Happy Canadian Flag Day

although it is not a legal holiday, today marks the 50th anniversary of the Maple Leaf flag / l'Unifolié replacing the Canadian Red Ensign

"The flag is the symbol of the nation's unity, for it, beyond any doubt, represents all the citizens of Canada without distinction of race, language, belief or opinion."
The red bars represent the Pacific and Atlantic oceans
The Maple Leaf represents unity.
Colours: In 1921, King George V proclaimed the official colours of Canada as red, from the Saint George's Cross, and white, from the French royal emblem since King Charles VII.

the adoption of the Flag was not welcomed by everyone back in 1965, several designs were suggested by different MPs and political leaders.

Lester Pearson's preferred choice for a new flag was nicknamed "the Pearson Pennant".

"Group C" finalist considered by Parliamentary committee

3,541 entries were submitted: many contained common elements:

2,136 contained maple leaves,
408 contained Union Jacks,
389 contained beavers, and
359 contained Fleurs-de-lys.

Just like the American flag, the Maple leaf is masterfully crafted commercial branding. It could only ever get better if the leaf was replaced with the Ghostbusters ghost.

so fucking ugly and unrepresentative of my people. the rare times i see people rocking that flag over here, i judge them.

Eek! What's wrong?

he is probably a homogeneous nationalist who thinks only his kind are deserving of their own symbol only,

I prefer to collectively work together in unison by pooling our diversity behind one unified force instead of dividing them by ancestral blood lines

We have an awesome flag! Thanks for starting this thread.

Cheers

And did I mention that I too live in Quebec? Please don't judge us all by the actions of a few people. Proud to be Canadian.

Oh my god I missed this thread I searched national close the other topic

The Canadian Flag is truly ahead of it's time when, minimalistic and to the point.

Nice!

An on top of that, Happy Louis Reil day to anyone (me) who gets tomorrow off as a Canadian stat holiday! :)

Aren't Maple trees mostly in Quebec anyway?

Having the Fleur-de-lis on a flag seems somewhat like having the Union Jack on a flag. Granted, the Fleur-de-lis does look better.

When you dig into the history the maple leaf was becoming the symbol of Canada well before the flag adoption so in the end, it's only natural that it becomes the symbol of the country.

So yeah, the beaver had no chance.

Whenever I see Canada's old red ensign I think of how badly Australia and New Zealand need to replace their flags with some cool home grown national symbol.

IMO NZ should definitely switch over to the silver fern flag.

All sorts of "yay Canada" nationalism aside, Canada's flag is a really good design. It closely follows the 5 rules of good flag design.

1. Keep It Simple
The flag should be so simple that a child can draw it from memory…

2. Use Meaningful Symbolism
The flag’s images, colors, or patterns should relate to what it symbolizes…

3. Use 2–3 Basic Colors
Limit the number of colors on the flag to three, which contrast well and come from the standard color set…

4. No Lettering or Seals
Never use writing of any kind or an organization’s seal…

5. Be Distinctive or Be Related
Avoid duplicating other flags, but use similarities to show connections…

The Quebec and Nunavut flag are also great for following these rules

Now we just need to update the Alberta, Yukon, North West Territories, Manitoba, and Ontario flags.

Also [controversial opinion incoming?] the BC flag is too complicated and should be simplified.

As has been said, Ontario could really use a new flag. Shame nobody seems to care enough to bring the issue up. It's not really an important issue, but it'd be nice.

I've always loved the Nova Scotian flag (you could argue that the lion crest in the middle is a bit too busy, but it works)

As a British Columbian myself, I have to agree. Every time I look at it, it's like a bad MS Paint job/Powepoint clip art; even more jarring when compared to the other provincial flags.

The general idea of sun on waves is an excellent motif, but it's just too busy and needs to be simplified. I'd suggest removing the union jack as well, though that might not make sense unless you went so far to rename the province.

Ontario is too embroiled in partisan bullshit these days for anyone to even consider bringing it up.

Plus, they changed the Ontario logo a few years ago, and it looks like garbage. I can't imagine a flag change would be any better right now.

Well you see, the logo used to be the Trillium. But now it's 3 people in a hot tub.

yup, I fully agree with you. The Quebec flag really did well to simplifiy it from its reference which was the Carillon-Sacré-Coeur

Other notable good provincial flags that i find nice:

Nova Scotia

Saskatchewan

IMO, Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta and lol BC should update theirs

BC's flag should be the same as Canada's, except replace the maple leaf with a pot leaf and make it green instead of red.

If I see a Canada-related thread on Neogaf, I can be 99% sure there's gonna be gratuitous Quebec-bashing. How predictable.

I've seen it on enough maple leaf tattoos and patches on backpacks to know how meaningful it is to young Canadians abroad. Plus, it probably helps stop people from asking "Are you American?"

Dat Quebec salt

As said before, he shot first. Quebec brings all of the bashing it gets on itself.

Our flag is wonderful and I shudder to think of how ugly it would be if a fleur-de-lis somehow made it one there.I love it for how simple and yet iconic it is, so recognizable everywhere.

Yup. It's not like the maple leaf represents England in any way whatsoever. It's just Quebec's "we're special" complex on full display.

A québécois doesn't like the canadian flag, so it's okay to shit on Quebec. Okay, lol.
