Have you gotten into podcasts?

I'm not 60 years old so yeah.

(would add to my snarky reply but since typing on a tablet sucks I'll just say Fighting in the War Room is the best movie podcast)

I'm 52 and have been listening to podcasts since the inception of the medium you ageist bastard.
:)

They are such a huge boon to anyone that has to commute. SO much quality content out there, all for free. They are amazing.

Pocket Casts represent!

I have to say, podcasts have improved my work so much that I might have quit without them. Currently I'm listening to:

The Dollop - probably the best comedy/American History podcast

Hardcore History - fantastic for learning and whittling away the hours

Super Best Friendcast - because those guys are super fun to listen to

My Favorite Murder - because I have a morbid sense of humor

On The Tropes - TvTropes podcast made by the website

Prairie Home Companion - because I grew up with this amazing show on NPR

I'll probably delve into a few more thanks to this thread!

I got into podcasts in a big way back around Serial, but I've let some of them slide since. These days I listen to:

-Drunks and Dragons, a super funny real play DnD podcast
-Undisclosed
-Start Up
-The Cracked Podcast (although I hate the host, so I tend to mainly listen to the live episodes where he doesn't talk as much and there's more emphasis on comedy)
-The Canon, a really excellent show where two film critics argue in depth on which films belong in the canon of great movies. It's super entertaining and is spurring me to go watch a bunch of classic movies I haven't seen before, just so I can hear them talk about them.
-The West Wing Weekly is a pretty good way to relive one of my favorite shows
-Yer a Wizard Harry is a pretty good way to relive one of my favorite book series
-The Slate Political Gabfest is a fun weekly take on politics

I'd also recommend Serial (of course), Criminal, Maltin on Movies, Mystery Show, Tanis (still great episode to episode, even I think the show needs better long-form storytelling), Dan Carlin's shows, and the Overthinking It podcast.

Since getting into podcasts I've actually started my own, Life in the Kraken, discussing pop culture. We've done almost 25 episodes so far and it's super, super fun. If you've got a passion and a friend or two who you enjoy talking to about it, I highly recommend giving this a shot--it's a neat hobby that doesn't cost a lot of time or effort and can be very rewarding.

Why hasn't the podcast evolved at all? Here we are 12-13 years later and it's basically the same technology that it always was.

Why can't episodes have timestamps and chapter stops? Why can't they have a visual component? If the participants are discussing something that would be helpful to see, why can't they pop up a thumbnail of it on my phone screen to look at? If the participants are discussing a particular article, video, or website, why can't I click on a URL embedded in the audio file and go to that site/video/article?

It's a shame that the format hasn't really been anything more than bulk audio on demand. At this point everyone listening almost undoubtedly has a touchscreen phone, GPS, and internet connection. Those things really ought to be utilized in some fasion.

iTunes and iOS used to support enhanced podcasts which were m4a files that displayed images and links at set timestamps, but apparently Apple dropped support for them.

They're not serious.
Unless you think Russian Spetsnaz Black Ops Dolphins are out to kill you.

Which they could be.
Seriously though, give it another listen.
I listened to an episode of them buying uncritically into stupid ghost shit. Did not at all sound joking to me.

I listen to the WOR and WOL wrestling podcasts every episode generally and every night I listen to theHamish and Andy podcast to sleep. Harmontown was cool for a bit but they're too long.

Got into them to have something to listen to while playing Euro Truck Simulator 2. Also listen to them while playing American Truck Simulator and Rocket League. Started with Dan Carlin's Hardcore History. Moved onto The Cracked Podcast, Mysterious Universe, Talking Simpsons, Thirty Twenty Ten, among others I've started and stopped listening to. I'll occasionally listen to Laser Time and any other random podcast if there's an interesting topic.
Talking Simpsons is the podcast I look forward to the most every week.

The Cracked Podcast

IGN's Nintendo Voice Chat

Recently: The WAN Show (LinusTechTips)

Previously:

Giant Bombcast - I just don't have time to listen to this anymore...

GFW Radio/1 Up Yours and Sports game guys sports anomaly were my jam..
I just lost track or was too disheartened after GFW stuff was over..It all seemed like an empty shell of what it was. Should probably look into whats happening these days..

