I remember being so excited for the Wii back in 2006.. I had it on pre-order and the evening before release, I got an e-mail from the store saying it was available (the Wii launch wasn't so big here in Belgium). Drove over to the story as quickly as I could and picked it up a few minutes before they closed
They didn't have any games in yet though so all I had was Wii Sports for the first few days. Still, it was an awesome experience in the beginning, felt very novel - and when I got Zelda a few weeks later (IIRC it was around Christmas, since I had exams the first few weeks after the Wii's launch), I was hooked.
It's a pity it failed to deliver later though. I remember being very excited for the few games that were coming out (Metroid Prime 3, Super Mario Galaxy, Super Paper Mario) and basically playing through my backlog and VC games while waiting for those. Once they came out... it was waiting again, this time for Brawl and Mario Kart. Then I got tired of it and got a 360 (should have kept playing through my backlog actually, my PS2 and GCN backlog is still quite big xD). The Wii ended up collecting dust for the rest of its lifetime, with the exception of Super Mario Galaxy 2 - which I loved - Donkey Kong Country Returns and NSMB. I just got Zelda though so I'll probably play it a lot one last time.
It was not the best of systems, but the few good games there were left me with a lot of fond memories. Twilight Princess and the two Mario Galaxy games are among my all-time favorites, and playing through Paper Mario and Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask on the VC were also great experiences. I do think the N64 (which I only owned for a year, around 2005) and GameCube were both better systems when it comes to the game selection.
