Heavy Rain - A Neogaf Official Thread on the Gaming Forum

Man the ambiguity over the controls in some major scenes is kinda pissing me off. First I
accidentally shot that jesus guy thinking the shaky R1 was gonna stabilize my gun (that one might be my bad). Then I accidentally let Lauren drown when I chose to move over cause I thought it was gonna move me closer to her. I wanted to save her :(

This is my main gripe with the game. I'm supposed to BE these characters so it would have been great if i knew what I was doing when prompted. I never felt I was making a decision, but more like I was experimenting and performing whichever prompt came up.

I hated searching wardrobes only to try and search one later on to have my character lean against it casually.... wtf!? Or wondering which option did what when
trapped underwater with Lauren
. I wouldn't have minded words on the screen like "Check backpack?" when i reached an object so I would know what i was doing instead of guessing.

Anyway, I made it up to chapter 3. The story is really intriguing, I'm curious to see who is the origami killer in the end. I got one question though,
how did Madison know where Ethan was during the trial where you had to cut off your finger?

You'll find that out later.

Also, are all the cut-scenes rendered in real-time? I got the impression that some scenes look significantly better than others.

I think so. But I do think different teams works on different scenes. It seems some teams are more competent than others.

Damn... I still better be able to get the best ending. Damn it.

Do not reset. I think you'd get more satisfaction during your first playthrough playing with all of your mistakes. Yes, even if it means that some of your characters are dead.

Happy to say i went out and dropped $65 (w/tax) on a copy of this game. Been looking forward to it since announcement. Demo and solid reviews/comments sold me.

I only buy games new, and only if i feel i must have them. The last time i bought a game was in November, when i bought Uncharted 2 and Demon's Souls (GOTF) on the same day. Before that, it had been almost a year since my last purchase!

And both times not a cent went to Gamestop. I drive an extra 10 minutes to give my money to Best Buy, which is unfortunately the best retail games store nearby. At least they dont ruin brand new games cases with impossible to remove stickers all over them like Gamestop.

awesome?

Any word on the patch? I'm having a bunch of people coming over on Monday to play and it would be nice for it to be glitch free...

probably already posted, video of the "nudity glitch", contains later location spoiler, no story spoilers. of course NSFW, click if you want to see some tits: nude vid page

edit: nudity aside. the way her skin reacts to the light is pretty amazing.

A few cutscenes are prerendered and very badly encoded. Like the one when you arrive at the mall, at the beginning of the game, or the intro / credits sequence.

well, just beat the game. absolutely incredible, easily one of the best games i have ever played.

despite my gripes with the controls, there really is no other game that has had the same affect on me that this game has. christ, i spent a good 30 minutes deciding whether or not
I should take the poison (I did)
and the ending that I got has me flat out depressed.

I want to start another playthrough immediately, but I feel like I'm diminishing how powerful the original playthrough was by doing so.

what a fucking game

Yea I noticed this. I don't understand why they couldn't have upped the quality of these, especially since this game in particular doesn't have that many(size can't be that big an obstacle with just a few can it?)

Okay, so.. I was wondering about the codes for the DLC. It's available the 4th? Does that mean at midnight tonight? Or when exactly?

Where do I even enter these codes? When I go online to the DLC it'll just be available there (in the game menu) and I enter the code? huhzor?

I don't know what to do. my game just seems to freeze up when I try to continue
Chapter Ann Shephard I even tried to reload and it still freezes up

I even just tried reloading the previous chapter too and nothing. What in the hell is going on?

Quit the game. Then restart the game and choose the previous chapter with save on.

As I said I have already tried reloading the previous 2-3 chapters.

Did you quit the game first (as in quit the disc)? Sometimes it helps. Also, if it doesn't work, sometimes quitting PS3 and turning it off for a few minutes also works.

I have tried all of those. Nothing seems to be able to make the game load. Hell I don't even know if starting a new game will work.

Quite a nice glitch you have here quanticdream.

Okay, this may not help but when you load the game after such a glitch, usually there's quite a long 30-40 seconds of black screen (instead of the usual loading screen with character face). Don't turn it off yet. Give the game the chance to load completely.

Otherwise, take a rest, turn off your PS3 and try again tomorrow. Maybe you'll have better luck.

I had the 'black screen of death'. Waited 5 min. Turned off the PS3. After reboot, the game continued off from where it crashed.

Anyone else playing it with the music off? I didn't like the main theme, as they overused it for my personal taste. It works pretty well, except the drug/booze/mansion-party was a bit awkward.