I've been a fan since 2005 and have gone through many podcasts. I started with gaming, tech, and sports then branched to other genres. Looking at my list, the ones I've been listening to the longest would be Uhh Yeah Dude followed by Bombcast. Both happen to make me laugh more than any other podcasts.

I miss 1UP Yours, I miss Ryen Rusillo on the old ESPN NBA podcast (not into his new show) and I miss Buzz Out Loud.

Yes, only a few days ago in fact. One of my professors assigned the first episode of The Black Tapes as required listening for our class, and I ended up getting hooked and listening to the whole series. I've checked out a couple of episodes of gaming podcasts over the years, but nothing that really kept me listening. Suffice it to say, I'm a lot more interested in the medium now.

If you liked The Black Tapes, you'll probably want to hop over to this thread

And what class was that? I want to take that class :p

I'll definitely check out that thread, thanks! Based on the OP alone, there's a ton of good stuff for me to dig into. And the class is called Performance Studies! The Black Tapes is apparently only the first of a number of podcasts we'll be introduced to during the course, so I've got plenty of listening to look forward to.

I only sort of jumped onto the bandwagon as of this weekend with podcasts.

Not entirely, i been listening to Wittertainment for years and years, and the Eurogamer and Ricky Gervais podcasts as well, but i just felt the need to look for more over the weekend. Now got a pretty extensive list.

Also listening to a lot more radio as well now, there isn't much of the programming i enjoy on tv any more and podcasts feed the thirst for sure.

So will read through the thread again and check out the mentioned podcasts out over time ( Eh, almost a year behind with Wittertainment)

So far, subscribed to Infinite Monkey Cage, This American Life, Freakonomics, Joe Rogan and Radiolab.

Hope to discover some gems in time!

I think I started with the 1UP Show(and it's various spin offs), so maybe 2005-6? This American Life, Word Nerds(have to see if that's still around...) and Stuff You Should Know were ones I listened to a lot. I also listened to LOADS of gaming ones, specifically MMO-focused ones as that was what I was obsessed with back then.

Now I don't have a lot of gaming ones I follow anymore. Podquisition, and recently Kinda Funny(though I tend to watch that because Tim is cute!).

I started with the amazing "We're Alive" podcast, and have been listening to diverse podcasts since then:

- The Leviathan Chronicles (never ended the story, unfortunatelly ... :| )
- Wormwood (still haven't finish it)
- Serial (I think i prefered the first season though)
- PS I Love You XOXO
- The Truth (but not as much as the above)
- The Lighthouse Painting (short but amazing)
- Welcome to Night Vale

Need to find more, so this thread is a god send.

I wish I has enough time in the week to listen to all the amazing podcasts that get put out. I mostly listen to comedy stuff and even then there's like 10-15 shows I want to keep up with! My every week listens are:

Hollywood Handbook - This is "The insiders guide to kicking butt and dropping names in the red carpet lined back hallways of this industry we call showbiz". It's by far the funniest show I listen too, a silly but smart satire of podcasts and interviews with self-serious celebrities that's evolved into one of the most cutting edge comedy outlets around. It's steeped in so many levels of irony that it can be hard to get into but once you do you'll wonder how you lived without it.

Gianbombcast - the best video game podcast around.

Doughboys - recently got into this one and really like it, so much so that I've been binging every episode. It's a show about chain restaurants that's carried by the dynamic relationship between the two very funny co-hosts. Funnily enough, the show is kind of like comfort food, reliably putting me in a good mood.

Improv4Humans - Basically a free UCB improv show with the best improvisers LA has to offer every week. It's insane that this isn't a bigger show, it's always top-notch stuff.

The Worst Idea of All Time - Two NZ comedians watch the same terrible movie (Grown Ups 2, Sex and the city 2 )every week for a year and go slowly insane.

My more sporadic listens are:

Comedy Bang Bang! - 400 episodes strong and still one of the best podcasts out there. I mainly listen when there's a guest I like now, but it's always a decent to great show.

Hello from the Magic Tavern - another Improv show but this time with a fantasy setting.
It plays with a lot of tropes of the genre in a very funny way.

