Hasbro reclaims D&D video game license from Atari.

I don't even play D&D and never have, but I adored the paperbacks and I have Ravenloft figures and sourcebooks. In fact, Domains of Dread, for the last two years, has been under my sink as "essential bathroom reading".

I don't think you have to worry. WotC isn't going to release a game based on a product they no longer support.

While it's not much, they put out a Ravenloft board game not too long ago.

I wold love to feel excited about the possibilities, but...

Bioware? I'm not even sure they would be interested anymore in licensed games at this point. And it´s pretty obvious a good part of the talent that made Baldur's Gate 2 possible is not there anymore -including Black Islem, that surely did their part on BG2-.

Obsidian? Potentially super exciting for the talent and mastery of the lore of some of its members, but they are a studio, an actual producer would have to grab the license and then getting Obsidian into it, not that easy.

In any case, what the hell, let's go crazy: Dark Sun/Ravenloft/Planescape made by Obsidian with enough time, and plenty of support. Wohooo!!

I agree, I almost feel like Obsedian should be hired to do story, quests, dialogue, and pre-planning on mechanics, and then production be done by some other studio.

True it has it's issues but this is the most ideal I think given their past work on D&D games. Have OE do the story, etc but let someone else handle the actual programing/development of the game.

I honestly want another Eberron world game. I love that D&D setting.

I really liked the Infinity Engine games, I wish somebody would come back to it (with improved graphics) some days.

My main issue with the more "recent" DnD games (NVM2 and even IwD2) are that they're really to complicated for a beginner to get into. Making a character is the stuff of nightmare for me, there's too many parameter to take in account, and I don't get the multiclass system anymore. I felt it was a lot more straightforward in the earlier games.

But anyway, lets hope whoever gets the license treats it better than Atari...

Really? More straightfoward? Maybe in that you picked a single class, and that was it.

As for me, bring on the complexity! It's D&D. I don't want stuff dumbed down beyond that absolutely needed to make a video game.

Interplay still owns Baldur's Gate and trust me. Trust me, you don't want them to make it happen.

I thought all that went to Atari years ago. Besides, isn't Interplay really strapped for cash?

We're going to get D&D style Transformers, Jem, and ponies?

Count me in!

Hasbro owns Wizards of the Coast which in turn owns D&D.

I wouldn't mind an Eastern company taking a whack at it.

But if I had to choose a western developer I think I would choose a studio with a good pedigree that HASN'T made an RPG before. I want some new blood in there man. Ready At Dawn Studios comes to mind.

Bioware isn't a possibility, so there's no reason to worry on that front.

While FR and Eberron are probably going to be more likely, that Dark Sun is even around now bodes well for a game happening.

Yeah, granted it would call into question keeping their programming/tech staff.

Wow, didn't know GAF was such a 4e fan. I'd like to see them break it up and let any studio make D&D games(and rake up the maximum amount of money they desperately need). There's quite a gold mine hidden in old DnD properties like Spelljammer, Planescape, Dark Sun, etc.

Not really big on 4e, though.
