Helldivers |OT| Everybody Fights, Nobody Quits.

Can i play the game with random dudes on PS4? my friends are not going to buy this games but i want to try it out, looks fun.

Arrowhead nailed weapon feedback in this game. I love the feeling of only just keeping the reigns on the monstrous force of the machine gun. Combined with the visual and audio effects, it makes the weapons feel incredibly dangerous - which is good - because they are.

So finally got the Repair Gun stratagem and was disappointed to learn it is one time use only. Seems to be a pretty excessive restriction. Was hoping it would have a long cool down but be unlimited use (90 seconds, even 120 seconds). Oh well.

So I just bit the bullet and bought 3 month's worth of ps+ after so long of not renewing my subscription. Hopefully, I may see some positive benefit to this.

If you die your teammates should pick it up.

Great game. Got to level 15 with a good team of randoms. One person can fuck up the whole game pretty easily though. Played for like 7 hours straight. Its been a long time sine i sat that long with a single game. Best purchase for me in a while. Singleplayer is useless though.

I kind of find rolling solo to be a refreshing challenge. I mean a party of 4 people is were it is at (so much more XP as well), but the feeling of accomplishment when I get on the ship for the extraction is supreme.

Overall this game is cool but has a few issues they could address:

  • Stuff constantly falling out of the sky and killing you is sort of funny the first few times it happens. Then it's just really annoying. Especially because it seems stuff doesn't seem to fall exactly where you think it will. It lands in the vicinity but sometimes it's off by a few yards and that usually happens to be where I (or someone else) is standing.
  • There needs to be some on-screen indicator of where the next missing objective is. I understand you're free to choose which one you want to do next, but it really sucks to have to constantly stop, hit the big button, and look around the map for where you're going. Meanwhile you're still getting wrecked by enemies. You should be able to highlight the mission you want to do, and have an arrow on the edge of the screen pointing towards it at all times.
  • No invite system for friends? Huh?
  • I just spent 40 minutes in a game that we had no hope of winning - yet somehow we held out for 40 minutes just to fail in the end. The other three people I was playing with ALL had mics. But none of them ever said a damn word. I tried talking to them but no one talked back. Just a lot of heavy breathing. It would have been an epic time if we'd have come out of that 40 minutes with something as a reward, but instead we didn't get much and no one ever talked. Then it was over. That's not the game's fault but seriously people, if you're going to put the mic on, use it.

Yes, I've had a similar experience... Nothing sucks more than spending time and getting nothing at all out of it. Some XP for killing enemies would go a long way. Still though, loving the game.

Me too. Good for that coffee break where you just want to grind out a mission.

Dumb question: you can cross play this with friends on other consoles right? For example, I can join up with my friends on their PS4s when I'm on my VITA?

If so:
omfg

Is cross everything.

Are you sure there is CrossPlay? Have you tried this personally? I tried last night, two friends and I were playing on the PS4, one friend was playing on the Vita but he couldn't join us, he saw our names in Multiplayer > Friends on the ship bridge listed as "Online", but he couldn't join our game and vice versa. Perhaps it was just a connection problem if there is in fact CrossPlay in the game.

Edit: Just checked Arrowhead's website and it says there is Cross-Play. Maybe it just wasn't working for me last night then, will try again. Has anyone got it to work?

So lucky my roommates controller doesn't have that awful trigger issue, now I can actually try some other stuff. Randoms sure do love it when I use the healing beam, was hoping they had a good support tool like that.

I would love to get in on some GAF Helldiver group action, up to level 13 now I think? I love this game.

I had high hopes for this game when looking at previews, good to see it is a positive experience. Will pick it up tonight and play with randoms (i'm over convincing mates which games are good lol....have just as much fun with randoms anyways). I love shmups and twin stick shooters, they're my second fave genre.

Is there much depth and levelling up elements in this game? Wouldn't mind investing a fair bit of time into it. Also are there many different enemy designs and any boss monsters? Would be so sweet if there were bosses!

Can I fall in love with the game if I'm only ever going to play single player? I don't like games that feel like they're impossible to beat alone if that helps any

Is it just me or is the medium difficulty setting completely barren in matchmaking? All I ever see are people in easy, or people in hard atm. I saw it last night too.

