Heavily criticized games that you really enjoy

I felt in planet fuck when Lords of Shadow 2 began recieving 4 and 5's. The very definition of a 7 game for me, and as a fan that would increase.

DmC - I definitely prefer the original series to this game (with the exception of DMC2, I try to forget that exists), but I really enjoyed DmC. The combat was fluid and fun, and I had a blast playing it. DMC3 and 4 definitely are much better games in the combat department, but I still find myself putting in DmC to just play a little Bloody Palace occasionally.

Brutal Legend.

Screw the haters, I loved the multiplayer to bits. It's complicated in its own way, but once you get to grips with all the spells, double-teams, action-combat and upgrades (Rock Crusher ftw), it's one of my favorite multiplayer games of last gen. The strategy stuff admittedly wasn't much fun during the campaign, but I still loved that too.

Nothing beats building your army while amazing metal blasts out of your stage.

Alpha Protocol.

I LOVE this game, it's really the sort of game that I'd try to make if I were a dev. It's kind of clunky in some regards but it's in my top 5 from last gen.

Had a lot of fun with it online and with friends.

Ah yes. I wouldn't hesitate to buy a PS4 port if there were one.

I enjoyed FFXIII and Killzone:Shadowfall, Infamous: Second Son, and Ryse. It seems like there doesn't seem to be alot of love for those titles here on GAF.

I've been playing Postal 2, which got some pretty horrible reviews upon release, and I actually kinda like it. Once you actually play it, you notice that it actually encourages creative, nonlinear gameplay.

Grand Theft Auto IV. I can't help but chuckle whenever someone tries to mention it in any conversation about "terrible" games.

GAF Criticized Games:

-L.A. Noire; loved the story and role-playing a detective
-Max Payne 3; irritating cutscenes but great gameplay

Critically Panned:

-Enslaved; story was good, controls not so much
-Knack; enjoyed playing this with my daughter

I really liked Resident Evil 6

Totally having the time of my life playing co-op with my boyfriend. It's easy to see where it's bad (and Leon's chapter, a.k.a. his REALLY bad day of explosions and every he meets NPC dying) is too fun/ny to hate.

Probably the biggest one for me was ffxiii. I beat that game 3 times, and I loved it. I hated xiii-2 though, and I haven't touched LR.

Also, I like ME3 and Arkham Origins (gameplay was meh,but it was the best story in the series so far)

Star Ocean 4: the last hope

my favourite game of the last gen... I know that it has some flaws, but it was a glourious 16/32 bit game with modern technology. Great atmosphere, great settings, great exploration, excellent bs

Maybe not my favorite of the gen but I agree with the sentiment, some of the flaws and flack it gets for some things are true to some extent but I really liked it anyway and the things you mentioned about it.

FFVIII was a really good choice for this thread treated the way it is, such a good game (including the card game minigame) and setting, including a decent amount of the story, and ofcourse the music.

Also:
FFXIII (though I did really miss having some towns)
Heavenly Sword
Remember Me
Batman Arkham Origins
Enslaved
White Knight Chronicles 2
Knack (surprisingly hard too as many have mentioned)
Neptunia Series
MGS4
Uncharted 3 (this game was so good even if not quite at 2's level, can't believe we kind of have to include it due to the vocal hate it got)
Xenosaga series (2 was the worst of the three, but I love this series and all the Xeno games and never agreed with the complaints about 1 since I loved the lengthy story/cutscenes of that game since that's one of my favorite parts of the Xeno team's games going back to Xenogears)

I'm probably missing a bunch including other choices in this thread.

I really like Knack. Yeah, it was repetitive, the upgrade system was a mess, and it would have been much improved at half the length, but I had fun with the game on hard mode.

Wild Arms XF, Siren, and Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter are all games that I consider to be some of the finest examples of their respective genres and they all got mediocre review scores.

Loved the hell out of Wild Arms XF if that's gotten some hate/bad reviews, one of my favorite SRPGs on the system along with Jeanne d'Arc, I also love that series in general, 3, 5, and 1 are my favorites, I wish they'd make a WA6 on PS4. Dragon Quarter was quite good too. Haven't played Siren.

