Hellblade II: Senua's Saga - New Trailer | The Game Awards 2021

I was impressed with the cloth animation as much as anything else, I'm guessing that is all pre-baked simulations? If not and all those mesh vertices are being animated using real time physics then my cap is doubly doffed! Either way, it's another impressive showing for a Brit Dev team...if I may wave my flag without offending anyone. :)

In terms of gameplay? Not even close. In terms of Graphic Fidelity its a looker and at certain angles are to believe its real-time. But there was nothing there that showed me anything interesting or any kind of improvement to Hellblades gameplay which to me is the thing that needs attention.

Also this game was so dark it made Death Stranding look like sunshine and rainbows.

Hellblade is unique. It is not a traditional hack and slash, its more about atmosphere and immersion. As I said before what really stood out was the seemless transitions from cinematic to gameplay. In terms of gameplay this is far above anything ever done period.

Ninja Theory is on another level. :messenger_ok:

I'm more of a wait and see, as it stands I need to see more and something in a different scenario so I can have a better variation of lighting, it was all super dark. But in terms of realtime rendering it was very impressive.

It seems like the casuals are super excited to play this new "Cinematic" "movie like" experience. Who knows, maybe you might have to press a button every once in a a while.
Another cinematic borefest made by people who clearly joined the wrong industry. Next.
It looks very cinematic, reminds me a bit of Heavenly Sword. I need to play the first one to see how I like it.

However hopefully this will put to rest that only Sony makes 'cinematic experiences', and 'walking simulators'.

You can see the point were she turns around and the camera switches for a milisecond to "gameplay mode" then she throws something and it turns again into cinematic or a running gameplay sequence. It was short gameplay mixed with cinematic moments.

Indeed. It's something that Sony (not to draw them into the discussion) have perfected. Just see the Horizon trailers. Lots of in-engine mixed with gameplay.

Not to get drawn into a semantic battle, but the whole point of in-engine cut scenes is for them to appear seamlessly within the flow of gameplay. QTE events, dialogue sequences, long narrative cut-scenes or short "hero" moments are all fundamentally the same from the tech-end. The only difference is what other systems and assets need to resident in memory either side of or concurrently with them.

Always judge based on possibility for variation and user agency radically changing the sequence.
You started the semantic battle yourself. It's a video with gameplay. That's it. You claiming that it's not gameplay is either ignorant or lying.

Yeah right... Keep trolling or live in denial that Hellblade (at least part 1) is more of a cinematic experience than whatever Sony has ever done.

I don't care, I will (hopefully) enjoy Hellblade 2, no matter if it's more or less cinematic than part 1.
For the last time, Hell blade isnt cinematic. Its more of walking simulator, not cinematic experience.

2nd one might be more cinematic. but not the 1st one.

Me too. I am waiting for it.

Nobody believes me? I need more people? WTF

What childish bullshit is this?
He's like 15 😁.

But yeah it looks very good, but clearly not on the same level as the initial trailer which was a CGI 'target render' designed to hype people up for the game, in the same way Killzone 2 was at E3 back in the day.

This looks really good but I wish we could see some actual gameplay. The first one was a good game, though a little repetitive. It was fine for a smaller experience.

This is supposed to be a full, triple-A, cinematic game and I want to see how they're improving the gameplay. I have no doubts technically it's going to be great.

Also, I find the voices thing a little annoying when there's so much going on. Maybe it's me, but it made way more sense when it was only Senua traveling alone. I don't know, it was nice the first time but now it sounds just like they're rehashing the same idea just because they got praised the first time. But I'm happy to be proven wrong, this is just a short trailer after all and we've seen pretty much nothing.

There was gameplay in between , but no hud.

Did people really not play the original? IIRC, it even launched on PS4 and was exclusive for a while before coming to everything. So there was plenty of opportunity to try it when the praise started to flow in about it.

As soon as the gameplay started, this looked like Hellblade but running in UE5. Even the camera movement and angles used were similar. Anyone who spent time with the original should be able to recognize this as gameplay and obviously made by the same team who did the first.

