to come out. they were first with the mgs4 footage, but i managed to download like three different versions from gamersyde before i got theirs. send some stuff blim's way, pls. he's french or something, so he's totally exempt from your exclusivity agreements

LOL! Ah the magical world of European PR, where NDAs and embargoes have no meaning. If it werent for them and the magic of the internet, we might actually have to wait and pay for content.

Srsly.

I hate Gamevideos. I even had to bold, italicize, and underline that to express my hate.

Cant you DL everything on gamevideos as a high-quality WMV if you dont want to bother waiting for the low-quality stream to load?

I actually kind of had the same problem with the AR in the beta. Its a vast improvement over the SMG as far as a starting weapon, but I still felt like the range was too weak. The damage is perfect IMO and forces players to mix up their shots with grenades and melees, but there's still those frustrating times on Valhalla where you spawn and you're immediately being tagged with BR fire. Bungie seems to know this, hence the fact that you cant walk 10 feet without tripping over a BR.

I just always kept thinking 'if only this thing had a bit more range'. If they added more range but kept the damage the same, it would allow players to defend themselves, but the BR would still have enough of an advantage to ensure it was worth picking up.

That was just my opinion of the weapon. I still loved the hell out of it. AR/BR combo FTW.

What about video? Are we going to see any video, like a video of the E3 behind-closed-doors presentation?

Yes, but I still dislike their website layout, and well everything about it. Also, I don't think they ever have true HD videos in 720p, just slightly larger ones.

And Bungie said every weapon will change if even very slightly from the beta, so hopefully they'll have tweaks like you suggested.

You're not alone. Lots of people think Valhalla should be BR start. Who knows, it might even be when the game ships, they probably just wanted us to use the hell out of the AR in the Beta to see what we thought, or because it was a new weapon.

my big problem with gamevideos is that i can't start downloads. or they'll start and then act as if they've finished when i've got maybe a hundred kilobytes of garbage data. that site just never works smoothly for me.

but i don't mean to derail the HALO IS DOOMED talk with all this GAMEVIDEOS IS DOOMED talk

I agree with the GV nitpicking. My biggest complaint is the occasional lack of HD footage. You can bet that if Gamespot or IGN had the exclusive, there wouldn't be 1 second of video of Halo 3 that wasn't optionally available in HD.

Man, people sure seemed to have insano expecations for E3 in a year where E3 was supposed to be cancelled, replaced by separate platform specific events, and then revived as a smaller press only event occuring later in the year (but still too early for the traditional holiday ramp-ups.)

Maybe publishers will be more concerned with "winning E3" next year and you'll see more megatons. Or maybe E3 will become even less relevant next year as the separate events mature.

In either case, big, custom E3 demos tend to be incompatible with an end run crunch a couple of months before release. Our "big show" effort this year was the beta, and IMO, that was a hundred thousand times better use of time.

Heh, I saw you online a couple of hours ago. I was going to send you an invite, but you were in a game, and I decided not to/was too impatient to wait for the game to finish. But yeah, I still play Halo 2 every once in a while, if nothing but to play with friends who still only have the original XBOX. And, while it's NOTHING compared to what I've played of Halo 3, I still enjoy it. The Beta really spoiled me. :(

If it could only be one or the other, then I agree completely.

That said, it seems odd that they would be mutually exclusive when all the resources needed for a more impressive showing were present at E3. MS had a section of the hotel for Halo 3 demonstrations, the full level was apparently complete (sans the final level of polish) from what I was told, and it was demonstrated in a completely playable capacity. So it seems as if Bungie and MS were able to get impressive code ready for E3 in addition to putting out the beta, they just chose to show relatively little.

What kept Bungie and MS from showing more levels or giving more than a select few members of the press hands-on?
