Was there any backlash on HaloGAF when H2 (before modders took over matchmaking) came out? Just curious...

Don't bother looking that far back.

Look at famous Halo 3 OT. Or Reach OT 1.

Compare them to Halo 4's beginning.

For the record I have no idea what the start of these threads looked like (I came to HaloGAF in Reach OT3) but from what I remember in the Reach threads, and my lurking in the halo 3 threads back in the day, game wasn't shit on as bad as this. But in all honesty, looking at just the two products, both Reach and Halo 3 are much more complete, polished products. I don't think there's any grounds to dispute that otherwise.

Another interesting thing, what did Halo 4 FIX from Reach.
-Nerfed Jetpack, but its still a jetpack
-Camo radar effect nerfed, actual camo buffed, not sure which one is better honestly.
- Removed Armor Lock, but replaced with something that can be super annoying as well
-Removed Bloom (thank you thank you thank you) but it stayed on the pistol (RIP)
-Got rid of the shitty grain filter
-Movement is better, or at least it feels better to me

That's about it. Then it went on to introduce more problems, and bigger problems.

I need to play with the old crew again (rip squad slayer crew). my shit should be back to normal tomorrow. I wanna game all weekend.

So pack it up, Halo 3 was perfection.

Sorry, I know we keep going in circles here but that video sounds like a 'get off my lawn' video. Yes, you can make changes to a game and it no longer plays exactly as it had before, but there has to be more to the argument than that.

His argument: Sprint allows you to recover from positional mistakes. You couldn't do that in Halo 3 and I don't think thats good for competitive play. Also, jetpacks and other abilities suck.

The entirety of that argument is that its 'not the same', without stopping to consider any new elements of teamwork and positional play introduced by those changes.

I love all the sales genies in here predicting next gen and COD beating Halo and how to save Halo.

Who knows what the next big thing is? COD is legendary now because it owned this generation of shooters, just like Halo did the one prior. Gaming trends and taste will change, it's just the nature of things.

Halo lost its soul when the developers got bored with the formula. COD might be the other way around, where gamers get bored at the quick fix coccaine addiction like gameplay. Only so long you can trap lightning in a bottle.

I always thought there was room for both franchises to exist. I wish Halo stayed truer to what made it Halo in the first place and I think now that we have this new iteration it's becoming easier to see what elements are key to that feeling. And it definitely started with Reach.

I have no idea what the proper nickname is but Alien posting boob gifs for a page lol.

Ah, thanks. I did see the page of boob posts, briefly; kids were in the room. I bailed for a few days hoping it would blow over. :lol

FWIW, I don't mind sprint. I'm pretty neutral about it, really, at least in multiplayer. I like it a lot in Campaign/Firefight. I find jet pack so much more problematic, for reasons that are now beaten to death.

I think the obvious move is the next developer that comes along and takes a new franchise the route of the original Halo experience. There is definitely a forumla in there that works for gamers and I'm sure someone out there is capable of producing it. Perhaps that's what is really needed. Not this rehashing of the IP, but let the developers get their creative kicks in with creating a new world around the established formula.

Regarding the sprint lockout H2 video... dude is mentioning the direction Halo 5 might take.

Reach added Armor Abilities, forever challenging the core aspect of equal starts. People started calling Bungie out on CoDifying, but it was still tame.

Halo 4 kept Armor Abilities, not big surprise. But added the aspect of custom classes and PERKS. There is no sugar coating this one, they added PERKS and renamed them. Based on what I'm feeling from 343 so far.... I think this will continue.

I think if Aim Down Sights is ever added to Halo it will be purely aesthetic. You're not gonna have your aiming slowed down. Not sure if they'll give the option to things like the AR.... but as far as the current scoped weapons... wouldn't surprise me if it looked more like looking through a scope (canon nerds prepare)

But, I think a logical CoDification Halo might take is weapon attachments. It would not surprise me ONE BIT if Halo 5 had this. I think something along the lines of Kill Streaks isn't too far fetched either given the current Ordnance system. Hell, they might listen to us and put weapons back on the map, might even make them static this time, and instead personal ordnance will take the form of killstreaks.

that would be terrible if they added attachments and ads. Frankie practically said they wouldn't do that. by the time Halo 5 is out i don't think cod will be as popular so they will do their own thing hopefully.

From what I remember, the in-game player count was around 1mil (could have been the servers exploding though...)

Another point.

Halo was king last gen.
CoD changed it up and was king this gen.
Will CoD keep its throne in the FPS world? Will Halo reclaim the throne? Or will a new game become king?

Yup

well cod was around before cod 4 remember. it took cod 4 to raise it to king status. halo can do the same.

I don't see why the don't just make an infantry set halo game and do all this shit. They own the franchise. IF that's what sells then fine do it, use the IP just call it something a little different and dont push all of it into what makes the main halo great. Was kind of what I was hoping for with ODST. Take the IP somewhere else entirely.

Why not just have both fucking games? I'm sure they can work the name halo in the title somewhere.
Go fucking nuts with it, have two entirely different interweaving storylines even. That'd be pretty awesome. Now they can release their 'HALO' game every two years like they always wanted anyway.

Both of these were lateral moves at best.

Camo radar effect wasn't really nerfed, as the camo user now has perfect awareness of approaching enemies' locations where their own radar would have been jammed in Reach. The approaching enemies still have to guess where the camo user is, which I guess is slightly easier now, but grenade flushing is harder with 4's reduced radius. If anything, camo campers are at a more advantageous position in terms of awareness in Halo 4.

