That's.... certainly a way to view things. You're entitled to your opinion and all, but I have to wonder if there isn't even a tiny bit of hyperbole in that statement.
The fact that he chose New Super Mario Bros as an example is an obvious hint.

How can it save us when it can't even save itself?
I think from the other replies it is clear who does and doesn't own a Wii U here.
Took me a second to grasp the original poster's intent, but I think they have a point, if you look at it this way:
Traditional gaming is dead, aside from Nintendo. By that I mean, Sony and Microsoft have gone with the "games as cinema" approach, while mobile has veered off in whatever direction you want to call that.
If it weren't for Wii U, I'm not sure I'd be playing any contemporary games this generation. I'd basically be sitting the whole thing out. And I think that's the point the original poster is trying to make as well.

[...] so there is very little for me to justify a console purchase for one or two games. Way too many other games coming out on various consoles to play.
Yes for sure, my PS4 and Xbox One are just black boxes without any distinct attributes, I go back and forth depending on which platform the game runs best on. The Wii U however has a personality of it's own, my Wii U collection easily surpasses both my Xbox One and PS4 library in terms of both quantity and quality, I simply enjoy what the Wii U has to offer. That being said it's not perfect and it's almost a necessity to own another current gen console as there's too much to miss out on.
But yeah the Wii U has saved this gen for me, there's a handful of great games on PS4 and Xbox One but very few I would describe as "fun". I need fun games from time to time.
With the exception of The Master Chief Collection most PS4 and Xbox One games I just beat and shelved, i'm still playing Smash, Mario Kart, Pushmo World, Bayonetta 2, 3D World, Tropical Freeze and Wonderful 101. The bolded almost daily.
Know anyone who wants mine? Turned it on after a year for Bayo 2, now it is back to collecting dust.
Saved I was not.
"Has a personality" is the new "it has soul".
The thing that makes me annoyed is how a lot of posters like to just ignore 99% of the third party library on the other consoles just because they want to dismiss the good games on the other consoles over Nintendo.
Nintendo always has quality titles in house, but i don't think its weird at all if your like me and not at all satisfied with that limited output.
Nintendo alone can't save a generation, let alone its own console. I think the limited amount of people who bought a Wii U so far and proclaim it the saving grace have to acknowledge that.
Its very annoying how Nintendo gets away with being so ass backwards in a lot of ways, living like its the year 1990, and that's praised for 'bucking modern trends".
The market hasn't let them get away with their decisions this gen. Unless you only care about what people on the internet talk about lol

Plenty of game systems are defined by their software, when i think Dreamcast I think blue skies and smooth arcade like gameplay. When I think Wii U I think unique games that defy the status quo. PS4 and Xbox One aren't that distinguished as of yet and thus don't have much of a personality. The Xbox 360 for example was very unique when it launched with a bunch of exclusive titles but as time went on it began to lose it's personality.
No one can save this generations if you are an old console gamer
Oh yes NanomachinesPeople still say Nintendo magic?
I thought we all agreed that it was actually nanomachines.
Eh, i'm responding to some comments in this thread and what i hear as a defense of many of Nitnendo's policies, not really their marketshare
PS4/Xbox one had a really weak first year, PS4/XBO's 2015 and 2016 libraries are unquestionably better than the Wii U's lineups though.
