Have we hit the graphics ceiling this gen?

Yeah, and if they don't sort out the tearing and shitty framerate it all counts for nought.

Right counts for naught..that must be why Shadow of the Colossus beat out God of War and RE4 at the 2006 GDC awards for visuals.

Haha, I think we confused each others terms. You were referring to Screen Space Ambient Occlusion, I was referring to Super Sampled Anti Aliasing (i.e, to further remove the jaggies from the tree's, twigs etc).

I know I was, its what I was always referring to, you can add it to dozens of PC games through Nvidia's drivers these days and often it can have a dramatic effect on the visual impact of a scene.

there's no accounting for taste

I'm guessing a large part of the leeway given was made for the amazing art and visual direction. It merged amazing art and technical wizardry, so I'm assuming many judges just let the frame rate issues off the hook somewhat. But I personally think frame rate issues (severe or erratic one's) should not be left off the hook.

Unless Alan Wake is pushing the system to its limit, featuring technology that was too complex for the hardware, then there is no point in you bringing up Shadow of the Colossus.

Is this how far you have to go to defend Halo/360? Sad

I would have loved to have seen a Kameo 2, just to see how far Rare could have pushed a game like that.

Kameo is 4 years old and still looks absolutely stunning. :(

CoD6 is ugly as fuck, and I can't make myself care. I think I'm done being a graphics whore.

Yes, fuck it. Nothing has amazed me this gen since Kameo.

It was pretty incredible the upgrade they were able to apply to what was essentially an Xbox game considering they only had the final 360 hardware for a few short months.

Every game that drops frames is "pushing the system to its limit". It's a matter of using resources efficiently, not just stressing the hardware.
On the subject of Alan Wake and framerate, though... It used to tear like crazy, but now it's more like one or two frames every five minutes.

I'll wait till DF get their hands on it, thanks. The framerate/tearing in that E3 was so horrific, I'll approach any opinion to the contrary with extreme caution.

it seems to me that the screen tears every time they turn the camera too quickly, judging from what little i've seen on GT. It is improved from before, but hardly"every 5 minutes"

If it tears every time they turn the camera then it will be tearing 40-50% of its output and constantly dropping frames, you're just not noticing the tears. I know with the game infront of me on my screen, I absolutely will.

that's okay, I'll just buy the PC version, it is a Remedy game after all.

...

sigh.

As impressive as Uncharted 2 is, if we don't get more games of that caliber this gen officially sucked.

I hear GT5 looks pretty decent.
I'm at a loss for words. Sarcasm right?

Was about to respond to his 'point' but you just posted pretty much what I was about to in lesser words.
SOTC's tech wasn't "too much for the ps2" it was just new and unoptimized tech, period..so it shipped with the chugs.

I just have to point out, that I got a nice laugh at your logic:

SOTC shipping with bad framerate = Team Icos fault cause the "tech was too good."
Alan Wake demo with frame dips = 360's fault for not being able to run it perfectly.

Your intention is clear as day.. :lol

This is coming from a person who I just saw in the Alan Wake thread posting something to the tune of: "360 owners finally have something to showcase, but only for GOW3 to replace"

Really..?

i really can't air-jerk enough at this.

I hope by next gen they have gotten rid of jaggies and screen tearing, both of those are a higher priority than graphics are to me.
Add to that jagged shadows, dithering, and AF 4x at least.

Behind the curve according to who? Certainly not the gaming media.
Any notable review that had anything 'bad' to say about the games tech praised the games art design in the same sentence, which conclusively led to it getting 9's and such in the visual department. Halo 3 was a strong, consistent game visually, no question.

All Reach is going to do is have tech that further magnifies Bungies art design.
Halo fans will be in heaven..haters will hate.
Ah yes, the "subtle beauty" defense. It wasn't even one of the top 5 best looking games that year.

Uncharted 2 really blew my mind visually. I don't think that games have to look any better in regards of photo-realism, though - we have certainly reached great heights when it comes to a sense of 'realism'.

No... Also as good as Alan Wake looks, saying it looks better than Uncharted 2 does fly with me...there are some interestingly lit night stages in U2, such as in Borneo which look incredible... it will be interesting to see the day stuff in Alan Wake though, because from previous screens and footage I thought it looked quite a bit more impressive at night, mainly because of lighting and weakness hiding

Personally, The Last Guardian and FFXIII are looking pretty immense. Rage I don't find as impressive as many here.... Crysis is already more impressive technically in the open world FPS

I think the only real "ceiling" in this gen is storage capacity. A game like Uncharted, God of War, Alan Wake, and Gears series only look as good as they do based on what is able to be loaded while you're playing. This also results in how long a game ends up being.

Hell, the God of War 3 demo is 2.6 GB because of the amount of 3D assets, animations, sound effects, and AI scripts. This is what helps to push out better graphics - having them in the first place. For instance, if GTAIV had twice the disc space, it could have higher quality assets to load when you get right up in personal with an object. Hell, it could even have a duplicate of the city, but post-nuke or covered in snow.

Of course, it takes time to learn how to develop such LOD systems. As long as developers can get their head around these engines and pumping out several models for the LOD, we'll continue to see better character models, better environments, more effects, and whatever else they figure out to do in front of the screen.

I love Uncharted 2. I've been hooked to the multiplayer since the beta. I played through the single player mode in two days and got a platinum in less than a week. I've been playing multiplayer every day till last week (my backlog was beginning to scare me).
But I still can't stand all the splooging and glushing around its wowfuckawesome ultimate and unbeatable graphicssss!!!!!1!!!
Give me a break.

Can't wait for iRAGE and Crysis 2 as well.
iD & CryTek <3

Talking about all of this eye-candy in one post should be bannable.

You're making my brain melt just thinking of the possibilities. :P

Oh god, I just realized you were one of the guys trolling the leaked Halo Reach cellphone shots as well as Forza 3 in the NPD thread.
Forget I ever responded to you. :lol

Not until a lot more companies begin to use proper animation rather than eye candy.

Am I also the only person who wasn't blown away by the graphics in Uncharted 2?

Completely agree. They were very, very nice, sure, but nothing that really amazed me.

Edit: Four pages, eh?

No, we haven't hit the ceiling. If we have, I'm disappointed.

hell yea insomniac was right.. no one gives a fuck about framerate. People want the bells and whistles, and a compelling gameplay experience. Framerate comes after that, other than games that are competitively played.
....wow. Play some FZero GX, then get back to me.

Nope. And that's because there's no limit to artistic vision.

Maybe someday people will get that.

In the genre of "third person shooting in realistic world with indiana jones elements" the ceiling is probably reached. But that's it.

EDIT: Why did I click this thread... reading all the comments is just... well gamers might just be the most retarded group of people in the history of man.

I want us to hit the ceiling; we'll have 1-2 years of fantastic looking games (See last few years of PS2)

But no.

The ceiling as a few years off.

I was very disappointed with the PC graphics of Far Cry 2, but how is PC gaming relevant to this thread?

Obviously PC graphics hardware continually improves while the consoles are static.

And yes the consoles have hit the ceiling for this gen. I want a new console generation sooner rather than later. This gen is done.

ooh sry i wasnt aware of that :(

i guess i wanted to show how much the game is beautiful ;(

i think the graphics were good but was kinda pale and need more colors

Screw God of War, Metal Gear, SotC and whatever game you might be thinking of. The graphics ceiling on the PS2 was reached by Silent Hill 3. We keep quoting that Douglas Cartland gif to this day for a reason.

Actually I don't know, but if you did believe it at least for a second then you're proving me right anyway.