Hardlight Shield/AL is a harder comparison, but still a lateral move. Being susceptible to grenades is nice, but being nice and mobile to extend that pause button by moving behind cover while invulnerable isn't. I dunno. Neither ability set seems all that well thought out.

They had the chance to do whatever they wanted without the Chief and instead they just gave everyone a rehashed setpiece Firefight.

But if we're pitching crazy ideas, Deadspace + ODST.

Weapon attachments wouldn't surprise me in the slightest, in fact, I'd almost be more surprised if Halo 5 didn't have something like that.

What makes me scratch my head the most about these two in particular is that the game already answered both of these in terms of balance since the covenant have always used both of these things in campaign.

Camo is worn by elite zealots who have weaker shields and use only melee weapons.

Hardlight shield seems like an elaboration of a Jackal shield which can only fully protect a Jackal when immobile, and even then a good shot can force the wearer to recoil. The shield also provides some limited protection on the move, but can also be taken out entirely by a plasma pistol overcharge.

I just find it funny that the rules behind these things change so dramatically for multiplayer. They are both staples in the enemy's sandbox and in the fiction, so it seemed like only a matter of time to see them all work there way into the player's hands. Which also happens to be why I had wanted jetpacks, and love them to this day.

Weapon attachments wouldn't surprise me in the slightest, in fact, I'd almost be more surprised if Halo 5 didn't have something like that.
Yep, wouldn't put it past them. The cardinal rule they broke, which seemed to lead to all of the other problems, was in adding a progression system that unlocks game changing rewards. That right there is the rub, above all else.

I'm not talking about campaign at all. I'm focused solely on MP.
They can take the COD formula and HALO it, and no one is going to be upset if they can still get their core halo experience from the other (Supported and current) Halo game. I've got nothing against the Modern Warfare gamer and I totally understand why they like that game, but my gaming tastes aren't being fufilled at all right now. There is too much junk in the way of the experience I've wanted since 3.

Holy shit 594,000 people playing BLOPs 2 MP and 190,000 in Zombies. What's Halo 4 looking like post Christmas?
Can we shuttup about Blops already? God, people like you keep fucking reminding us about this shit. If you want to play Black Ops II go play Black Ops II. Thankskbye.

The threads always fizzled down, announcements, pre release-hype and release hype always drew huge numbers. After that a lot of people just moved on, a core people stayed around and discussed much the game. Aka, every game on GAF.

I submitted that post to Merriam-Webstern for inclusion as an example for the definition of "hypocritical".

Kyle was saying he didn't see anything wrong with posting boob gifs under the justification that people look at porn anyway, so why not post some NSFW content in this thread because he's done talking about Halo.

I simply said Kyle doesn't get to say what can and cannot be posted, and with the removal of the gifs, seems the mods agree.

You might need to spend extra time with Merriam-Webstern learning a few extra words.

I'd liked to drop it now, please refrain from calling me out.

They haven't gotten back to me about my entry for Kyle under "waste of air", so we're even :)

Dual wielding was just a bad idea for Halo. I love the SMG but when every game became a "get another weapon because you're stupid if you don't dual or get a rifle" it sucked a lot of the fun out of playing. In Halo 3 it was largely irrelevant, so it was only logical to cut it in Reach and continue that in 4, especially considering the ARs became more effective.

shit = Blops II created a rich suite of features and now has 3-4x the population Halo does, because Halo didn't add any new features, removed some, still has terrible playlist management, glitches everywhere, and performs technically under par.

Seriously though guys, stop reminding him of that!

How dare we compare one console FPS to another console FPS. Shame on you.

And old school Halo would do so? This is where we disagree.

The genre, and Halo has to move forward. And no I don't think Halo 4 does that. Halo 4 is a Halo/COD hybrid, where some of the changes worked much better than others.

Basically I'd like to see Halo's principles expanded upon, but not by going back to Halo 2, and not by trying to have a shooter-baby with Call of Duty.

Not to mention, CoD is what Halo 4 was chasing in so many ways. It invites the comparison by existing.

I'm crazy jealous of the Blops II feature set. It's the direction I was hoping things like Theater moved in. Rather than, you know, deletion.

Sigh..... the matchmaking in this game is just... so, so, sooooooooooooo bad. Being the only person on a team of 5 or 6 with a positive K/D against a party of people with 2.0 K/Ds makes no sense.

I mean, I play for as long as I can stand it, watching my teammates vomit all over themselves. Until I finally say 'fuck it', equip the cloak, find a hiding spot, and simply fill a spot on the roster that would otherwise be filled were I to quit, so that I can handicap my already handicapped team to the tipping point. Watching the idiots get mowed down 5 on 4 or 6 on 5 is a fleeting cathartic bliss, but it would be nice if it wasn't a necessary tangential source of entertainment.

How has 343i managed to shit all over what was once a functional, satisfying matchmaking system?

Like I don't know that and I never ever will downplay their wonderful set of features that I wish Halo had from the get-go. I just find it hypocritical for people that said “I am done with the franchise” to just popup consistently just to throw shade with Blops II features. It’s not like we don’t know that Blops II has amazing features, thanks.

Me too. GF bought her for me. Chocolate lab.. 6 weeks.

That's awesome. Mine is sleeping A LOT, he'll play for a good hour or so and then just knock out for a couple hours lol. Its understandable I guess since he's still a pup. You having the same experience?

So a friend is on level 60 something now, could only choose between the 2 least useful perks and is not far from 70.

When are the decent perks going to be unlocked for people outside of America?

I suppose the vehicle one would be better, but I dont think I have ever seen him play BTB or anything of that sort anyway.
