Happy Birthday PSP (2 years old)

I want an PSP, but don't have any money, it gets cheaper everyday though, only 149 Euros right now... I need to get a job for the PSP !

I've been thinking of getting one, there is a good amount of games I'm interested, but seriously, it needs a pricedrop. Its ****ing expensive to pay 200€ for the base pack, after all this time.

As I planned some time ago, 2007 will be break-or-deal for PSP for me. FF7CC is the key.

Just check out Ebay... I Don't know why, but there are many new PSP with cash recipes for few cash...

I've been very tempted at $249 AU but I'll hold out until it drops to $199 AU. I don't expect that though until Christmas 07 at the earliest.

Lumines
Ridge Racers
Tekken
GTA
Virtua Tennis
Ace Combat
Metal Gear
Gradius
Alpha 3

decent screen for picture viewing. good video player.

almost never leaves the house though. worthy purchase if you can easily afford one.

throw in all the other shit it can do, and i think it's obvious people will sing a different tune when it hits $149

redesign or not.

Two years went fast!
wow just wow.
PSP is a great system, greatest system since the PSONE.
10 out of 10.

Ah yes, I absolutely love the PSP. I've put so much time into the system and there are loads of great games available for it. I'm not sure how anyone can refute that. Sure, the games aren't for everyone, but that doesn't mean it doesn't offer a fantastic library.

I own only 7 DS games and there really aren't any more that I'm interested in, but that doesn't mean the library doesn't holds tons of appeal for others.

I love my white PSP...

I'd still recommend Pursuit Force, its one of the best underdog releases for the system.

MG:PO just arrived on my doorstep this morning, so I hope I can finish the story mode of Vice City Stories today so I can focus on that..

Will get Parappa next..

With PS3 just being released and PSP clearly being a part of that strategy, there's no reason to believe PSP is going to die any time soon. In fact, the experience we have with PSP in the next 2 years will probably be very different with downloadable content, media streaming, and of course, More Games.

It's almost as if people have a vested interest in it failing, or something. I dunno.

Great system. The audio quality in the right games still impresses me to no end. I've probably sunk a lot more hours into it than the DS, but that's because most of the games on the PSP that I've played are long 20-30 hour experiences rather than short arcadey games.

Really wish they would make an upgraded version with a better screen that has no ghosting though. A price drop + that would make me sell my old one and upgrade.

Yeah, I really wish for an upgraded PSP, too... The biggest hinderance for me isn't the games (because I've found quite a number of enjoyable titles on the system) but it's the actual system design. Please fix these:

-D-Pad
-Screen ghosting
-Glossy finish that collects fingerprints and gunk
-Drive access time
-Give the speakers more bass! - like you say, the audio quality in certain games is good (I absolutely LOVE the music in EEE, Wipeout Pure, the Lumines games) but it just has a very tinny sound coming out of the speakers, you pretty much need bass for electronic music to sound good. I just end up hooking the system up to my computer speakers or a good pair of headphones though.

Oh and btw Sony really screwed the pooch on the US RPG release list. The Tales games, the Suikoden collection, BOF3, Princess Crown, Devil Summoner, and especially Tengai Makyo IV would have been awesome. Sigh...

P.S. to everybody in this thread... BUY EVERY EXTEND EXTRA

eh... I still am not a fan of the games for the system, but having taken my firmware back to 1.5 I can now say the thing is only beaten by the original xbox in terms of homebrew. being able to play any media format from memory stick and having gunstar heroes on the go ftw.

edit - also can't wait for them to launch the PSOne store directly to the PSP.

There still hasn't passed a day without using my PSP (since april 2005). I play games on it every day, read the latest news and read my email while lying on my bed and listen to my music while biking to school: I love the damn thing.

Scew the haters, PSP has got enough great games, who cares DS is beating the shit out of it saleswise that doesn't make PSP nor its games worse.

Can't wait to play Gurumin, DJ Max 2, Monster Kingdom: Jewel Summoner (thanks Sony for bringing this over), R&C, Silent Hill Origins and of course FFVIICC.

The only thing that's not perfect on PSP is the amount of titles that make use of the PSP's online capabilities (although that's changing a little bit with FTB2, MoH:Heroes and MGSPO just released). BUT PLEASE GIVE ME WIPEOUT PURE 2 WITH WI-FI, PLEEEAAASE.

worst purchase as far as gaming goes for me..i own 2 games. ridge racer and hot shots...my battery lasts about 2 hrs and even on a full charge if I don't play it in like a week my battery is dead.

