Has a western dev ever tried making a "jrpg"?

You don't have so much freedom to do what you want and a big focus on the main story? Probably a JRPG
Anime characters and tropes? JRPG
A big group of characters and between them a bigger focus in friendship than love? JRPG
A classic turn based system or a fast combat system in real time? JRPG
And many other things

Except for a few games (Dark Souls is one that is always called jrpg and not-jrpg by a bunch of different people) It's not so hard to see what looks a jrpg

Turn based combat systems have been in Wrpgs since the dawn of time.

Turn based and party system is in no way exclusive to JRPG:s.

Lots but I think Anachronox stands out from the pack by being mechanically like a jRPG but not looking or sounding like a lame imitation of one. Also the writing makes it hold up even as the graphics and such aged.

IIRC, Anachronox borrowed as much from Terry Pratchet-esque stuff as JRPGs which probably accounts for the distinction.

Black Sigil (inspired by SNES RPG):

I think this game had literal FF6/Chrono Trigger sprites, didn't it?

Neither is this:

Unless Mass Effect and The Witcher are JRPGs now.

True, but both of those games still have way more roleplaying than atleast the JRPG:s I'm used to. My experience with them isn't very vast though. But you do have more input in how invidual stories play out or what the state of the world and main story is at the end than like in Final Fantasy games for example. Or the personality of your main character.

Septera Core, and this is a amazing game. Top view, ATB turn based and with photo background inspire directly from JRPG from PS1. I highly recommend it !

edit :

There's a lot, with Septerra Core being my first western JRPG.

Sorry you said it first ! great choice !

Hate myself for not finishing Septerra Core... that game was something special... fantastic world and characters!

Came to post Silver, but I see it's been well referred.

A lot of them, and majority are subpar.

I think the only Western JRPG that I liked was Secret of Evermore.

Summoner (and Summoner 2) felt a lot like JRPG's to me (yet had a lot of influences from WRPG's too).

Really interesting games btw. Particularly the second.

If we're talking manga / anime artstyles, Regalia: of men and monarchs is a good recent example of a western indie game that actually looks like it was made in Japan.

I mean, Japanese developers has made western like rpgs and action games. Why is it so hard for western devs to make something similar to Final Fantasy?

I'm sure it's already been mentioned but South Park: The Stick of Truth (and the sequel probably) are pretty much traditional JRPGs in terms of game play mechanics, they're just presented in the South Park wrapper.

Dragon Age Origins played a whole lot like Final Fantasy XII on consoles.

huh .. you know this statement is sort of blowing my mind. I've never thought of it like this before. All DA games, including the newest one, do have the gambit system in them.
