I think the bad press and defeatist situation created by the gaming media were key reasons for WiiU's slow first year rather than the lack of games. Of course Nintendo does hold responsibility for the situation, like delaying games and leaving huge holes on their schedule and awful advertising, but the negativity toward it was way over-the-top and mostly created by Nintendo detractors.
It had a terrible first half of the year and a fantastic second half. Unless you count sales of course.
Just picked up the black 32gb model on Craigslist for $300 with NSMBU and The Last Story Wii (sealed w/ artbook), a couple of Wiimotes and a classic controller, and 2 years left on the extended warranty the guy had bought.
Updating now
What's the consensus on The Last Story? Was thinking I might sell it to offset the cost of the Wii U (and I know I want to get Xenoblade eventually). Also gonna sell the controllers since I have a Wii and controllers already, so I think I got a pretty good deal!
Can't wait to pick up W101, Wind Waker HD, Pikmin 3 and Super Mario 3D World!
Did I miss out on the Target b2g1 deal?
Nah. I like the Wii U, though, but DC was GOAT.
Wii U has given me Wonderful 101. This by itself justified my hardware purchase.
Bravo.
Buy the game and worry about the sales never. The fun you have will stay the same.
I get wanting to root for a winner, but the minute that crazy sales makes a game more fun is the minute that it becomes something worth worrying about as a gamer.
Are you serious?
Quotes like the above and people saying the Wii Us first year was fantastic are kidding themselves. This time last year no one was saying the Wii U would be dead within a year. That's just as unbalanced as saying the console has no games.
The truth is, a year ago people were way more positive about the system in general. The future looked bright. Before launch, people were expecting the Wii U would have the best version of all multiplatform titles for 2013. Publishers hadn't pulled the rug out from under it, games like Pikmin 3 and an exclusive Rayman were "launch window" titles and initial sales were very good. People were anticipating games like Tomb Raider, Aliens and Crysis before they vanished (or weren't officially announced). After launch, people were waiting for Nintendo to capitalize on the unique features of the Gamepad. Nintendo Land showed promise, but a year later we are still waiting for a game to truly show what the gamepad is all about. A lot of people have now taken the "lot's of little things, no one big thing" outlook on the pad, which is fine, but before launch people were wanting a "wow!" Wii Sports type moment. Then there are the terrible sales, the drought during the first half of 2013...
Yes, after a year the Wii U has a nice stable of high quality exclusive titles. There's plenty to play on the system, and 2014 is looking good. But to say the system has had a "fantastic" first year is to ignore the serious issue the Wii U has had. It might be meeting peoples expectations now... but that's only because many have tempered their expectations.
just picked one up. the gamepad is amazing.
Non-stop releases for the diehard Nintendo fan.
Yeah it's killing me LMFAO!I've been cracking up at that Geoff and Reggie GIF for a good five minutes now XD
ExactlyA handful, just like the Wii U. GAFs selective memory tends to ignore that fact though. Chances are PS4 and XBone will have same problem too, but it will be rationalized in some rediculous way to justify the overblown hype people have for these systems.
My favorite console right now. Extremely underrated.
This is just in total defiance of reality. Non-stop? Not even Nintendo would say their release schedule has been non-stop. There were huge gaps between releases.
Here's Nintendo's published games:
Nintendo Land
NSMB 4
NSMB 4.5
Lego City Undercover
SiNG Party
Game and Wario
Windwaker remake
Wonderful 101
Pikmin 3
Wii Party U
Wii Fit U
2/5th of Wii Sports remake
You really think that's a "non-stop" release schedule for "the diehard Nintendo fan"? Really?
I have a Wii U. I have only truly enjoyed 1 game on Wii U, and that is debatable. I am looking forward to a couple more games on the Wii U. Overall, I wish I didn't have a Wii U.
Which game? You must be very selective, because I've enjoyed several games for the Wii U. Hope you enjoy it more next year.
The first year has absolutely been amazing. Right up there with the best of them. I really don't know what you are smoking unless it is the GAF pipe or the sale-age pipe.
Non-stop releases for the diehard Nintendo fan. A new Mario from the 3D Land folks at the one-year anniversary is just icing on the cake.
And I have not even gotten 101...simply because I don't care for beat-em-ups. But that is just one more title.
Look what came in my dorm mail today!

The Wii U and I share a birthday.
I also said it before, but that's not true considering Toki Tori 2+ has been launched this year.Said it before, but the best three games of the year!
Love my wii u. Wish I had more time to play. Happy B-day little guy. May fortune shine a little brighter on you in the coming year.
Paid 179 Euro for my system during the summer when the Wii U was not selling at all in europe and most big box retails were dropping it like a fly.
I'm really happy with my system!
As long as nintendo does not have a account system I'll not buy anything digital sadly and the system needs to be faster and more connected.
But overall I'm very happy with it.
Playing Zelda WW HD right now and on the 29th Mario comes out and will be playing that for while.
What about Toki Tori 2+ or Wonderful 101? If you're waiting for Bayonetta 2, Wonderful 101 it's of the same genre and absolutely awesome, at the same level of quality than the first Bayonetta but with much more content and variety.I only ever got Zombi U (meh) and Pikmin 3 (pretty fun), honestly nothing else really grabbed my attention. Looking forward to Mario Kart 8, Bayonetta 2, and X... guess there will be another inch of dust on the device before we are there.
Biggest console disappointment ever, and I have a Vita.
It is not solely linked to your NNID. It is also linked to your hardware, so it may as well not be linked to any NNID. A pure account system would allow us to log our NNID into any system and play our games. The DRM in this case would be the NNID and the games would only run under that account name.Nintendo does have an account system. All your digital purchases are linked to your NNID. How to people still pretend this is not the case.

Even if we could somehow change our "primary system", so replacing broken hardware or buying/selling used systems would be more viable. As it is now, you basically have to call and hope for the best.

I'm on the bench for Wonderful 101 as it seems more like a game to play in short bursts, and it looks like I'd grow tired of it rather quickly.
Toki Tori 2 is just not for me from what I've seen, absolutely not the style or genre I'd normally play. But thanks for the suggestions!