Edit: Ooh, Alice: Madness Returns, I second that if that's been getting a lot of hate, loved it.
And joining in on Deadpool, it was quite fun and entertaining.

WET - this game was so much fun, but I rarely find anyone who liked it.

Blades of Time - maybe I had really low expectations but I enjoyed it.

Lost Planet 2 I Enjoyed alot the mission where needed 3 people to rotate and fire a cannon on the train was a fantastic set piece
DmC I never could get into a character action games but I really liked this one
AvP:2010 This game was miles beyond Aliens:CM in terms of quality hope Rebellion brings us a next gen AvP

It didn't even get bad reviews, but it's easy to hate on it because it's not a freaking 64 / TTYD clone. Because it's not a RPG. To me? It was my GOTY 2012 and still my favorite 3DS game, I think. Awesome puzzle-adventure game with amazing music. Also, at least in Japan it sold better than any other Paper Mario game before it, so I'm looking forward to both more games like this, and more whining from some people.

The entire EX series. What's with the hate? I found them really fun, the new characters were great and they still have the best music in the series.

White Knight Chronicles 1 and 2

Both games were heavily panned by critics and the majority of the rpg fanbase.

Yet, they were my most played games of last generation with a combined total game time of over 2500 hours.

The games were often ridiculed because of the sub standard single player component and I have to agree. From a single player design, the fact that you had to create this mute avatar which served no purpose to the story campaign was just a horrible decision.

Once I completed single player story however, the online multiplayer component changed everything for me. The game went from an absolute chore to a highly addictive and enjoyable online rpg.

It's a pity that Level 5 had to put such a crappier barrier (story mode) to the player before they can access the online component and is probably the reason why the games get easily dismissed.

I would be so happy if Sony comissions Level 5 to do a special version of WKC2 with just the online component for PS4, but I doubt Sony would ever want to revisit the IP ever again.

Tales of the Abyss

Loved the group dynamic, the length of story (so much development in the world itself), the growth of the characters (Luke for example), and the craziness of the battles (Mystics artes everywhere).

Majority of Tales fan shit on this game due to Luke at the beginning, or they tire of the revisiting of certain towns. I enjoyed revisiting towns later in the game. It gave perspective and usage of the town rather than a stop gap between dungeons and plot points.

Skyward Sword. I loved it and is in my top 5 Zelda games now. The combat, dungeons, and story were all spectacular.

It certainly has some issues, but it's much better than what people make it out to be.

I also loved Bioshock Infinite and it's my favorite in the series. I don't get why it seems to have gathered so much hate around here. Yet again, it certainly has problems, but for me the good outweighs the bad.

I agree with everything in this post. I enjoyed both Skyward Sword and Bioshock Infinite. In fact, BI was my GOTY for 2013.

Star Ocean 3 and 4.

I am big time tri-Ace fanboy, which generally owns almost every single NTSC US released game they developed.

Star Ocean Second Story, Valkyrie Profile (both the original PSX release in pristine condition) and the PSP re-release as VP: Lenneth, Star Ocean 3, Radiata Stories, Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria, VP: Covent of the Plume, Resonance of Fate, and the PSP remakes of Star Ocean 1 (First Departure), and 2 (Second Evolution).

The only game I don't own of their entire English released line up is Infinite Undiscovery, and the only reason is because I don't own a 360.

I loved Sticker Star. My only other Paper Mario game was the N64 original, so I wasn't particularly married to what a PM game should be. I did have some trouble adjusting to it at first but once I read that the best way to approach the game is barreling through fights as quickly as possible, the entire thing clicked for me. Also yes, the music is amazing.

Project X Zone. I know it's a lame story but damn I have fun playing it.

Also the little known game Port Royale 3 has a score in the 50s on Metacritc but I enjoy it. Once you get past the steep learning curve, the game is quite addicting.

I really, really liked Too Human. I'm still kind of bummed that the sequels won't get made.

I also liked Heavy Rain a lot, despite the nonsensical plot holes.

Remember Me. Ummmm the art direction is just jaw dropping and I loved the main character Nihlin. Going by that recent GAF Remember Me thread, it seemed like most people loved the look but not the controls nor the gameplay. I had no problems with any of it. I would buy a next gen port in a heart beat, although now that the studio is gone there's very little chance of that. A real underrated gem IMO.

