Has anyone ever actually finished a Myst game without a walkthrough?

I have a quick and possible silly question, since I'm new to the series. Is it possible to do something that will get you permanently stuck in the Myst games (1-5)? I want to know if I need to be using different save files more often, or if everything is designed so that at least one "right" solution is always available until you figure it out. I know that some of the games may have different endings, but I just want to make sure I don't lock myself into "losing" and/or getting stuck forever. :)

I played Riven when I was like 12 and it blew my mind. I had to use a guide for one of the final puzzles because it made no sense. I really need to replay it.

Was just remembering how brilliant the number puzzle in Riven is. The game teaches you the numerical system of the world by sitting you down in a kid's schoolroom and making you play with the toys they use to teach their kids.
Yeah, that owned. I did figure that part out without help.

Usually i play myst with some of my friends, with a tons of block notes and drawing map to solve some of the puzzles.

Myst:
Finished in one day, probably the easyest. Didn't use any walkthrough

Riven:
The first time, when i was a kid, it took us 1 month and half to solve it.
The main problem with Riven was to find the passage hidden behind the doors leading to Gen's Lab.

Myst III Exile:
The easyest right after Myst, and the less inspired probably.
The only problem about it was Edanna, 'cause you always get lost.
Is the only one i played alone, and i finished it in one week and a half.
The OST was great, but the only age really worth playing was Amateria!

Myst IV Revelation:
The best one for me.
The ages were breathtaking, the story wonderful, the puzzles absolutely crazy.
Is the only one i used a walkthrough for, and specifically just for the throne puzzle in Syrrus prison age (in italian is named Pinnacolo, but i'm not sure about the english name)

Myst V End of Ages:
never played it properly.
I just don't like the fact that they shifted to pre-rendered graphics to real time 3D.

I don't really remember that you could get stuck.
Usually if you do something really wrong in these games you just die.
But don't worry, usually you'll have the feeling that you could die, so you don't really have to save the game every 5 minutes or so.

This thread is really making me want to play Riven again, but I've tried a ton of things to get it to work on my computer and it won't work. It's the Ubisoft-published re-release of Riven that's supposed to work with XP, and that's what I'm running, but it won't start.

i couldn't make my original copy work either, but i found online a weird copy that runs smooth without any installation.

If memory serves me right, it's impossible to lock yourself out of the rest of the game due to bad choices. You can just have a few bad endings due to wrong choices or not understanding the hints correctly but I think you can salvage most of those endings. There are unfortunately a handful of glitches that will cause the game to crash or prevent you from progressing. It's best to keep several backup saves to be on the safe side.
