Has the Wii-U saved us this Gen?

I've had a Wii U since launch and it has saved me.....heaps of money because I only have 7 games for it and the power cord hasn't been plugged in for atleast 5 months.

It did save me from those new sprites in FFVI mobile. I've been playing the hell out of it on the Wii VC instead.

I had a great time with ZombiU, too

I have Wii U and PS4 and they compliment each other pretty good.

If I had to chose one between the two I would be in a tough spot, would have to chose PS4 although I love Nintendo games, because of the lack of Multiplats.

If I had to chose one machine only, it would be PC then, thousands of games.

Nintendo games on the Wii U run and play beautifully, nothing to be ashamed of visually, actually look pretty amazing!!

What's so hard to believe about people buying the games they've asked Nintendo to make for years? I agree that having Zelda out "late" compared to being out last year isn't as clear cut as them simply waiting to start development but all the games he listed would push massive numbers of Wii U consoles.

I do find it hard to believe that any one person, or even the "GAF hivemind" could easily lay out the plan to sell 20 million Wii U's - even in a year as opposed to "overnight".
And then the part about "bam! third parties are back" or whatever is also wishful thinking.
People who genuinely believe they could shit out the necessary plans to handle the situation better than the actual employees responsible at Nintendo are the people I find hilarious.
20 million Wii U's overnight! Third parties back on board! With both hands tied behind my back, smokin' blunts and smackin' pinatas with ma dick!
Hilarious.

It's totally subjective. OP clearly isn't speaking in the context of market share, mind-share, capabilities, number of games. Only within context of his/her subjective opinion...which is kind of far.

Maybe 'The Wii-U saved this gen for me' would have been a more appropriate thread title and jumping-off point. There are a number of gaffers who only go PC-WiiU or claim WiiU is their most played console. It's not insane the suggest the console has some value.
Wii U is my most played console, and I even log more hours on it than I do on my decent PC. I don't have a PS4 or XBOne yet, no need - though I'll get one or the other at some point. (scalebound? maybe.)
I wasn't calling the OP hilarious, at all. I deeply appreciate the old-school, finished, polished games that have been released for the Wii U thus far. I'm digging this gen - on my Wii U and PC - mostly Wii U.

Well tbh I thought most older gamers would see my point of view, I've grown up with all the systems since the 2600, including all the mainstream UK home computers and the one constant throughout that has always been Nintendo, any other generation and it may not be something to shout about but so far this has been the worst generation outside of the Nintendo platform that I've suffered, so for me it's just highlighted how important Nintendo's first party has been for this generation, without it I seriously think I might of got bored of gaming for the first time in my life and I've been gaming for over 30 years.

Remember I did ask a question in the title, it wasn't a blanket statement, for me it clearly did, and tbh I didn't think it was going to be completely out of the realms of possibility that others may feel the same way, but if it didn't for you then fair do's.

And the only camp I'm in is the gaming one.

Tropical Freeze
Pikmin 3
Mario Kart 8
Bayo 2
3D World

Each of these is a master class in their respective genre.

NSMBU
W101
Smash Bros

These are each great games.

And there's other random things like Captain Toad, WindWaker, etc. Plus upcoming games like Xenoblade, Zelda, Wooly World and more.

If you're able to enjoy a wide variety of titles, and don't feel the need to avoid any of these, Wii U has been fantastic. If you're picky about genre, yeah it's gonna suck for you. You have to be ready to go with Nintendo's flow.

I own a Wii U and I don't agree with the OP. In fact, it's probably my least used system. So your statement is just plain stupid.
Same. Bayonetta 2 was cool, Smash and Mario Kart too, but I don't think I've used my Wii U in months. Maybe since Christmas, I got Donkey Kong and quite enjoyed it. I use my PS4 way more than my Wii U. I actually use my PS3 more than it too (there's always a backlog to work through, Final Fantasy XIII at the moment, I want to die).

Agreed.

The inscecent want for third party suport in this thread baffles me. Third party =/= quality games. No, the Wii U isn't a commercial success because of that and other factors. It remains a great console with some of the best games of these past years. I seriously can't understand how some people claim to like video games but act disgusted because Nintendo games "aren't mature enough" or "no COD no buy". But that's another debate I suppose.

Wii U saved nothing because this gen doesn't yet need saving. It's still a great console to have.

The Wii U came at the right time but everyone wanted to wait for the next great next gen console. That is the only thin that can explain the PS4's success to me with the lack of much on the horizon. People, including me, bought it on potenial and shit on the Wii U for it's alledged lack of potential. Yet, the Wii U actually has lots of new great games and the extended life cycle of consoles last generation has thrown everyone off. What do developers start planning for development for next gen now or do they expect this gen to go on really long again.

