Have you ever used an ignore function on any forum at all?

I have an ex-mod on ignore. Then everytime I unhide his posts out of curiosity I remember why I did it and how annoying and eye bleeding the experience was everytime he posted in a Nintendo thread.

Yes, I use and abuse it. I have zero interest on what OT bigots, "defense force" fanboys and gaming trolls have to say at all.

I use it, after I read few mind-numbingly retarded posts I'll put them there so I don't have to suffer anymore.
None here so far however.

Then again the environment of OT and Gaming are really different enough that the poster would be someone you think you'd be friends with in OT but then he becomes the one you want to punch in Gaming.

This is a pretty huge problem for moderation too. It really sucks when someone is a good contributor in certain kind of threads and an asset to the community, but also chooses to enter another kind of threads where they're a jerk and insensitive and unable to interact with others. There are quite a lot of users who get banned in the end who we'd really rather they just used a little discretion to not go in the kind of threads that set them off and stick to the kind of threads where they make a positive difference.

I would never use ignore and don't quite get the purpose of it unless one is being stalked.

What's the point of going to a general purpose forum and looking for dittoheads on a matter?

I have one guy on here, forget his name. He was just completely abrasive and unreasonable in that he would just paste the same inflammatory stuff over and over again no matter what evidence people presented that he was wrong, or misguided. I still see his stuff in quotes and replies but it at least alerts me to probably skip the thread.

It's Amirox (I think that's what you call him) isn't it?

the passive aggression is strong with this one. I don't know how people who have hundreds of posters on ignore can follow threads. I only have one or two people on ignore and it bothers me to no end when they post and I can't see what the discussion is about

Well, so far it has helped me avoiding troll-baiting with the consequent ban for some years already (barring a temp for a controverted OT thread). When I think I'm missing something on a thread I just unhide, and yes, most of the times it reminds me why I love so much the ignore function. Sticking to topics of my interest always helps too, and besides, I only have 59 people on ignore out of them around 12 are banned anyway.

I've found ignore is a handy tool. I have a couple of idiots on there, a few people with avatars I find gross or disturbing, and some of gaming age's well-established trolls/joke characters.

Life is too short, and I expect I'm not missing anything.

When I used ignore, I just wrote a GreaseMonkey extension that actually blocked the posts altogether instead of doing the stupid "LOL U IGNORING THIS GUY. CLICK HERE YOU KNOW YOU WANT TO" foolishness that the board does by default.

In all seriousness, I would legitimately pay money to have the ability to PUT MYSELF on someone else's ignore list.

Hey, you don't like me, I don't like you, problem solved and keeps the community flowing.

Seems like a function that would benefit a forum.

I haven't ever put anyone on 'ignore.'
There are a lot of people who have opinions that piss me off or people who post stuff I don't like, but I know that just because I think they are dumb does not mean that it is impossible for them to ever say anything worthwhile or anything that could be beneficial or helpful to me.

I thought I'd never put someone on ignore, being on a forum because of the discussion and all, but there was someone on the gaming side writing such horrible stupid bs that I couln't take it anymore.

Ignore kinda reminds me of the type of guy who never says a damn thing to your face but you hear he dogs you on the regular when he isn't around you....Of course he also denies that when confronted.

Passive aggressive is a pet peeve of mine...

Never used it as a user, obviously don't now. Never really understood why anyone would use it, do shitty posts really upset people that much?

Honestly, I found the opposite to be true. Quite a few people I respected in Gaming but then when I read these controversial OT threads, these people start acting like fools there.

It's a (minor) thrill of illusionary power. People may not acknowledge it, but they take a tiny bit of pleasure/pride in going "Ha, someone I dislike is now silenced."

Of course they aren't REALLY, but this is the internet, it's fueled by the illusionary idea of our opinions having influence and power.

It isn't about that. I just prefer not having to read posts I don't believe are worth my time.

I wish there was a "reverse" ignore that would increase the size of the person's post and embroider it in gold.

I also wish you could know how many people are ignoring you.

Sometimes I wish more people would use the ignore function, I'm seeing a lot of people who keep responding to "shit posts" and feel the need to point out that they're shit, I worry about them because I think one day they won't be able to maintain their sanity

Hmmm so it all boils down to passive-aggressiveness for most people regarding their attitude for being ignored?

I have no doubt that's true, but be honest, you do take a minute bit of enjoyment out of ignoring someone--even what you just said indicates that, since you are eliminating someone "not worth your time." Pleasure may not be the right word, but a sense of satisfaction would be a better definition.

Imagine you had 10 minutes a day and only 10 minutes a day to use GAF. Wouldn't you like the signal-to-noise ratio to be better, both in terms of the kinds of threads that come to your attention, and in terms of the quality of replies you see in the threads?

I mean, if you're using the site for 3 hours a day, it's a little less crucial, because quantity is way more important than quality.

Now realize that any web site basically creates a behavioural loop. Check thread -> go to another thread -> wonder if anyone followed up on that original thread -> go back -> etc. So in a sense, whether there's 10 minutes of stuff to read or 3 hours of stuff to read, as long as you have the time, you could get drawn into wasting it. Trimming the fat helps you get what you're looking for off the site and hopefully get offline.

As a moderator my usage profile is obviously very different because there's an element of needing to be a glutton for punishment just to keep things cleaned up.

Didn't someone confirm not too long ago that the admins/mods can see who is the most ignored people?

I'd love to see that list, although realistically understand why sharing it wouldn't be kosher.

That should be freely available information. Slap it right next to their username every time they make a post. If they're on a lot of ignore lists, then maybe they'll get the hint that they're kind of a crappy poster and they should post better. And even if they don't get that hint, then it'll let other posters know that this guy is on a lot of ignore lists, so you probably shouldn't give his posts much attention.

I don't think so. I don't even think about it that much. If there is someone consistently making bad posts, or twisting words and causing conflicts, or generally just being an ass, I will ignore them and forget about it. I don't think I've ever felt satisfaction from that, but maybe a kind of mild relief, like when a bird finally stops singing when you are trying to sleep in.

It's a matter of principle spite for me: you cross that line, I don't give a shit about anything else you ever have to say (talking about the sort of things Stumpokapow listed, for instance).

I ignored someone YEARS ago for reasons I can no longer remember and still see the ignore message once and a while. I should probably just remove it.

I have a few people on ignore here. I think they are all users who always put a "signature" at the end of their posts.

Definitely. When I read something that is incredibly ridiculous, in my view, I very much enjoy not having to subject my brain to that ever again.

This is precisely why I use ignore. I have relatively busy life. While I still have the time to post on GAF, I'd rather not waste too much time on arguments with posters who are vile. Especially not if such argument causes me to be late to work, boxing/Japanese class or social gathering.

And this is also a very interesting learning tool for every poster here: we should always remember that the people who we would so much label as "trolls", "derailers", "idiots" might only show one tiny fraction of their preferences and faces to us, and are (usually) actually way, waaaay nicer than it looks like based on just one thread.

Well, relief also works as the positive reaction I refer to, then.

I use it a lot, mostly as a warning system for myself that if I read a certain post it's probably going to be moronic and I should treat it as such. That way I know not to bother replying to that person.
