Has the Wii-U saved us this Gen?

Took me a second to grasp the original poster's intent, but I think they have a point, if you look at it this way:

Traditional gaming is dead, aside from Nintendo. By that I mean, Sony and Microsoft have gone with the "games as cinema" approach, while mobile has veered off in whatever direction you want to call that.

If it weren't for Wii U, I'm not sure I'd be playing any contemporary games this generation. I'd basically be sitting the whole thing out. And I think that's the point the original poster is trying to make as well.

Yes for sure, my PS4 and Xbox One are just black boxes without any distinct attributes, I go back and forth depending on which platform the game runs best on. The Wii U however has a personality of it's own, my Wii U collection easily surpasses both my Xbox One and PS4 library in terms of both quantity and quality, I simply enjoy what the Wii U has to offer. That being said it's not perfect and it's almost a necessity to own another current gen console as there's too much to miss out on.

But yeah the Wii U has saved this gen for me, there's a handful of great games on PS4 and Xbox One but very few I would describe as "fun". I need fun games from time to time.

With the exception of The Master Chief Collection most PS4 and Xbox One games I just beat and shelved, i'm still playing Smash, Mario Kart, Pushmo World, Bayonetta 2, 3D World, Tropical Freeze and Wonderful 101. The bolded almost daily.

From a personal standpoint as a gamer, without the bigger picture in mind. Yea maybe. Since I only care about Nintendo this gen so far, I can't even give a proper assessment. Though technically Wii U did save itself after it's first 2 abysmal years (again, from the standpoint of a gamer, not the actual bomba sales overall).

It saved me, I'm still waiting for the games that will push me to buy a PS4...

I'm not saying that PS4 or XBONE are bad consoles, is just that there aren't enough games (both exclusive and ports) that will make me buy them. I still use my xbox360 a lot.

"Traditional gaming is dead" ... Ugh

Years ago it was "Nintendo is about innovation" and we were happy because announcements like Donkey Kong Returns after years of motion oriented games.

I think from the other replies it is clear who does and doesn't own a Wii U here.

Strongly agree, it's a little surreal to me that some people havn't even played Nintendo games. I tend to play just about any genre on any platform but I just couldn't carry on this hobby without Nintendo games.

[...] so there is very little for me to justify a console purchase for one or two games. Way too many other games coming out on various consoles to play.

Pretty much exactly why I haven't picked up an XB1 or PS4 yet.

I'm sure eventually, when they hit ~$150-$200, I will. Actually, I'm lying, RB4 is forcing my hand re: an XB1 purchase, so yeah.

"Has a personality" is the new "it has soul".

The thing that makes me annoyed is how a lot of posters like to just ignore 99% of the third party library on the other consoles just because they want to dismiss the good games on the other consoles over Nintendo.

Nintendo always has quality titles in house, but i don't think its weird at all if your like me and not at all satisfied with that limited output.

Nintendo alone can't save a generation, let alone its own console. I think the limited amount of people who bought a Wii U so far and proclaim it the saving grace have to acknowledge that.

Its very annoying how Nintendo gets away with being so ass backwards in a lot of ways, living like its the year 1990, and that's praised for 'bucking modern trends".

I have little desire to grab a PS4 or XBone, mainly due to the disappointing 1st and third party software this Gen. I'm honestly surprised the PS4 is doing so well, but I suppose its easier for the masses to buy a PS4 than build a PC. My Wii U has high quality exclusives I can't get anywhere else and that's all I need and have time for right now, but maybe one day I'll build that dream PC.

Plenty of game systems are defined by their software, when i think Dreamcast I think blue skies and smooth arcade like gameplay. When I think Wii U I think unique games that defy the status quo. PS4 and Xbox One aren't that distinguished as of yet and thus don't have much of a personality. The Xbox 360 for example was very unique when it launched with a bunch of exclusive titles but as time went on it began to lose it's personality.

The market hasn't let them get away with their decisions this gen. Unless you only care about what people on the internet talk about lol

I think the WiiU is doing great with releasing an enticing line up of exclusive games. Sales wise and 3rd Party wise it is struggling but it is definitely a perfect second console for me.

Eh, i'm responding to some comments in this thread and what i hear as a defense of many of Nitnendo's policies, not really their marketshare

"Defy the status quo"
"Traditional gaming"

Also "options and everything". That are fine but don't say that we didn't play Nintendo games if we no agree about it.

from what?

I'd love to see a "Has the Xbox one saved us this Gen?" Thread. I'm sure I'd have to find a way to visit an alternate reality where a single person actually thinks that though.

The Wii U has an amazing library of quality games you just can't get anywhere else. In part, Nintendo has done a bunch to keep this Gen interesting and fun.

No it hasn't saved anything. Nintendo release solid products that are fun. They are pretty consistent too. I wouldn't say what they do has saved this gen since this gen is still relatively new in my eyes.

Being a Wii U owner I feel a little locked in since I can't have the cool 3rd party games everybody else gets but, I am still happy with N first party - which is to be expected.

Saved us? That's a bit much. It's got a small library that isn't going to get much bigger, but at the moment it does have more games on it that I want to play than the other 2 consoles combined, so I'll give it that.

People can defend crap like region locking and whatnot all they want, in the end, its just internet talk and not in any way affecting the bigger picture at all. Nintendo gonna Nintendo. We'll see how far that gets them. Nothing more to it.
Also you should probably use the ignore list if it gets a bit much with some posters that can't be argued with lol

Lol no
Saved our wallets from depleting from those super pesky 3rd party games maybe. Thanks N for looking out for my finances

I only own a PS4 and WiiU this gen and wish I only purchased the WiiU.

l own over 20 games for the WiiU and only own 4 on the PS4. The only game I've really enjoyed on the PS4 was P.T.

I'm obviously not in the majority, but Nintendo has given me much more enjoyment this gen than Sony or Microsoft.

Been the opposite for me. Sold both my wii u and xbox one due to libraries I have no interest in at all. Both went unused for months.
My ps4 rarely goes more than one day without me playing something on it.
If it wasnt for the ps4 I might not be playing anything this gen.