Nintendo has the right idea and they get treated like a leper not following the rest of the herd, even when they are like lemmings headed towards a cliff.

This gen has been mediocre so far. if you own a pc and wii u, there really isn't enough compelling reasons to buy a PS4 or Xbox One at this stage

Agreed.

It's just an excuse tbh. No one would buy a 3rd party Wii U game when they could get it on PS4 or PC. There is literally no point to multiplats on Wii U. It's just a fallback reason for people to ridicule the console.

I only own a PS4 and WiiU this gen and wish I only purchased the WiiU.

l own over 20 games for the WiiU and only own 4 on the PS4. The only game I've really enjoyed on the PS4 was P.T.

I'm obviously not in the majority, but Nintendo has given me much more enjoyment this gen than Sony or Microsoft.

nintendo games are unique. so is normal some people love them and others dont.
simple there is no science here dude

Look at all these bomb ass games.

Super Mario 3D World
Mario Kart 8
Smash Bros. 4
Bayonetta 2
Kirby and the Rainbow Curse
The Legend of Zelda The Wind Waker
Pikmin 3
Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze
The Wonderful 101
Captain Toad Treasure Tracker

Upcoming
Xenoblade X
Yoshi's Wooly World
Splatoon

Wii U stay winning.

Tell that to Nintendo. With the Splatoon DLC fiasco is clear they are also feeling the heat of having months with barren retail content between retail releases.

The BS that should end is the narrative of "they don't need third parties. They can sustain themselves".

Between the Wii U and PS3, the last 2 years have been saved in the very least.

The launch titles of PS4 just didn't do it for me and I'm still finding it hard to find something on PS4 that I want to actually play.

3rd parties aren't going to help them either.

No one is going to buy CoD on a Wii U.

The point isn't whether this is a sustainable model. Clearly it's not.

Agreed.

Its funny considering every exclusive that gets announced for any system there is salt on all sides then when theres a third party games coming they either going crazy over a downgrade, DLC season passes and all that other junk. People love posing like they enjoy video games but if something aint selling good they dont like it lol. Its not even about games then, mechanics, art, gameplay, level design, music.. none of that exist after they come to that conclusion.

Of course, Nintendo had years to prepare or try to catch the competition. His third party problems is neither new and just getting worse. The only one manufacturer that is becoming I incapable of sustain itself in the console bussiness is Nintendo.

That's why the "savior" label is laughable.

Agreed.

It's not a blind want for third party games to mark a checkbox. There are a lot of amazing games on other consoles that don't come to Nintendo for one reason or another. I've kind of given up on that ever happening again though.

Wii U is a good supplement for any other platform gamer, but it hasn't saved diddly squat, except my false impression that Nintendo couldn't do good graphics, cuz the games look great.

The Wii U and Nintendo's first party titles have definitely saved gaming for me as otherwise I would have given up on it altogether, but real talk: I'm quite disappointed in Nintendo dipping into the DLC pond.

What's next, Mario Kart 8 Complete Edition? *sigh*

I started gaming on the 2600 too...or Colecovision, cant remember...

But my taste have changed over the years. I used to love RPG, JRPG's...now I almost cant stand them...harsh words... I stayed playing FF, Phantasy Star, Chrono Trigger, Wild Arms ( I missed Secret of Mana and Breath of Fire)

Funny thing is my tastes started changing when FF7 and Metal Gear didnt make it to Nintendo but wound up on PS. yea...my console tastes started changing because of a JRPG.

I used to be a big Nintendo and Sega fan...I never had an allegiance to one console. Throughout the years I always had at least 2 just for exclusives alone. Back then my love for playing was split. When the PS 1 came out that changed. Nintendo became a 2nd console and not an equal one in my home.

As time went by....the exclusives didnt cut it anymore. Or Nintendo exclusives. I got alot and played alot on the Wii tho. That wore off as I got tired of the controls.

With the PS3 and 360...they had equal love in my home. With the PS2 and orig Xbox the Xbox started out as a 2nd console but became an equal one.

After the SNES....I just dont feel the same about Nintendo. Whats wild is some my fav games over the years were Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, Turok. Even for an old gamer.....sometimes ppl tastes do change.

You don't see nothing wrong with tone you are arguing this? Is okay that you only like stuff on WiiU, I can comprehend that. But don't you think people are not exactly thrilled to hear "savior", "older gamers" or "the only camp I'm in is the gaming one"?

The gen is still young, but yes, so far it's more or less the sole redeeming factor.

The gen is still young, but the Wii U isn't.

The Wii U is like a weird stop gap machine to fill in between generations. It did a pretty nice job of that, but the other machines are just starting to hit their stride while the Wii U is winding down.

In 2 years time someone will bump this thread and most people will have a good laugh. Some other people will have a good cry over the corpse of their beloved Wii U.