What was presented is actual gameplay lol

The first game had several instances where gameplay sections were blended with cinematics. I am pretty much certain that the walking/pseudo-combat part are actual gameplay. Who says otherwise didn't play the original or are members of the sony defense force.

well fuck me that was an incredible sight to behold, man some of these studios are producing shit thats blowing away hollywood, sure it was heavily scripted but man.. looked insane

Came to the trailer to watch some action and finally see something new from Ninja Theory. Saw 6 minutes of an impressive walking simulator where Senua would walk, then run, then throw and rinse and repeat. As super impressive as it looks, it's just walking and running to me, where's the gameplay (the action, the setpiece)? Audio is impressive, but Ninja Theory is no slouch when it comes to audio. I expected them to show more to be honest. And they also described that you're now leading other people. Jesus Christ, here comes babysitter Senua. I hated having to babysit Atreus in God Of War and I'm not going to make this an exception. I'll reserve further judgement until I see more.

When I think of all of the games I've ever seen announced and then later played, Hellblade is the one that most sticks in my mind that I fired it up and thought "wow this actually looks exactly like the game they showed us at E3"

Did you even play the original? This is what Hellblade was. It wasn't God of War.

Thanks for updating the OP with a 4k trailer OP.
Looks stunning, really stunning.
I wasnt super keen on the first game, it was a bit of a slog to get through. Will def check this out though.

It wasn't, because it was an indie game made on zero budget, with tons of dev diaries explaining how they're trying to make the game with tape and shoestring. Personally, I hoped the gameplay would be a lot more advanced in the new one.

If the only thing that it takes to qualify as a gameplay trailer is showing some walking in between in-game cutscenes, that is a low bar indeed. Looks amazing graphically, but I hope they detail a lot more meaningful interactivity in the future than this. Basically just was watching a movie.

I think The Last of Us 2 is a better example of almost perfect switch from in-game cinematic sequences switching over to gameplay.

It's literally make vs no make up. One vid she's all painted up the other she's sweaty, dirty.. fighting for her life.

I clearly remember PS4 players singing the first games praises all over GAF when it was exclusive to that console. Now MS own them it feels like the temperature has changed.

I watched the trailer in bed before nodding off. My eyes rolled so hard at Geoff saying it's gameplay when it looked anything but.
I recently started the first game on the XSX and impressed with the audio design (I'm sure MS bought them for their tech in this area, I remember watching a NT video on it and being super impressed). Noticed yesterday the same tech was being used in Infinite.

The original was heavily atmospheric, which made it unique and looked great from a technical standpoint. Its greatest strength was its reliance on binaural audio, for those who had supported headphones, it was a feast for the ears. But what was it that the devs said much earlier? Of course, that they would drastically expand upon the things that made the first one great and heavily expand upon the combat as well. I can see the obvious improvement in atmospherics, ambiance and audio. But this? This was just walking around, then running and throwing, it wasn't exactly what I would call, "gameplay". As impressive as it looks, it didn't show much in terms of actual gameplay. Like i said, I'll reserve judgement until I see more. If my comment offended you in some way, I apologise, that wasn't my intention. "Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one" , and this is mine, for now.

It's rigid body physics, this cloth animation is calculated in real time. Something being used in tons of games since the PS2 era, I remember games like the GoW ones from PS2 or PSP using it.

But they did put love and attention to detail here to make it look great.

Gorgeous. The shine on Senua's eyes is something else. Hopefully it is as fun to play as it is visually stunning.

Uncharted 5 will be along soon to gratify you

Really want to see more. Maybe it was some sort of semi cinematic/gameplay sequence. Not sure. Really hard to say. It looked like it was alternating between ingame cutscenes and ingame gameplay that is being rendered. It felt like there was a slight shift in the resolution, framerate and animations going back and forth.

It was pretty cool. Looking forward to the final game release.

This game literally kills the " sony games walking simulator" trolling. Hellblade is more closer to an actual waking simulator than any of sonys games. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Games ain't just about shooting and blowing shit up every 5 seconds.

Some of the animations could have been better. Also sometimes it was almost like that running animation didn't match the speed the character was moving. Graphics were very good but I'm not sure if I like that aspect ratio for games.

Yeah, the complaints of games being too "cinematic" is such a weird criticism. If HS 2 is a blast to play then why is the fact that it is "cinematic" a bad thing? Somehow twisting a gorgeous game with exceptional narrative into a negative.......I'll never get that.

More than the graphics (which are impressive btw) I really liked the atmosphere!
I have yet to play the 1st game, and this made me want to play asap. I will probably try to play it this week!