Quick question, are there bosses at the end of each stage or area? Or is it just endless waves of enemies while trying to accomplish objectives?

It was kinda a rush haha. But it was my first game.
I don't care for friendly fire. I'm too scared to fire my gun

I get why it's in there, it's part of the thrill, but what I can really do without is spawning into someone's game and immediately crushing them. Makes you feel like a massive jerk, and it counts against your totals in the end. I feel like that one thing that shouldn't kill you is your reviving of teammates.

Has anybody found the jump pack useful at all? Or the flame thrower?

They just seem so useless to me.

The flamethrower I'm not seeing too much of, but the jump pack i've seen put to great use by people dodging around certain enemies that have very small and defended weak points.

WOW this game is fun.

Played more tonight, including my first MP. I jumped into a mission near the beginning, the four of us did a very solid job the rest of the way. The other three guys all died due to a pair of unlucky/ill timed grenades but I was able to avoid long enough to reinforce. We had a pretty solid rapport within minutes, but sadly I had to leave after the mission ended because of a work phone call.

Played a bit more single player to level up, I'm finding this game to be well balanced. Sure the mission difficulty scales up pretty quick once you start doing lvl 4+ missions solo, but it's not frustrating difficulty at all, something about the gameplay and mechanics make failure seem fair when it does happen.

Deceptively pretty game too, and the sound is great. Very much worth $20 if anyone is on the fence.

Why can't I filter 4/4 games? It also seems to break if I filter for ONLY medium difficulty games. Needs to be more warning for where new players are spawning too.

There are no bosses, but not really waves of enemies either.

On all maps there will be enemy patrols, and one enemy type signals an alarm that brings down the horde on your position. If you can kill these before they get a chance to signal for reinforcements missions can be very easy.

On the harder difficulties some tough enemies that may as well be bosses will start coming in when enemy patrols signal the alarm. Successfully completing a hard mission (7-12) is all about keeping on the move and triggering as few alarms as possible, so your team isn't overwhelmed by really tough enemies that whittle your team down and prevent you from completing certain objectives.

Thanks I figured. I was trying to get the hang of the flame thrower and that slow burn damage seems wore trouble than it's worth.

So local and online can play together?

Going by that, it also allowing Vita, PS3 and 4 players playing together, oddly authentic squad combat, underhanded sense of humor, this might already be the co-op game of the year.

I played local and online with my wife using my JPN account but it kicked us off online when i later tried to take 4 local players online when the other 2 were guest accounts without PS+.

So has it been discussed that the mechs are completely game breaking lol
yup, exos are broken as fuck.

the problem is that most of the people don't understand that, even if you fucking tell them "get an exosuit goddamn". you could argue that they're not as good in level 8+ (for bugs) or 6-7+ (for the rest) when you start seeing tanks or other enemies that exos can't destroy. still, they're good for everything else so you should get them anyway.

one good combo that should work well even at 10+ is 2 exo, 1 guy with the rocket launcher for the tanks, 1 guy healing/doing other stuff. also you need to move FAST. survivors? Lol, kill them on sight. you shouldn't really bother with "don't let this thing get destroyed" missions.

speaking of EXOS, the second upgrade iirc says "missiles get the anti-tank ability", yet they don't fucking work on tanks? I know that if you're near the target you'll miss but it still didn't work for me.

thanks for the info, I'm getting it next week after my business trip :D can't wait.

I've been loving my time with Helldivers so far! My brother and I picked it up to play coop and the difficulty, friendly fire considerations and fantastic feel have all contributed to a great time.

Actually, the main reason I could see myself playing this for a long time is because they nailed the feel of the guns. The tracer effects of bullets look really fantastic. Combine that with the excellent sound effects, particularly when your clip is running dry, and the guns pack power. Then combine that with the way the enemies strongly react to being hit with a good amount of recoil, viscera splatter and stages of damage and you have a game that makes me want to play it just to fire the guns. So many games get "feel" wrong that it's refreshing to find one that gets it right.
