Has there been FFX HD impressions yet?

Meh, never thought much of this game's music in general. Never stood out to me.

Glad to see the thread devolved into that argument right away instead of you know... if the game holds up well technically and all.

What I don't understand is that you can still revisit the game with the original ost at any point as intended. While he is being blunt, he's right. This remaster leaves the original untouched. You can ignore this version, as it seems to upset your memories of this game, and play the original instead. Something like trophy support shouldn't matter, your love of the original existed without trophies.

I think this is kind of missing the point, though. Yeah, of course you can go back and play the Playstation 2 version of the game. But it doesn't have the improved textures, the widescreen support (emulators notwithstanding), etc. This was FFX fans' chance to get an improved version of the game, and Square blew it. But it's not a complete loss -- there are still things that purists want to have, and people who pawned off their PS2 want something they can play on a current system that they actually own. There are reasons to want it, but for some people, the parts of the release that Square botched are too much to stomach. So it's kinda unsatisfying when the "solution" is to go play the original, especially when this should have been a competent re-release of a classic game that people have a lot of fond memories of.

I guess all I'm saying is that I can empathize.

I guess you and everyone else who defend this crap have no problem with the altered version of Star Wars too? You always have the VHS versions and shouldn't care about a blu ray release of the original...

Guess I'll hunt down a ps2..

I absolutely can't wait for 2.5 to hear how she handles that one, considering the original ps2 instrumentation is extremely weak compared to the first game.

Oh wow, I didn't even think about that!

so many good songs in that game were hurt by the poor quality and I've always wanted to hear an updated (but faithful) version of its music. It sounds like Shimomura respects the process of preserving the original and understands the true process of remastering so that should be exciting to listen to.

ETA: btw, fantastic post on the subject, luka.

I really liked how Shimomura handled the KHHD soundtrack. She simply improved the instrumentation and made small adjustments to bring out slightly more distinct musical flavor in some tracks. The music no longer sounds tone generated, but it still sounds like the same music. It's recognizable despite the huge jump in fidelity and the fact that no one complained that the original ost wasn't an option says a lot about how effective the remastering was. That she managed to do such an incredible job with it says a lot to me about her talent and professionalism. Hamauzu didn't improve the instrumentation, he changed the instruments completely. Many tracks don't even sound like the same songs, with layers of extra instruments and sounds thrown in, diluting it even more.

Honestly it's unforunate, but the fact that they needlessly tampered with the main character models and animations is a lot more egregious to me. Upping the resolution, touching up textures here and there, etc... that's one thing. But when you start altering geometry to change a characters appearance entirely for dubious reasons, then it's going too far. This isn't some low poly npc that never stood out due to the low resolution of the original game - these are the main characters, and everyone knows what they are supposed to look like.

This.

I honestly don't remember anything other than the battle theme. I remember the original KH soundtrack way more. No idea why since I've played through both at least three times.

Played it for a while now and there is indeed some real FPS drops in the vita version when there's lots of shit going on during the ingame cutscenes (battle, cgi etc is smooth though, ofcourse). But yea, some of those ingame cutscenes :x

If a piece of video game music can be so important to you that you describe it as a "part of your life" then that's your problem. Your reaction here is ridiculous since its their creation and they can do whatever they want with it. It's not like they took away the old version - that's still part of your life for you to access whenever.

George Lucas destroyed my childhood.

Seeing a bunch of people crying over the music is amusing...

Well, maybe if you guys cry harder, SE can offer the original music as DLC or something... since I never played the original, I don't think this will affect me as much as you guys.

I hear ya, but they said very early on that this wasn't gonna be just a plain, minimal remaster. SE's done a lot of shittacular crap lately, but it seems to me like this was genuinely a dearly held project for them. Not quite a full blown remake, but an up-make if you will a la OoT3DS. I think it's really cool that they went the extra mile.

And come on, even in the original, Tidus freaking switched from white guy to asian dude between in-game and the CGI cut-scenes. There's clearly a loose grip (with room for artistic license) as to how these characters' appearances are interpreted from Nomura's 2D designs.

Yeah no, your argument falls apart as soon as you compare it to a different medium. Nothing is stopping you from popping in your original PS2 copy into an emulator and outputting it in a proper widescreen/HD resolution. This type of up scaling isn't possible with a VHS.

I *get* that the music having a different inflection to you is really upsetting, and it seems to upset you so much that I say it isn't worth destroying your memories of the game on a revisit. So I say revisit the original instead.

This seems like an exaggerated analogy, especially considering we haven't played the HD version yet (at least here in the states.)

Just cause you update and re-imagine aspects of an older piece of work, it doesn't mean its integrity is automatically compromised or destroyed.

It kinda does.

The revised version isn't necessarily bad, but it's no longer the piece of work that people liked in the first place.

times like this it does make me wish the vita was fully hacked just so a original ost version would be possible.... i guess someone will get together a ps3 one someday.

needa go get a ps3 of that old fw though (._. )

Readily available in English.

