Happy 1st Birthday, Wii U!

I think the bad press and defeatist situation created by the gaming media were key reasons for WiiU's slow first year rather than the lack of games. Of course Nintendo does hold responsibility for the situation, like delaying games and leaving huge holes on their schedule and awful advertising, but the negativity toward it was way over-the-top and mostly created by Nintendo detractors.

The games media and forums like NeoGAF may be influencers, but they're not going to change the course of the larger market, certainly not the one Nintendo was hoping to get when they launched with NSMBU and Nintendo Land.

Software sells hardware. It has always worked this way. The console sold a bit at launch based off the two or three exclusives and then stopped selling when there weren't games anymore. Following up with a poor mini-Game and Wario collection isn't going to drive people.

The negativity didn't spring out of nowhere. It came from the lack of games.

Just picked up the black 32gb model on Craigslist for $300 with NSMBU and The Last Story Wii (sealed w/ artbook), a couple of Wiimotes and a classic controller, and 2 years left on the extended warranty the guy had bought.

Updating now :)

What's the consensus on The Last Story? Was thinking I might sell it to offset the cost of the Wii U (and I know I want to get Xenoblade eventually). Also gonna sell the controllers since I have a Wii and controllers already, so I think I got a pretty good deal! :)

Can't wait to pick up W101, Wind Waker HD, Pikmin 3 and Super Mario 3D World!

Did I miss out on the Target b2g1 deal?

THe b2g1 deal ended on the 16th I believe. Used that day to pick up TW101 and Pikmin 3 (Killzone SF the third). Sort of wish it was this week instead due to SM3DW, but now I have something for people to pick up for me this holiday if they ask.

Sorry to say I have no idea about The Last Story.

The Wii U is pretty awesome, definitely the system I had the most fun with this year. A few remarks:

  • Game & Wario is a fantastic piece of software that does not get nearly as much attention as it deserves. It should have come preinstalled in all Wii U's instead of bundling Nintendo Land.
  • New Super Luigi U is the greatest 2D Mario game to date.
  • Nintendo Land is also a beautiful game that does not get enough praise.
  • The Pro Controller is my favorite video game controller.
  • The Wonderful 101 is everything great about video games in one package. I wish Kamiya and his team could have worked on a single player campaign for Super Smash Brothers.
If the quality of stuff coming out on the Wii U continues like this next year then I will be very happy.

I leave all of you who worry about sales numbers with this quote from Platinum:

Buy the game and worry about the sales never. The fun you have will stay the same.

I get wanting to root for a winner, but the minute that crazy sales makes a game more fun is the minute that it becomes something worth worrying about as a gamer.

Well, I'm a moron. I have had my Wii U an entire year to this day and I'm only just now realizing that it came with the charging cradle for the gamepad, and not just a stand for it. I just went out to the garage and sure enough there it was. My God.

What is the latest word on the new battery for it? I know that most say the Nyko replacement was crap. Anything out here in the states that works for it?

Are you serious?

Quotes like the above and people saying the Wii Us first year was fantastic are kidding themselves. This time last year no one was saying the Wii U would be dead within a year. That's just as unbalanced as saying the console has no games.

The truth is, a year ago people were way more positive about the system in general. The future looked bright. Before launch, people were expecting the Wii U would have the best version of all multiplatform titles for 2013. Publishers hadn't pulled the rug out from under it, games like Pikmin 3 and an exclusive Rayman were "launch window" titles and initial sales were very good. People were anticipating games like Tomb Raider, Aliens and Crysis before they vanished (or weren't officially announced). After launch, people were waiting for Nintendo to capitalize on the unique features of the Gamepad. Nintendo Land showed promise, but a year later we are still waiting for a game to truly show what the gamepad is all about. A lot of people have now taken the "lot's of little things, no one big thing" outlook on the pad, which is fine, but before launch people were wanting a "wow!" Wii Sports type moment. Then there are the terrible sales, the drought during the first half of 2013...

Yes, after a year the Wii U has a nice stable of high quality exclusive titles. There's plenty to play on the system, and 2014 is looking good. But to say the system has had a "fantastic" first year is to ignore the serious issue the Wii U has had. It might be meeting peoples expectations now... but that's only because many have tempered their expectations.

The first year has absolutely been amazing. Right up there with the best of them. I really don't know what you are smoking unless it is the GAF pipe or the sale-age pipe.

Non-stop releases for the diehard Nintendo fan. A new Mario from the 3D Land folks at the one-year anniversary is just icing on the cake.

And I have not even gotten 101...simply because I don't care for beat-em-ups. But that is just one more title.

Non-stop releases for the diehard Nintendo fan.

This is just in total defiance of reality. Non-stop? Not even Nintendo would say their release schedule has been non-stop. There were huge gaps between releases.

Here's Nintendo's published games:

Nintendo Land
NSMB 4
NSMB 4.5
Lego City Undercover
SiNG Party
Game and Wario
Windwaker remake
Wonderful 101
Pikmin 3
Wii Party U
Wii Fit U
2/5th of Wii Sports remake

You really think that's a "non-stop" release schedule for "the diehard Nintendo fan"? Really?

The Wii U and I share a birthday.

A handful, just like the Wii U. GAFs selective memory tends to ignore that fact though. Chances are PS4 and XBone will have same problem too, but it will be rationalized in some rediculous way to justify the overblown hype people have for these systems.
Exactly
I await this time next year when ps4 turns a year old and people try to rationalize the mediocre year

Indeed.

