Halo Wars 2 Beta Live on PC (12GB) [Up: And Xbox One]

This was close to a must buy for me until I heard there was no base building. That's my favorite part of RTS games. :(

Maybe when it's on sale sometime down the road.

Base building isnt in Blitz mode, but the regular RTS modes have it.

Ah, really? I was reading something yesterday about how there was something to do with cards and base building was removed. I'll definitely have to check this out then.

Yup cards are only in one mode. Shame some people are writing this off because of it. Is it new in an RTS to have a different game mode l Iike this?

Misinformation is real around this game. It's one only one mode that consists of Hyper RTS without building revolving around cards.

Can't really blame people too much either but a google search would show proper stuff.

please add unit limit

i just played against a full army of locusts (they were 15-20), and yesterday enemy spawned 5 honor guards

Well I guess I'll download the beta tonight and play this friday/weekend. Not looking forward to this mode but we'll see if it can change my tune. Is the UI smoother than the last beta?

The CD Key thats included in the physical version is basically the same Halo Wars 2 digital code that Amazon and CD Keys sell digitally sperately if that makes sense.

You just have to redeem the CD key like you do Xbox Live codes and you'll get access to both PC and XB1 digital copies of Halo Wars 2.

Thats what I'm hoping, but this makes it sound like the key only works for PC and you can link it to xbox from there. @THQNordic's Tweet: https://twitter.com/THQNordic/status/823827547012075521?s=09

Doesn't help that the OP doesn't mention this either. Looking at the title and the post, it seems like it's a beta of the proper game.

Well that's a marketing problem they might face.

It's still a weird selection even if they want data etc on the mode. I'd include a small base section as well for good measure but that's just me 🙂

So do we have any place with some strategies? Perhaps for each leader? Would be nice to read through and learn about different deck builds and stuff.

Artillery in this game is pretty busted. If the enemy team places them in particular on the hill next to B on the beta map, it is deadly. I hope at least the damage output of them is nerfed.

Just started playing with my friend last night. Artillery on the hill by B is wicked deadly. We lost the game because we didn't take it out right away.

Waypoint have had some lists for each ability so there might be some leader ones there as well by now.

You can tell so many of these players haven't played an RTS before. Almost every team I've faced in my four hours of playtime has used the completely ineffective strategy of moving all of their units to a single capture point which usually ends up with them getting slaughtered and losing all of their units within seconds. Hopefully people have figured it out by launch because this doesn't exactly make for a fun fight.

Other than that, I like everything besides Blitz itself. I'm not a big fan of the card gameplay, it's far too random for an RTS that's built around strategically building your units up. Plus, base building is a must in an RTS and this mode eschewed it to focus on constant action and five minute matches.

I'm pretty sure I'm still in for launch, but I'll probably avoid Blitz mode all together.

This game won't run on a Surface Book. Pretty lame.

One of the biggest tragedies of MS' current strategy is that they aren't taking advantage of their unified platform. Every single PC that is sold in the MS Store should be capable of running UWP games in some capacity, and every UWP game should be optimized to run on min spec GPUs. At the very least, they should run on the Surfaces.

I agree. It would help adding to the OP that Blitz is just one mode but there are other ways to play the game, including skirmish and firefight.

Server downtime last night doesn't seem to have changed anything, not that they said it would. So I guess this 10/11 day beta is just going to be 1 mode 1 map. Actually checked some of the older footage of Blitz and it was all on the same map too... there are actually going to be multiple maps for this thing in the full game right? Would have liked to try another if so.

Oh well, I ended up enjoying the mode more than I expected and and also like what I've seen for the range of units/unit abilities/leader powers/etc. that will apply to the rest of the game. There is a lot more micro opportunity than HW1 had. Looking good to me.

Surprisingly it seems like this is the only blitz map, which seems a bit underwhelming. Is it that hard to create balanced maps for this mode? I'm sure this is probably where they'll add DLC maps.
These epic battles will all take place on the tactically balanced map, Providing Grounds.

“What we wanted to do is make this a non-intimidating mode. It was important that if a player wanted just one deck to pick their favorite units, that should be a viable strategy,” explains Oli Smith, Project Lead on Blitz at Creative Assembly. “We didn’t want to start where, ‘For this map I’ll need this deck, and for this mode I’ll have to have this one.’ A lot of the depth comes into the deck building, so we didn’t want to overwhelm people by having too many other variables.”

Surprisingly, but it also falls in like with this quote. Really poor choice. I don't think this will help the game mode's population in the long run.

Here's my post from earlier on what i've learned so far.

I've gotten really good at blitz now Won like 6 in a row
Energy> points at all cost.

Have at least 1 scout unit in your deck for the explicit purpose of getting and stealing energy.

I make my armies to be able to protect themselves meaning that I'll exclude air and fill my ranks with {hunters, medium vehicles, scouts, a few anti Infantry, and a Locus for kiting} then 1 or 2 Hero abilities as needed for army wipes or saves.

Powers like Teleport in combat are really powerful as it seems like you have a good second of no damage plus a good way to sandwich enemies for wipes.

I normally put 1 stationary card in my deck as well {artillery, Spike turrents, or Radio towers}

10 point cards feel useless almost and I'd replace them with the 50 point version As soon as you get them.

Don' t let your force get wiped because you'll be really far behind, If your losing fall back and try again don't just commit to the L. You can always go back home heal and attack another base.

Man what a stupid mode they choose to show off in public beta. I lost my interest already after 3rd match. Will try if demo releases somehow or normal mode beta

I'm liking it so far, I do hope I get my code for the Halo Wars DE soon so I can play through it again (never finished it) but I hope the UI is overhauled in that though

I've enjoyed the Blitz beta a lot and missed out on the first beta earlier in the year but it doesn't seem like the game is gonna be much of sales hit. The first game sold fairly well on xbox 360 but that was during a time where the Halo brand was at an all-time high. With the news that the final game may only have one blitz map, it looks less enticing to the casual crowd. I'd be surprised if it even sold 100k on it's own. Bundling it with the xbox one may help inflate the sales but overall I can't imagine the population being too healthy.

Huh? I very much doubt that. Blitz can easy be played on every MP map.

So I'm downloading a 25.83GB update on PC. Is this the final release preload?

Also, it's stuck at 1.02GB and is thrashing my hard drive, hard.

Well, blitz is not for me. At all. Still looking forward to the full release, but this was as dull as feared
