Not sure I agree. This game looks way better to me.
 
Looks absolutely fantastic. This just oozes atmosphere.
Ninja Theory have yet to disappoint me with any of their games. They've only become better with each new title. A very talented, generally very underrated studio.

I don't know what NT are going to do. I agree that they aren't great at making their thematic ambitions a reality. But I also don't think they're necessarily trying to be deep or controversial. Tropey mental illness is sometimes just a way to make things interesting, to make the viewer/player question what is happening in a way they normally wouldn't.

I guess where I disagree with the critics in this thread is that I don't think mental illness in fiction has to be treated a certain way. If NT think they're making a deep philosophical statement about genuine mental illness and they fuck it up, then I'll complain just as loud as everyone else. If they just want to do a questionable-reality kind of thing in their game, then fine by me.

Hellblade is a much lower budget game than Heavenly Sword.
 
I'll watch this with cautious optimism. I'm not completely sold yet, but I like the direction they're taking this, and could see it turning into something really interesting.

The camera looks like it needs to be pulled back a bit, but then we've only a small snippet, so for all we know it could actually work very well.

You wouldn't need a professor and a charitable institute for just using the "reality is questionable" trope. Hell, you don't even need mental illness for that, "it's fucking magic" works just as fine.

They're definitely trying to be 3 deep 5 me again, I'm embarrassed just from remembering that fucking twitter scene in DmC. GOD.

I'm still very much willing to give them a chance. After all, even if the story is just as bad as DmC, I still loved DmC, so it's alright. Day one.

Think God Hand style combat. At least thats what they said they were going for in an earlier interview.

It looks okay for the most part, definitely going to want to see more about the gameplay.

Hopefully they've learned how to design their combat this time around from the start. Their action games have beautiful environments and color, but all of their action games have been sub par at best

Wouldn't want another "Definitive Edition" to happen so soon again.

Anyone know if it was capcom themselves or NT that rebalanced and reworked the combat in DmC:DE?

In what way, shape, or form? This is a niche title exploring a subject without the slightest mass market appeal. I don't know why they wouldn't want to tackle psychosis in an impactful way.

All the negativity seems unwarranted. Ninja Theory isn't the first developer that comes to mind when I think about serious portrayals of most any subject, but I'm still glad to see a developer approaching the theme of mental health in a serious way. Hoping for the best.

It was NT. Rahni Tucker (DmC's combat designer) directed the DE herself.

I hope they keep her as a creative director for the bigger team if they're to keep this independent small team + AAA publisher backed big team structure.
 
The whole metal illness thing is fascination and pretty great, though I have to say it should have been held for later on the game, it would have been far greater to have this journey where at one point you start questioning what is real and what is not, just to find out at the end that it is all in its head (more or less)

But from what I'm seeing, Hellblade is getting better and better, and I'm getting more excited for it, the One on One combat seems to be a bit rough, but they will get there, I know it.
 
I think it looks meh. What's up with Ninja theorys art style variety? Is this game related in any form to Heavily sword? Same generic uninspired Indian looking girl mixed with unsaturated colors.

Uhm... I don't see the problem here. The horror in this game (and it's not actually a horror game so your comment makes even less sense) are the things the mentally ill protagonist imagines (in other words, things happening to the person because of their mental illness). It's not like in traditional horror where you've got a serial killer committing their crimes because they're mentally ill.

Really? So a person living through something like schizophrenia isn't experiencing horror? This is from the perspective of someone going through mental illness, not about fighting someone who suffers from it.

Your comment is really ironic considering they're actually supported by a mental health group which hopes that people will get a new perspective on these issues through the game. But nope, just call them dicks because you read mental illness.
 
Uh, looks cool, interesting concept but very little gameplay, lets wait until E3 for impressions.

Mental Ilness is a twist i was not expecting, if they focus on horror elements this could be a memorable and fresh game for them, loved the concept on Mc Gee Alice :)

Also, no matter the writter, story couldnt possibly be as bad as DmC. im confident they will surpass that.
 
Yeah, the decision to only show short shots of combat doesn't surprise me after their last dev diary, where they admitted they were struggling to nail it. They seem to know what they're after though, and their economical approach to usage of assets could be big for future indie devs exploring the 3D space, so good luck to them.

Some very interesting things being experimented with in regards to combat at the end of that video... the actual gameplay shown is very rough, but they state that this is being shown MUCH earlier in development than what is typical, and it's because they want to share the entire development process with us.

Give it time folks.

I missed all that stuff about professors and institutes. Like I said, if they try and fail then I guess I'll complain, but honestly I don't care that much. I don't think "treating mental illness wrong" in a game is any more problematic than "treating war wrong" which basically happens in every shooter.
 
I really liked the look of it. Seems to be promoting awareness of mental health issues. Definitely heard Andy Serkis too.
 
Footage looks a bit rough which is OK since game still in development. I think it would be foolish to sleep on Ninja Theory cause I believe they have come a long way since their early days.

The premise for the game and exploring the mental illness is what has me hooked so I'll keep a look out for this. Also this game should've been about KAI from HS. Cause this is how I see the KAI more grown up. Was easily one of the best parts of HS.
 
This looks really interesting and pretty scary too.

They also said it's their first playable build, I'd hope they pull back the camera a bit.
 
Looks good for such a small team. Hopefully they succeed in their aim of creating a AAA quality game on a low budget. Their dev diary on trying to make the mo-cap cheaper was pretty cool. People should watch their latest dev diary too, excellent.

What's special about it is their independent AAA approach and their open development. Whether the game itself is going to special remains to be seen but the project certainly is special and if it succeeds it could really become an exciting new way for developers to independently create the games they want to create at a quality and scope that can compete with AAA big-budget titles.

Yeah, it's really good; very informative and a clear insight into what they're planning to achieve. To my surprise, that diary did more to amp me up for the game than the new trailer.
 
Haters gonna hate, but seeing a game that manages to balance a well researched portrayal of someone with mental illness with a well made female protagonist and the fucking spectacle fighter genre , is something worth noting. I really REALLY hope that they succeed with this one. it's a fantastic example of character diversity in gaming.
