Halo Wars images

Story driven RTS = The shit.

World in Conflict was like that, and it rocked, and it looks like this is a pretty major production on that front too.

I'm a huge Halo fan, but I think I'm going to end up passing on Halo Wars. That could change between now and February, but I just can't get hyped for the game.

Oh this is the $80 Halo 3 map pack. Game looks OK I guess I hope there's a separate code to download the maps so I can sell this on eBay.

I don't want to upset anybody so I'll put it in a spoiler.

read at your own risk.

this CG shot looks like it could almost be done on the KZ2 engine. sorry :(

What the hell are you rambling about?
They are pissed about a set of Halo 3 maps that will initially be released in a bundle with the Halo Wars CE.

Yeah, the special edition to this looks great. I may get it if the game itself is good.
What are the full contents?

the first screen looks meh, but the cutscenes look neat

Wait, what? What then? Ressources gathered by time?

The move away from any significant resource management may irk some RTS diehards, but it feels right for this game, which is potentially the most action-heavy strategy title we've encountered.

Does anyone else want a CG Halo film? The people behind these cutscenes are doing a damn good job IMO.

Personally, I was one of the folk who was hoping the Peter Jackson movie would be 100% CG.

I watched the first Halo Wars trailer, I wanted to see more, I could have EASILY sat and watched that stretched out to 2 hours.

They'll be up on live in about a month after release anyway. Whats he bitching about?

I saw this about the CE: Unique In-game Vehicle - "Honor Guard" Wraith

What the fuck is with this pre-order unit crap that is coming into console RTS's?

They are bitching because they need to bitch about something. Also, the vehicle is just a pallete swap of a vehicle that will be available to all players, so there is no unfairness. It is just that this vehicle is some sort of legendary vehicle in the halo universe. And you will be able to build it for your army if you want. I don't know how it will be handled, but it will just look different, not act different.

I want someone to explain to me how this game didn't make it, yet you're enthused that Halo wars is going to bust the doors open for RTS on consoles.

I just don't see it happening with Starcraft 2 coming around the block.

Being a die hard halo fan, I would need to try this out before I get it, I can't just pick it up because it is halo (but is does have a story to it), from the previews I've read, everyone says it plays fine and you can master the controls pretty quickly.

Link is broken, which game were you talking about? Also, Halo Wars is selling mainly on the IP. I don't think anybody expects it to be a masterpiece for it to be sucessful. About "opening the gates for RTS games on consoles". Well, I think Microsoft is looking after the Halo IP and not the genre. Lastly, Starcraft 2 is in a different league, and a different platform. They are not mutually exclusive.

And the trolls have arrived.

It's not trolling to point out that COH from two years ago has similar graphics. It's fact.

Xbox 360 isn't futureproof. At some point in the future criticism of visuals will be warranted. You wouldn't call the original Xbox's visuals amazing anymore, would you?

I'm sure the gameplay will be top notch and this game looks awesome.

But don't act like 360 will be amazing forever. Because it won't.

It's scale is nowhere near as big. I play CoH too. It is a different scale. Halo Wars' scale is more similar to Red Alert's 3, and the graphical differences are not that much. Or better say what you would expect between a console and a PC game.

That's just plain wrong. Command & Conquer 3 makes these screenshots look like a joke. I won't even mention Supreme Commander, even though you played the scale card.

Seriously, these graphics - especially the toy plastic units - are not impressive. at all.

It was more aimed at the Killzone 2 baiters.

who brought a game that has nothing to do with RTS into the thread.

Why are people talking about a shooter, Killzone 2, in a Halo Wars thread?

Halo Wars is a RTS.

facepalm to the max

I was at an event in London last week to try it out and I actually came away somewhat convinced.

We got to play the three first campaign missions and a little skirmish as both the UNSC and The Covenant. I wasn't too convinced by the campaign, maybe because it was the first missions and set to a somewhat easy difficulty, så hopefully it becomes more interesting further in.

Skirmish had me sold though. Compared to something like Red Alert 3 as a console RTS, Halo Wars offer far fewer options, which find I good choice to make it more suitable for the console. The controls are very nice and quickly learned, the units have the right feeling and the two factions seem very equal on the surface, but once you dig down into the game, you learn that they are in fact very different.

Graphically the game doesn't seem be all that, although this could be caused by the TV's we played on, where the cinematics also looked a bit rough. From a distance, it looked really beautiful though.

The main problems as I experienced it was unit movement (they could often get stuck or move around in a weird way) and the form of the campaign missions (which were very generic, but might just be the first couple of missions). It's not going to be a RTS revolution, but it does seem like Ensemble has found somewhat the right formular for a RTS game on a console, done in a more traditional way (unlike EndWar).

I think there are both strengths and weaknesses to the game's visuals.

But it really pisses me off when there's elaborate CG cut scenes that are way prettier than the game's actual engine. You know they could have spent less money on the CG and made the actual GAME better

Are you people for real? I mean, seriously, do you work or are you still in kindergarden??? Yea... more money equals better game. We have seen this many times in the past.

NOT!

is it just me, or does this look really quite bad?

guess the last couple of shots explain where the budget went.
It's called an RTS. Look closely at Demigod screens, the textures aren't amazing for that either. It looks good as a whole and when things are in motion, that's what matters. It'd be crazy to have tons of high res units all over the screen. The game would lag.

More money and resources certainly does help. Money doesn't instantly = a better game... But it's clear that if CG is expensive, then maybe some of the funds were better off being used to pay gameplay, art, and other designers which will probably make it a better game.

I mean.. Who cares about cutscenes that much in an RTS? It's all about the gameplay baby!

I'm not stating that more money = better game.

I'm stating that less money, time, and effort spent on the CG cut scenes could be more money, time, and effort placed on the gameplay itself.

There is a difference. It's all about how you want to utilize scarce resources. Every dev and publisher are different though.

Stop trying to make it sound like I'm saying more money always equals a better game.

I'm trying to say that more resources spent on polishing game play in relation to cutscenes may provide a better gameplay experience.

May. Not always.

That's just what my "kindergarden" teachers tell me, though. :D

The cutscenes were probably outsourced to a specialized company. Don't know if Ensemble has their own CG department.

RA3 doesn't look that much better. Actually the 360 version looks inferior to Halo Wars. I don't have the 360 version but I have played it, I own the PC version though. Also, Supreme Commander has an awesome scale but the design is rather bland. I own the game, and a lot of the terrain is lame looking. The units are very derivative too. Also, I I am playing all games at maximun settings. You really can't tell me Halo Wars is looking bad for an RTS, at least not from those screens. If the end product is a jaggy mess then I will understand, but so far there is no indication of that. I am more concerned about the framerate tbh.

I'm running RA3 on my PC with the settings way up and it doesn't look as good as Halo Wars. It's stylised more.

Red Alert 3 and Starcraft 2 actually looks quite good.

I have a feeling it's going to be pretty bland. It would have been a much better game if Bungie had developed it and emulated their Myth style of game-play.

That looks good but the difference isnt as big as lest say the difference between Halo 3 and Crysis. The difference is less than what you would expect between a console exclusive and a pc exclusive game.

Most Blizzard games run on high on a medium built computer.