Me and my wife just started the game and damn we are both blown away the subtlety of the animations and environments have really made this a stunning game.

I keep noticing though that it seems like certain parts stutter and some of the audio is off. It doesn't seem to be a frame rate issue it seems more like its just skipping. Have any of you guys experienced that?

I wish this was longer; subsequent playthroughs just aren't the same. Haven't been this engaged by a game since MGS3. I seriously hope they go all out with the DLC and the game sells well.

Please make more games like this.

Yep, ran into both of those every once in a while.

I'm really disappointed that "Mars" never make it into the game at all (unless you count the snippets used in "To Catch A Killer" trailer included with the game). It'd have been a better song to use for the ending theme than whatever it was they ended up using as the song for the ending theme. *sigh*

Mars:

You know what Sony/Quantic Dream? I'd buy a special re-release of the game with the bugs ironed out and with "Mars" included as ending theme or as a part of the soundtrack used in the game. Slim chance, I know.

Me too. It was such a dramatic piece of music. Works wonders in the trailers.
But since it wasn't used in the game... is the song actually written for the game, or was it taken from something else?

Didn't like the ending theme either because it didn't match the tone of my ending at all. I really thought that Quantic Dream would have the foresight to have different credit themes which reflected the different endings.

Alright I have given the PS3 about 2 hours off and it still won't load my saves.

I guess I am just going to wait until a patch comes out or something.

God this game is tense. I can't help but play it in small doses. Ahhhh, the tension!

I have the same, after a few intense scenes I have to quit for the night.

Man I felt bad when Ethan had to cut off his finger before the camera, the screams made me shiver!

Despite the little annoyances, this is one of the best experiences I ever had with a game.

Finished up Heavy Rain Online, the site I told a few of you about. I'd post the small release note I wrote, but GAF is already in the loop.

Enjoy guys, hope we can all make some use of it.

I would like to know the answer to that million dollar question. I mean, what's the likelihood that they buy a song online that match the mood of the game and also happened to be titled "Mars" (as in Ethan Mars)? Hmm, IMO the chances are slim. Plus, it's Sony. Don't they usually just use any E.S. Posthumus song if they don't have an original song ready to use yet? Maybe they originally went with one composer (Nick Ingman) but then they switch to another one (Normand Corbeill) due to unavailability or something. Either way, it's disappointing.

Has anyone else in the Netherlands / Mainland Europe still not received their HMV special edition? Mine supposedly shipped the 23rd, and usually mail from the UK arrives in 3 or 4 days.. in this case.. still nothing. :-/

I ordered Batman AA from them and had to wait longer than usual as well. The other time I ordered from them things went smoothly though. They don't ship from mainland UK but from the channel islands.

I had a peculiar problem with the game yesterday. It started in Madison's chapter and manifested again in the one after. The R2 trigger on the controller just stopped responding, and it didn't help if I switched to another controller. The only thing that helped was to quit and load the chapter again. Anyone else had this problem? I'm using Sixaxis, not Dual Shock 3, by the way.

Just finished the first DLC. I was surprised, the quality is actually quite good and it certainly lives up to expectations set by the rest of the game.
That said, it was rather short... but then I guess the multiple endings makes up for that.

Pretty sure I'll be getting the rest of the DLC... Any word on pricing and how many episodes there'll be?

I thought I'd managed to cover all my tracks when I went into the
Antique shop

Lauren
must have put her fingers over something else when I wasn't looking. :(

Cabinet infront of the front desk area...or front door.

I also didn't wipe...:lol

This game is just amazing...

--When you're Ethan crawling through those tubes all over the glass, navigating through the electric wires for the next clue

--My goodness...cutting off your own finger!! That was so intense...

great game. a little disappointed because i was expecting to be able to piece together clues myself to solve the mystery...instead of just watching the characters do it. didnt matter before long though. really entertaining game and very nice ps3 showpiece

im on my 3rd playthrough right now, for trophies. the blind trophies are killing me though. ive done several chapters over and over exhausting very otion but nothing's popping up. hate to consult a guide but i may have to

so far i have 7 epilogues. i hear there are 18?

anyway...glad i bought this one

Are people's trophies showing up for this game? I've resynced several times, but the Heavy Rain trophies refuse to show up on my online profile.

I have a phat, but it was one of the newer ones that wasn't affected by the date bug.

DItto, though I started Heavy Rain after the PS3 resurrection, I haven't gotten any trophies past
getting the woman to talk and winning the fight in 'Sleazy Palace'
is this normal? I'm just at the part where the
FBI Agent is in his office and starts to go into withdrawl
.