They usually release one big game a month. That is the definition of non-stop for Nintendo.

Throw in some of there download games of bigger sizes...things like Pokemon rumble and then throw in a couple of fun VC games like Mother and it has been fantastic. There pace of releases has been equal to the stellar lineup of the Wii.

I really can't wait to buy the damn console when I get a second job. My part-job can not fund a new console at the moment. Heck, its not enough to actually fund any news games for my current consoles so...

I have a Wii U. I have only truly enjoyed 1 game on Wii U, and that is debatable. I am looking forward to a couple more games on the Wii U. Overall, I wish I didn't have a Wii U.

Which game? You must be very selective, because I've enjoyed several games for the Wii U. Hope you enjoy it more next year.

I can't believe it's already been a year since the console was released. Time is flying.

I got one at launch and I've had fun with it. SM3D World looks great. I'm hoping Super Smash Bros. comes out in 2014.
It probably won't.

I really do hope I enjoy the system in the long run so I'm trying to keep my expectations extremely low. The game I enjoyed was Pikmin 3 but I keep on going back in forth in my head if it was a step up or down from Pikmin 2. Wind Waker was a neat novelty for a week, I don't really count that as a proper Wii U game, and demos I've tried of games like Wonderful 101 made me not want to play those. I am getting Super Mario World 3D so I hope that is as good or better than the 3DS game. The only game I'm looking forward to next year is Smash but I was so disappointed in the long run by Brawl that I, again, am keeping my expectations extremely low.

I thought I was going to have my daughters for Mario launch day, but as it turns out I'm not :( I'm gonna be all by my lonesome with a hot new Mario game and seasonal brews :(

These are the stages of acceptance!

I'm totally stoked to play it with them when I can but I'm going to enjoy breaking it in alone, too!

Happy birthday, Wii U. I know 2014 is going to be filled with some awesome shit.

This... simply isn't true. It's been true for a few months, but for the first half of the year there weren't "non-stop releases". Have a look at Wii U game releases in January and February of this year and try to claim with a straight face the releases were "non-stop".

All I'm saying is, a balanced appraisal of the systems first year would take into account the issues as well as the great games. That, and ignoring the other points I made, makes me think that perhaps you are the one smoking Nintendos pipe?

Paid 179 Euro for my system during the summer when the Wii U was not selling at all in europe and most big box retails were dropping it like a fly.

I'm really happy with my system! :D
As long as nintendo does not have a account system I'll not buy anything digital sadly and the system needs to be faster and more connected.
But overall I'm very happy with it.

Playing Zelda WW HD right now and on the 29th Mario comes out and will be playing that for while.

I'm hoping to jump on the WiiU bandwagon this Christmas. It certainly has more next-gen appeal to me than the other two. It has several games I can play with my 3 yr old kid and that is worth 20xKZ +50xHalos... :D

Happy birthday :)

I remember the project cafe hype like it was yesterday.
Nintendo had a 1 year lead on the next gen consoles.

It's mind boggling how bad they fucked up. From the messaging, the name, the software, the underpowered hardware, the price, the OS, the account system.

One year later and things arent any better. probably even worse now. Stuck between the huge, cheap libraries of the PS360 and behemoths that are the PS4/xbone.

I only ever got Zombi U (meh) and Pikmin 3 (pretty fun), honestly nothing else really grabbed my attention. Looking forward to Mario Kart 8, Bayonetta 2, and X... guess there will be another inch of dust on the device before we are there.

Biggest console disappointment ever, and I have a Vita.

All of us new owners bought the same games! Pikmin 3 is too addictive!

Why is this topic always about sales?
Is this a U.S. thing? Serious question. I just bought my Wii U and every thread I read here seems to be about sales and figures.

I mean, here in Asia (Philippines, SG and HK), I've never had a conversation of sales figures come up ever with fellow gamers.

Nintendo does have an account system. All your digital purchases are linked to your NNID. How to people still pretend this is not the case.

What about Toki Tori 2+ or Wonderful 101? If you're waiting for Bayonetta 2, Wonderful 101 it's of the same genre and absolutely awesome, at the same level of quality than the first Bayonetta but with much more content and variety.

It is not solely linked to your NNID. It is also linked to your hardware, so it may as well not be linked to any NNID. A pure account system would allow us to log our NNID into any system and play our games. The DRM in this case would be the NNID and the games would only run under that account name.

Even if we could somehow change our "primary system", so replacing broken hardware or buying/selling used systems would be more viable. As it is now, you basically have to call and hope for the best.

The key thing is that your purchases are linked to your account which means it is known to them and can easily be replaced. People like to act like they have 10 different consoles they constantly switch between and break their system every week.

I'm on the bench for Wonderful 101 as it seems more like a game to play in short bursts, and it looks like I'd grow tired of it rather quickly.

Toki Tori 2 is just not for me from what I've seen, absolutely not the style or genre I'd normally play. But thanks for the suggestions!

Re: TT2 - Do you like Super Metroid? Do you like Fez?

I don't think it's possible to "grow tired" of TW101 when it constantly throw completely new stuff at you that is absolutely mind bending and insane.

Got TW101 today, planning also to get Zombi U & Pikmin 3 along with a Mario & Luigi Premium Pack in Friday and of course I have Super Mario 3D Land pre-ordered...this is gonna be an awesome Christmas. :)