Wow, that's unfortunate. Seems like you haven't even given it a CHANCE since launch, though.

I would've have liked to given it a chance..I still do. I'd like to try some of the games out. The whole firmware update things makes it shitty for me though. I'd like to keep homebrew. I know there is devhook...i need to look into that. But my main issue is the price of the games and the type of games available. The games available for the machine are better off played on a console. It really makes no sense for me to be at home and play GTA on a portable sitting 5 feet away from my tv. I like the machine..I think sony hasn't really done much with it other than cheap firmware updates that just make it a pain for those of us who would like to buy games without having to mess with our psp first to get them to work.

1) Devhook is incredibly simple to use. It's as simple as copying a bunch of files to a memstick, running the APP once, and then rebooting into the new firmware. Easy as could be and gives you full access to the library (at 333 MHz).

2) Most of the BEST games on the system work very well on a handheld. GTA was impressive, technically, but one of the games I've spent the least amount of time playing (and I did not buy Vice City).

3) If you go out and take a look, you'll find that loads of games are selling for extremely low prices (many great games can be had for ~$20) with many of the best NEW games retailing for either $30 or $40. Only a few games are going for $50 and, quite frankly, many of those are console ports from companies like EA.

4) I know it's unfortunate that your battery is crap (my original PSP battery still gives me 4-5 hours of playtime even when using 333 MHz), but the new batteries available at retail are more than replacements; they actually offer a longer life than the older batteries ever did.

You simply haven't given the machine a fair shake and I think you'd find a lot of entertainment if you went in with a positive attitude.

I'll tell no lies. I was extremely disappointed with myself for buying a PSP pratically at launch. The technology seduced me, but my complain was (and still is) the lack of games suitable for a pick up and play handheld experience. Thankfully I managed to sell my PSP to a co-worker at a profit!! (I bought from the USA and the pound is stronger)

I understand what you are saying, but my Windows Mobile 5 iPAQ PDA does all the reading email, web browsing, RSS feeds, multimedia etc much better than the PSP. Heck it has a VGA screen, so movies look JUST AS GOOD on it. Furthermore it takes SD cards and Compactflash. Heck of a lot cheaper than memory stick duos. My Ipaq currently has 12 gb of memory to hand.

As for playing games.. well my DS lite covers that. Games such as Phoenix Wright and Clubhouse Games accentuate the handheld experience because they are equivilaint to curling up with a good book.Futhermore I can jump into these games quickly on my morning commute without waiting on menus, loading and FMV intros.

But I think PSPs main problem is that it is pushed so heavily as a multimedia device, but fails in that regard. If the emphasis had been on HANDHELD gaming from day 1, then im sure PSPs fate would have been different.

@Btrboyev: Try Ultimate Ghosts 'N Goblins, Exit ($20?), Lumines ($20?) and DJ Max Portable. They all have a lower price than the average PSP game and all are GREAT portable games.

@darthbane2k: But does it play games?

No. My PDA DOES play games, but obviously it doesnt work well as a gaming device. Thats what my DS Lite is for. But for the other bells and whistles that the PSP performs, eg browsing web, email, RSS, MP3, Movies , Networking, Document viewer, GPS etc - my PDA kicks its ass - plus its my DIARY, my organiser, I have it with me whereever I go. Remember I had my PDA first, even before I got my PSP, which made it even more redundant to me.

Im still gonna wish the PSP a happy birthday though. Isnt it also the DS' birthday? or was that earlier?

I think the whole point of the PSP is the console experience on the go. Like, when I was staying at my grandparents in vermont, I felt no need to bring a console, because the PSP was sufficent in the console-like experience. I agree if you only play your portables at home, then the PSP becomes a bit redundant.

That said, there are a few good "pick up and play" games out there for the machine.

Ok, that's fair. I can understand you're using the superior PDA for your multimedia needs, but as long as you bought a PSP mainly for the games (which i did) I don't think you'll be disappointed with it's somewhat less performance on multimedia. I also think the screensize is really nice for watching movies and browse the internet. I hate doing so on my cellphone, but the PSP's slick widescreen is GREAT for it (hate the 'theres not enough memory' message while browsing the internet though ><).

I totally agree with the D-pad comment and analog nub complaints. I can imagine a better D-pad, but I have no idea how to put in a better analog control given the form factor.

Loading times don't bother me that much, but I just now figured out why some people are continuing to complain. There is a big difference between the time it takes to load a NEW GAME, and the loading times WITHIN a game. The first number seems to take as long as any PS2 game, but the latter has improved tremendously since the first batch of games on the system. I really don't understand how loading within a game is a serious problem anymore...but if most of the complainers have a habit of switching games multiple times per day, that might make more sense. (Well, no, not really -- who the hell does that?)

