Heavenly Sword Playstation 3 Fact Sheet

god of war was combo-based, heavenly sword doesn't really have any noticeable combos, and it doesn't look like its going to have (m)any considering there's no ironic marketing bulletpoint for it

Meh, all the claims for intelligent AI, especially those featured in bullet points, should be seen with great suspicion. They've failed to happen so many times in the past, especially with ambitious PC games.

Unless there's some sort of breakthrough in AI programming, intelligent AI usually means some clever rule based behavior than the human player will eventually figure out and adapt to.

It can never be wielded by a mortal without it draining their life-force, killing them within hours

OMG The game is gonna last 6 hours AM COMFIRMED!!!

Seriously though. This is one of my most anticipated PS3 games. Looks HOT!

IT should be more complex simply because of the three stances.

well from the demo it wasn't too complex -- it was just a lot of fun to weive in and out of the three stances with relative ease and seamless transitions.

The two styles of game are only similar in that you're beating people up. I wonder if you'll have as much control over the main character while fighting 4 dozen enemies as you do while you're fighting one.

I don't see why not, in the arena based combat you're relying more on your swords and objects you pick up off enemies and off the ground, in the squad based combat you're going to have projectile weapons to help you combat (like in the trailer when she takes that gun and blows through a large portion of the field).

I'm thinking each stance will do different things. In the gameplay demonstrations, they even showed off what looked to be a counter system within the game. It could possibly work like Royal Guard in DMC3. In regards to combos, they weren't especially showcased in any of the gameplay vids that I saw but the potential was there.

This is what NT said about the combat in general

Sorry guys, a lot of the q's cannot be answered just yet. You can work out a lot of stuff from the videos. Just remember that the game is a WIP and there are lots of features still to come.

There are 3 different combat styles (your good at everything style, range style and heavy style) all of which can be changed on the fly for combos. I didn't see many people even trying that in the E3 demo.

oh, there was a "special" button (the o)..is that what you're talking about?

sure, potential is there, and i'd probably surprised if they didn't at least include some sort of combo stuff, but the focus is probably not going to be as heavily on combos as it is in GoW.

I didn't see many people even trying that in the E3 demo.

well, most people suck at playing a game without really reading the instructions. The people i watched before me rarely even went into different styles at all, they had to get help from one of the Sony reps pointing it out to them.

but i know i'm gonna play it that way :D

they still had the L1/R1 buttons to assign something to.

The three stances are for crowd-clearing, standard attacks, and slow power attacks. Very easy to switch between them, and the main thing about the game that made it feel unique. Countering is pretty much like Royal Guard, block and wait for the right moment. Combos don't seem the focus as much as style, again a bit like DMC where you need to vary your moves to keep your style meter going, though in this game it's also going to essentially be your life meter. I wasn't too fond of the throwing mechanic since I could never seem to hit a damn thing with it, and the timed button press moments a la Shenmue are getting old, but it was still great fun and best PS3 game at the show.

IIRC L1/R1 changed stances for you (like a shift key - you would keep the button held down for as long as you wanted to be in that stance)...

I started to try combos but the model who played ahead of me monopolized the game and I only got to play for about 45 seconds before the show ended and they killed the power to the monitors :(

maybe it was the other pair then.

I know that one pair of shoulder buttons weren't assigned yet.

sucks you played for less than a minute though

This was one of the shots in the Edge preview that I hadn't seen released on the web - one that perhaps impressed me most. This one is rendered out at 1080p, but resolution asides the Edge preview's caption labels it as in-game, and you can see some aliasing etc if you look closely enough.

edit - here's a 1280x720 version for the link lazy ;)

Ya, it's very impressive. One of the other screens in the Edge preview compares the original art to the game environment, saying "Perhaps in a few short years of next-gen development such seamless transition from concept art (inset) to in-game visuals will be expected, but for now it's a remarkable feat". The scene in question is another screen that hasn't been released on the web, it's actually less impressive than the one above IMO if only because of the smaller scale (features a snow-covered forest/garden) - but it is really beautiful. Stuff like this makes me impatient to see more of the game :p The arena demo at E3 seems like a tiny taster.

Speaking of that, one of the NT people mentioned they're looking to having a demo ready around launch (probably the E3 demo).

For...? I can't think of any shows in and around Nov?

Thanks for the question noUse4sp@ce. We hear what you are saying... we're still planning when/if we'll be producing any demos pre-launch, so bear with us!

Screen looks awesome btw.

Thank you Striek. I won't be teased with the possibility of a downloadable demo this year! :p One can hope and pray though..

They claim that this game will combat to new heights. That is quite an ambitious statement for a new action game on the block.

I am very much looking forward to this amazing action game.

Andy Serkis talks a little about the game..

Serkis became involved by chance. His mortgage advisor is the brother of the boss of Ninja Theory, Tameem Antoniades.

When Antoniades found out about his brother's celebrity client, he asked him to pass on a trailer for the game. Once Serkis saw it, he wanted in.

"We are aiming to bring the highest level of layered, truthful and emotionally engaging performance into Heavenly Sword," said the actor.