No, it wasn't. European version doesn't count. It only has dark aeons. It doesn't have the international sphere grid, and it certainly wasn't available in North America, which is a huge part of the FF fanbase.

Unlike other International levels, the one for FFX has an English option since it was also released for the Asian market ( I believe even in the JPN release) back in a time where Asian means getting official JPN releases but not English releases.

The loading has been great for me. Playing digital version on my Vita.

Coming from an owner of a Vita and a CFW PS3, I hope the Vita never gets fully hacked. If it does, I fully expect piracy to become rampant like it did with PSP, thus killing localization chances.

And who decided that it had to be exactly the same original? Can't you guys see how ridiculous some of you are being with your dismissal of something that isn't even out yet? Most of you don't even put the fact that some people might actually like the new interpretation into your considerations.

I guess this varies from person to person, but (unless it's a blatant soul-less cash-grab) I always feel like it's a matter of breathing new life/evolving said piece of work. Sorry if this sounds pretentious but, I don't like putting artists in a box where they aren't allowed to spin new neat angles on works they've already done. I'm really eager to see how they reworked one of my favorite games for a modern release.

true true. It's just i can see the ps3 version getting ost dlc or some shit, but vita has near zero chance :(

FFX HD has international version changes. For both X and X-2, features that are not available in English before.

Stop spreading outright lies.

No you aren't you asshole.

Is this for real?

I completely agree with this. I think KH HD1.5 should have been the standard for FFX HD. They improved things while keeping it same with original.

KH 1.5 was great but they didn't even try to improve on some of the things they should have. Lots of lifeless faces. Looks like for FFX they took risks with models and music that some of you don't like. I don't mind the new tracks but wouldn't mind old OST DLC.

1) The soundtrack is out. I know I don't like it. The soundtrack is a big part of the atmosphere in FFX. It's a fair dismissal.

2) It's fine if other people like this version. I'm simply of the opinion that it's a hack-job.

Listened to the whole remastered soundtrack 3 more times and it's clear to me that most of the new arrangements are superior to the original. I can't wait to discover them again through the game with updated visuals.

I can certainly understand how some people might be attached to the originals and/or simply feel that some qualities were lost in the process (that's certainly true of some tracks). Opinions are fine, but saying it's a "hack-job" is just laughable in this situation. Couldn't be farther from the truth.

If I recall correctly, FFVII's Steam release didn't have intentionally re-arranged tracks, but was straight-up incomplete and missing instruments/sounds/etc.
This is because it was a straight up re-release of the old PC version from 1998 that used midi
I enjoyed the Chocobo racing. It was pretty easy. Butterflies were the frustrating ones for me.
Really? Even the race to get Tidus' ultimate weapon? Jesus that was annoying as fuck.

Couldn't agree more with you.

The race to get Tidus' weapon is awful.

The first few tries are frustrating, it gets easier though.

At least that's how it was for me, no idea why, I'm usually pretty shithouse at FF games, in X with the international sphere grid my characters were all over the fucking place, I had Auron in Lulu's grid for fuck sakes, but something about that race, idk, never gave me any real troubles.

I actually had more trouble with the lightning dodging.

Did people have problems with lightning dodging because they were just running around the plains and trying to dodge haphazardly? I always thought that was one of the easier ones to do (though tedious) because there are several places where you can just stand there and know almost exactly when the strikes are coming.

Yeah it definitely gets easier after a couple of tries but it's in no way what I'd call fun and enjoyable.

Oh yeah I agree, the race in itself is pretty fucking annoying.

I found trying to get Wakka's legendary frustrating, but just a casual game of it I didn't mind.

I think I mentioned this earlier but I cheesed Wakka's legendary....Score a goal and then get the ball and go hide in your goal. You'll never. Ever. Be pursued.

Wonder if they fixed it in the HD release...

i am willing to play with the new soundtrack and check it out, but i would love an option to bring back the old soundtrack.

just a side note, does any remastered hd version of a game supports dlc or game patches? not that i recall of.

Yeah I'm pretty sure it's not a hack job objectively speaking. Your score for it probably started at –5 simply because it was altered from the original.

With Square's reputation these days, of course there was a rebuttable presumption against it.

I've completely forgot most of the story in this game, and am loving replaying it.

Playing it in Japanese is an added bonus.

I'm still at the very beginning, but I don't have any strong feelings towards X like I do VI, so the music changes mean nothing to me, and I like what it is now.

I forgot what Tidus's face was like before, but it kind of bugs me now.

I also forget if Rikku's bum was in the foreground this much in cutscenes.

I think if I want a vaguely HD experience with FFX I'll just go the PCSX2 route and just fire up my PS2 copy. The new Tidus and Luna sort of creep me out. >_<