The speakers are less than adequate, but it's physically impossible to have good bass coming from small speakers. PSP demands headphones. My only small nit on the audio is that I wish it would be louder -- it's somewhat hard to hear everything on an airplane, even at full volume.

@Btrboyev: Try Ultimate Ghosts 'N Goblins

I have no interest in a game I know i will never finish, and I've heard the game is just too hard and i don't have the patience for that kind of thing on a portable. I want to check out the mega man games and the new mgs though.

I was just playing through Killzone: Liberation last night thinking how awesome it was, and now I sign on to see that it's the PSP's bday.

Happy Birth Day PSP! You've given me so much enjoyment, and I look forward to much more from you in '07.

I almost pulled the trigger near launch, but after playing with my friend's launch unit, I decided to pass. It's a bit too big for my taste, I absolutely loathe the load times on a portable (especially since it's usually so damn long), and it desperately needs a second nub for camera control since most devs are bringing PS2-esque 3D games.

Until then, no portable for me unless I find a GBA SP for like $30 or something.

So do people go to birthday parties IRL just to say they hate the person having the birthday? I'd like to see that.

I have to agree. I find the hardcore PSP hate hilarious.

The "PSP haz no gaims roofies" didn't have much credibility in the first place. It had an impressive launch, one of the best launches of all video gaming machines. The post launch drought did kind of suck but I doubt most of the haters went back to play all the good launch titles that were available. I know it took me a while to get through Ridge Racer and HSG Open Tee had a lot of gameplay.

Now it has even more games and I still see the same arguments and attacks.

That said, I did sell it off August 2005.

*raises hand*

I've done it. Called my cousin a spoiled brat and stormed right off!

I'd like to add that I was five and he was three.

Damn, so no YouTube footage I take it?

Recently picked up Syphon Filter for the PSP (after VCS, Ace Combat, MLB 06, Tekken, Moster Hunter and Virtua Tennis), and I am once again impressed with the greatness of the PSP.

I had never owned a handheld before, and now, my PSP gets more playtime than my consoles and I have yet to get MGS:PO, and the rest of the great games.

Well, I'm not down with bashing the PSP needlessly in this thread, but going to someone's birthday party in real life just to say you hate them? That's good clean fun. Don't take that away from me.

I hope the PSP pulls up. So much long-term potential hardware-wise, so many awesome games. It might be too late for #1 but I'm sure they can turn around the software sales situation sufficiently to make a very profitable #2 out of it.

Redesign, hardware/software price drop, I don't know. Sony has to do something. I want to celebrate the 4th and 5th birthdays too.

Agreed.

-D-Pad (yep; though I actually got mine modded so it's personally not an issue)
-Screen ghosting ( ;_; )

-Glossy finish that collects fingerprints and gunk (heh, sure but some fingerprints aren't really game breaking :P)
-Drive access time (honestly, I think developers have got this down pat at this point. All the PSP games I've got in the last 6-12 months have had short or no loading).

-Give the speakers more bass! - like you say, the audio quality in certain games is good (I absolutely LOVE the music in EEE, Wipeout Pure, the Lumines games) but it just has a very tinny sound coming out of the speakers, you pretty much need bass for electronic music to sound good. Yeah, I only play my PSP with good DJ headphones on. Whereas I don't bother with headphones when playing the DS. The speakers on the PSP are terrible, especially considering the high quality of the audio in games.

Oh and btw Sony really screwed the pooch on the US RPG release list. The Tales games, the Suikoden collection, BOF3, Princess Crown, Devil Summoner, and especially Tengai Makyo IV would have been awesome. Sigh...

Definitely. While it might not be a big reason in the failure of the PSP in the west, not having all these great rpgs (that most people in the US have never played) definitely kept the rpg fanbase from picking it up in droves and hurt the variety and quality of the PSP library. Having DJ Portable Max released in the west would've helped as well...

Eh, I hope not. While I think it's great that it can be a portable CPS2 machine and whatnot, the original game library is pretty good and I'd hope PSP was remembered for all it's great games, not just as some portable PC w/mame.

hey dark10x, i'm considering using devhook. i have an old 1.50 japanese PSP that i'd like to try this on. what are the chances of bricking the system, if any?

As far as I know, there ARE no chances.

Devhook doesn't write to any of the flash, so it's as simple as slapping it on your memory card (correctly) and running it.