GiantBeastcast - spinoff of the giantbombcast. There's often some great in depth videogame discussion

Beautiful/Anonymous - Chris Gethard has an hour long conversation with a random caller each week in which he can't hang up. At it's best it delves into lives or cultures that are completely alien to me and deals with them with incredible warmth and empathy. It's a little hit and miss but when it hits it can be a transcendent experience.

Don't Get me Started - celebrities (mostly LA comedians) come on and talk about something they're very passionate about. It can be anything from Survivor to JFK to Kanye West.

The Best Show - a recent pickup for me and one that, if it was a bit shorter I'd probably listen too every week. This is almost a traditional radio show with guests and call-ins but host Tom Scharpling is so funny he manages to make it into something very special.

With Special Guest Lauren Lapkus - Lapkus is a fantastic improviser and here she showcases her talent. The guest hosts the show each week, with Lauren playing a different character each time. It's very guest-dependent but when there's a good guest and they click with Lauren it can be hilarious.

There's probably a bunch more shows I could name but that'll do for now. It's a really exciting medium and is without a doubt one of the best outlets for comedy right now.

Yes, and they've quickly become one of my favorite mediums.

Lately I have been re-listening to my favorite one: The Adventure Zone

"But first, let's talk about Squarespace Dot Com. "

Not only do I listen to podcasts and audible -

... But I also turn videos I love into mp3s. For instance, I converted my entire DVD set of Seinfeld to audio and listen to it as an audio book when I go to sleep. Since I've already seen what's happening it's a great way to wind down while doing little chores around my apartment and revisiting old episodes.

I also love to listen to something while doing other stuff - it makes chores so much more enjoyable! Sometimes I even convert long articles to audio via text to speech, though it can be a bit grating to listen to (though it has gotten much better over the years).

Growing up german meant that I had a ton of audio books on cassette as a kid, those audio shows were really biggest here, even TV-to-audio conversions like The Simpsons or Alf, with a weird female voice explaining stuff you couldn't see.

Got into podcasts in '09 when I finally escaped retail and started working in an office.

Most of my favorites have already been mentioned, so I'll recommend AlphaBeatical and Star Wars Minute.

These podcasts are by the same guys. One is a podcast that goes song by song alphabetically through The Beatles' catalog, one is a podcast that slices up each Star Wars movie into 60-second chunks and they discuss it.

Both are super funny and informative.

I listen to a few podcasts already listed, but wanted to add two that I didn't see or missed being listed.

Shut Up & Sit Down is a board gaming podcast, I definitely prefer some episodes over others, but they cover new and upcoming board games and usually don't hold back criticisms of games they've played.

Politically Re-Active is solid as well, commenting on current state of politics and race issues with some comedic delivery thrown in

I'm half joking, but one of the reasons I like podcasts is because I'm not listening to people, or even the kind of people, I'd see in TV and movies. There are tons of podcasts that are talking about things that no one would ever make a TV show or movie or even a radio show about, from people who could never become celebrities. The only podcast I listen to that has celebrities on it is Comedy Bang Bang, and usually the bigger the celebrity they get, the worse the episode is.

.

Yeah, I have some TV shows that I bought digitally from Amazon that I listen to on my iPod at work or while driving. It's surprisingly entertaining just to hear the audio (for comedies at least.)

Absolute musts:
- My dad wrote a porno
- Last podcast on the left.

Amazing highlights:
- The adventure zone
- Hello from the magic tavern
- Risk
- 2 Dope Queens

I only listen to podcast now in my car, completely replaced the bloated FM Radio (rehashing the same topics over and over).

Can someone recommend any good 'convo' podcasts?

As much as I love This American Life or RadioLab, I kind of like having stuff justr in the background when I'm cooking or doing something around the house. Tomorrow Podcast with Josh Topolsky or Gruber's podcast.

Not sure if it's been mentioned but I loooove Imaginary Worlds. I think it fits right into Neogafs tastes. Scifi/fantasy topics.

Started with 1UP Yours, transitioned to Weekend Confirmed and finally settled with Giant Bombcast and Beastcast. I've checked out a few episodes of This American Life, brief stints with 8-4 Play and Tested.com's podcast, the entire run of A Life Well Wasted and a few episodes of Player One.

I've recently added ESPN FC Podcast to my rotation for soccer news and discussion but it's one of the poorly produced podcasts I've ever heard. The personalities keep me coming back though.