I've enjoyed pretty much everything listed in this thread, some really good, albeit flawed games that quickly became some of my favorites.

More recently, I borrowed Ryse from a buddy of mine and it's surprisingly solid. People were shitting on it when they first showed it off but but I've been enjoying it quite a bit.

Hitman: Absolution
Absolution is a great game imho, most people who say it sucks are the so called "hardcore Hitman fans".
It got amazing graphics, animations and is very well done regarding the game mechanics.
Playing the earlier ones in the series after Absolution makes them feel so old and clunky it's not just that fun anymore.

Of course it has it problems, like mixing instinct with the quit bad disguise system and also the point system.

hated by Gaf:

the two DS Zeldas

Skyward Sword

Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks are awesome games. i loved the stylus mechanics, only had some issues at first with the rolling command. Some of the dungeons are truly great, with amazing boss battles, sidequests and minigames are hella fun, graphics are great, music is good as well. The multilayered central tower is indeed repetitive, but its annoyance was so blown out of proportion, you could blitz through it in no time as you got better gear...a minor nuisance for two fantastic portable games

I find Skyward Sword's criticism truly appalling. Game goes the extra furlong to refresh the formula in so many ways by removing a giant overworld full of nothing like the one in TP and putting each area inside a densely packed, smaller outer perimeter that is a dungeon in itself. Plus, these areas become increasingly bigger as you progress, so there's still a great sense of scale and adventurous feeling. It's a fantastic choice that works amazingly well. Plus, the dungeons are almost all top tier, graphics are great, music is seriously mindblowing, and the motion controls always worked perfectly: every fight and every boss felt so refreshing and strategic thanks to them, not a single time I thought "this would have worked better with regular controls". Loved them so much I'm kinda sad to see them going away with the next Zelda, along with the brilliant concentric areas, but hey, Zelda U looks fabulous so not complaining. Still, it blows my mind people hate SS because in my opinion it was the GOTG

also this. Game is not perfect, but damn if it wasn't fun

I definitely held off picking it up due to the outcry against it but when I finally did, I absolutely loved it for what it was. It may have been a mistake branding it with the Paper Mario brand due to the pedigree, but I really loved the quasi old-school adventure game with RPG elements.

I need to go beat that final boss now that I think about it.

Recently I'd say Ryse. It wasn't anything revolutionary but it was a solid action game with a solid story and some very pretty graphics. Plus I played the arena mode a lot. IMO that game gets a lot more hate than it deserves.

Basically summarizes my feelings to a tee!

Really enjoyed Ryse and the news
Last month of the canned sequel project totally sucks.

RuneScape

Possibly the most hated game of all time

Yes, I spent way too much time on it (Over 6,000) but I had a blast, that said, I can totally see where the criticism of the game comes from, for the most part it really was just a huge grind.

But damn, I don't know what it is about the game, I actually had to fight with myself to not re-buy membership to play the new Classic Mode.

Just gonna quote myself

The bionic commando reboot gets so much shit, but I honestly believe it stems from poor sales due to lack of marketing push coupled with a very steep difficulty curve, punctuated with a meme-worthy twist at the end of the game (
olol wife arm
).

And I'm not going to excuse all that or say that it should have been a success. BUT, despite all that, once you got a hang of the swinging mechanics, my god the game was amazing (IMO of course). The sense of freedom was incredible. It was awesome swinging around these huge environments, popping baddies with your gun. That the game didn't really attempt to make the swinging mechanic intuitive was a double edged sword - so many people would drop the game before learning the ins and outs of it (and for good reason), but it also meant the reward you felt from pulling off insane aerobatic moves was that much greater because you actually did it all yourself, it wasn't a canned animation.

Despite the hate that game gets, playing through it all in one sitting remains one of my favorite gaming memories of last gen.

I often see L.A. Noire criticized but I really enjoyed it. There were some things about the gameplay that were just stupid, but I loved every minute of it regardless.

Killzone: Shadowfall. I found it refreshingly challenging compared to other console first-person shooters I've played, the story was good-not-great, the multiplayer had depth without requiring one to grind for it, and it was gorgeous.
