Heavily hyped/marketed games from last decade that are now forgotten

I like how there are like three legitimate answers in this thread. Someone post Shenmue next.

Yup I remember all the marketing for this game. Amazing it only came out four years ago.

came to post brute force, might as well throw this one on the pile.

I don't know, maybe Perfect Dark Zero?

...and...

  • Goldeneye Rogue Agent
  • Bionic Commando from Grin
  • Wii Music
  • Tomb Raider Underworld
  • Ninja Gaiden II
  • The Last Remnant (was hyped because it was Square-Enix's first current-gen JRPG, Tri-Ace ones don't count)
  • Conan (console game)
  • Lost Planet 2 (Almost forgotten :P)
  • Wolfenstein
  • Red Steel
  • Lair
  • Mercenaries 2
  • Lord of the Rings Conquest
  • Godfather II
  • Sonic Chronicles The Dark Brotherhood (Because it was by BioWare)

Those come to mind, I guess.

Oh and Mortal Kombat VS DC

Wario Land: Shake It!, great game that was heavily marketed (remember that Youtube page?), after it came out I rarely heard anyone else talk about it ever again.

Space Channel 5 is the one game of the decade that I can remember getting hyped to heavens in magazines but going nowhere after initial release, but it's not really forgotten.

Advent Rising was the first to come to mind. Then this..

I remember going to the Shadowrun official forums to troll them for making it a FPS, while employees would desperately try to damage control with "OH IT'LL BE FUN, YOU'LL SEE!" Then it finally came out, and sucked, and bombed, and they all got fired.

And then, for whatever reason, NBC made a miniseries or a made-for-TV XIII movie.

They made it because XIII is actually a really popular comic book series in some parts of the world.

It was fun, but rough around the edges and lacked content. Also, many people never really gave it a chance.

Anyway, my contribution:

I can never forget Hellgate while I post on GAF because of that dude with the "Hellgate is shit" tag. Every time I see it I'm like "I KNOW! ENOUGH ALREADY!"

shenmue

but i still remember my disappointment. FREE my ass, ultra-clichè characters and story even for the time. But it was by Yu Suzuki and released on much-loved console, so..

luckily this day is remembered only by dreamcast fans.

I don't see how this is forgotten, unless you're referring to the annoyances in the game.

But it's the most memorable JRPG for the Cube.

Now that sequel, Dawn of the New World, I guess it's fair to say that was forgettable.

i still remember how this was heralded as the MGS of sega Dreamcast

I loved this game, though. The character design, the humor, the balance betwen stealth and action... How was the sequel by the way ?

Anyway, I'm sure most of you have heard about this game at one time and forgotten it :

I don't know how it turned out either. I think it has its fans.

Killzone 2
This troll gets 4/10. 3 points for listing a game that is FAR from forgotten, and one point for pitiful presentation. C'mon man. At least use a shitty meme if you're going to do this.

I'd like to add nearly every id software game post Quake 3 Arena...

Doom 3

Quake 4

Enemy Territory - Quake Wars

Dear god, I had so high expectations for all of them and none where fulfilled :(

...and I bet it'll be the same for Rage

Spore

It was hyped as being the most amazing thing since the invention of blowjobs, and then it came out to a lukewarm reception, and people just stopped caring about it fairly quickly.

I'd say Primal. It was heavily marketed in Europe at least and it just took me one fucking hour to remember its name (and not post "that game with the girl").

I disagree with Daikatana and Enter the Matrix, both are infamous. Daikatana is remembered for Romero's attitude and its overall failure. Enter the Matrix has been (or was at least) used for years as the archetype of sales != quality.

I'm not into MMORPGs but hasn't there been a couple of next big things announced that eventually fizzled on release?

I also love how this thread is turning into the token "let's troll popular games" thread of the week.

Viva Pinata.

Don't get me wrong, I liked the game - but it was meant to be Microsoft's Pokemon, with a TV series and advertising directed at kids. Then it came out, and no-one really bothered with it.

Ugh, so many terrible answers in this thread.

Doom 3 is the only game you listed there that was made by id.

Like, the boxarts you posted even state that there is an id game, a raven game and a splash damage game.

I should have betted that someone jumps at this fact...

It doesn't make them less an id game + id software was co producing them
