Has anyone ever actually finished a complete game of Risk?

Yes, dozens of times. More than Monopoly, which is the real game of attrition.

This is a line often uttered when Monopoly is brought up.

Last time I played Risk, I started in Australia, got some insane rolls, and the game was over within an hour. I've never seen that happen before.

In college we painted a Risk board on a giant piece of plywood and put it over our pool table, and played full games smoking cigars and getting hammered.

I've always finished every game. Sometimes we stopped early when it was obvious who the winner was going to be.

Don't know if the Italian version of the game is any different though

Every time I've played, I think. Though sometimes we'd end it early once the end was in sight.

My strategy was always to spread out from Australia.

What's everyone's problem with Monopoly? I finished that plenty of times.
Risk global conquest takes a lot longer for me.

Risk is my favorite game of all time. I can't find anyone to play with now that I've moved to the West Coast though-all my friends back on the East coast played all the time-friendships ended because of that game.

The best story I've heard though is this-I went to a party held by a friend of my wife. The husband of this friend was there and I was talking to him. He was retired Navy. He said he was stationed on a carrier out at sea while he was active and some of the men went into one of the planning rooms that wasn't being used ; they used the giant table-map of the world to make their own giant-sized version of Risk. They even made their own giant pieces and painted them the right colors and everything. The room wasn't being used at night, so they would sneak in there after their shifts and play this giant sized game of Risk by themselves. Well it turns out they got caught, and the Captain found out. They thought they were in deep shit. It turns out the next night, they got their punishment-the Captain sent down his second in command who was a strategic mastermind to play Risk with them and he beat the pants off of them.

The last time I played a guy got mad and flipped the board. lol

That happened to us one night. One person was dominating everyone for the first 2 hours of the game. The person in last place decided to go on a suicide run and knock both of them out of the game. The person who had been in first flipped the board and sent pieces everywhere and then sat in his car in the driveway fuming for like an hour before coming back and telling us off.

Risk is best played with lots of players.

The game becomes a long stalemate if there are only 2 players

3rd and 4th players render the game more dynamic
.

Monopoly. Now that one is pointless

The "trick" with Monopoly is play by the rules. It's the house rules bullcrap like getting money on Free Parking that makes the game drag into infinity. They also do have an official variant with a speed die that drastically speeds up the game as well. Not that I'm a fan of the game but we do have it and play it on occasion.

I once attacked Greenland with like 30 units and my friend had 3 units and I lost. Well I quit when I got down to like five. I have never been more angry in my life.

I played this game from 11am until 4am on Christmas Eve once. Ended up with my cousin ripping the board in half. Good times. Risk is one of my favorite games of all time.

Well that's plain not true
Have you tried any of the Risk variants like Risk 2210 or Risk Legacy? They give players a lot more decisions to make and they have game-end conditions other than total world domination. I believe base Risk's main weaknesses are its simplicity and long run time.

What's great about this story is that everyone will read this anecdote and understand. No one would think "Well that's an extreme reaction." Everyone gets it.

Eh, even global conquest doesn't take that long to finish.

If people are cuthroat about it whoever manages to get australia usually wins pretty quickly.

Monopoly rarely takes longer than 2 hours. Risk I have never played but it seems similar to ATTACK! which can be finished in about 2 hours too.

It's bound to happen sooner or later. Nothing boils the blood among family as bad as risk.

Risk Legacy is the greatest boardgame I've ever played. Between me and my friends, we have now purchased three copies. Nothing, nothing, prepares you for those first few games. It was a hell of an experience.

I also recommend the extra content by the creators that you can download for free.

Regarding the OP and original Risk, stalemates happen for a number of reasons. Perhaps your opponent is a turtler - attack them early, throw them off guard, don't allow them to play to their strengths. CRUSH THEM.

Never did total domination. When the mood becomes a bit too testy to continue, we just ended it with a game of chance. Shuffle the countries and each draw means the country was "nuked." Last claimed country remaining wins. Give everyone remaining a chance to win while favoring the lead. Also a surprisingly good way to let off some steam.

Every time I tried to play that as a kid we'd play for like 3 hours with no end in sight and everyone would get bored and stop.

Every game seemed to devolve into a deadlock.

Yeah, all the time. We used to play it as kids just about once a week. Awesome game.

I've only played one game and when it became clear my legions would sweep across every continent like a never ending storm my family refused to carry on playing :(

Risk Legacy in my opinion is the truest test of friendship. There were some heated moments that resulted days of silence lol

Risk feels so easy after having played Twilight Imperium multiple times. 8-12 hours oh god.

I've owned a copy of that game since around 1999 and have yet to find enough dedicated people to play.

I don't know that I've ever played a full game of Risk to know, but is it more or less complicated than Axis and Allies? My games of that tend to go on for 8 hours.

I have often gotten to the point where everyone pretty much agree that it's over, so we just call it as such. Not much point in spending another 30 minutes rolling dice when one person holds 95% of the board and has the other players cornered, surrounded by a seemingly endless army.

Eh? One game hardly takes 3 hours unless everyone is a chicken who are afraid of pissing off friends and no one is taking any risks or attacking hard on enemy territory. Friendships have been strained by asshole-ish tactics & extremely good luck with dices.

EDIT: World domination? The game has those goal cards for a reason. Much more manageable.

Monopoly, when played properly goes quite quickly. Not auctioning properties and adding extra money to the game ruins it though.

I haven't played a game of Monopoly since I learned about the auction rule a few years ago, but I'm guessing that would definitely speed things up, as would the no money on free parking.

You guys are in for a trip.

First game was great, ended with a betrayal and swift victory but the 2nd was just a mess that was over in like 6 turns. I'll just have to read the rules a few more times to see if we are doing the setup wrong but again, zero new rules have been added at this point.

Last time I played monopoly was with my niece, who simply wanted to be the bank for once. There wasn't going to be speed when a 10 year old is doing mental math and realizing she wasn't being punished by not being the bank.

Ah, good times. I doubt I'll ever have to play monopoly again.

And at least nobody will ask me to play Cranium with them ever again. I can stick to games I enjoy.

I've played a game that took all weekend once with my buddies. We did world domination, but defeated players could go full on underground tactics, hide their armies, and wage a guerilla war to wreak havoc and force the remaining players to waste armies and resources fighting them. It's turned into an ugly mess but eventually one of us pulled ahead and mopped up.

Lol I remember we were playing The Lord of the Rings version of Risk. It literally came down to me camped out in Mordor, with waves of enemies flooding in the last remaining area. Was suprisingly epic lol, but ended up losing,
