Hey Americans! Why do you hate vinegar so much?

So I just got back from a trip. I stopped by Detroit, Birmingham, Nashville and for the bulk of the time, New Orleans. Fucking amazing trip, New Orleans is so cool. Detroit was just as boring as the last time I went, and Birmingham and Nashville were cool, but nothing compared to nawlins.

So anyway, any restaurant I went to, there is NO vinegar to be soon. I was aware of this before, but this just re-enforced how big of a problem this is. I had chicken fingers and fries in detroit, but there was no vinegar? How am I supposed to eat chicken fingers and fries without vinegar? It's an abomination, just terrible. So plain. And Ketchup just doesn't do the job, ugh. I'm gonna have to bring a flask with vinger in it next time I go to the US.

Also when I was at the gas stations for pit stops, I didn't see any Salt and Vinegar flavoured chips? The fuck? That's the best flavour!

What's wrong with you guys!?

Wat? There's a ton of gas stations with Salt and Vinegar chips. Also there's a lot of restaurants that have malt vinegar available. Off the top of my head I know Jack and the Box has it.

Vinegar as a condiment is a regional thing. You should come visit in the Philippines. We have lots of "suka" of many types. Made from Rice, Coconut, Sugar cane. Then you either put on as is or have it soaked in hot peppers. Its awesome.

And HFCS. You cant eat in america without an unhealthy amount of HFCS.
Hunts makes ketchup without HFCS. Tastes better and I convinced my family to switch over. And the vinegar we're talking about, is it the distilled white vinegar or the malt vinegar?

I like the occasional batch of salt & vinegar chips. I don't really use it on other stuff though.

P.S. I hate ketchup.

I adore vinegar and like nothing better than a big bowl of salad with a little olive oil and a ton of whatever type of vinegar I have on hand. That acetic acid flavor is good stuff. I apologize for my countrymen being so thick. :V

They don't have real bacon either, guy. That bothers me a lot more than the lack of vinegar.

Most of our groceries carry mostly imitation foods. We have real food, but you have to go to farmer's markets, whole foods, and specific grocery stories. Typical groceries in America use corn, soy, wheat to make virtually everything because our government subsidizes these crops mad crazy, so real food is expensive in comparison.

I love vinegar with salads. Garlic, shallots, balsamic vinegar, olive oil, and other spices make good salad dressing. It is impossible to find real salad dressing at most groceries. Doesn't matter if it's buttermilk ranch, real mayo, or olive oil and vinegar, the ingredients are without fail soybean oil, corn syrup, salt.

First ingredient is soy.

To be fair, I'm not aware of a single real recipe on the market anymore.

Irrelevant, it's still the best by far.

You want to touch the face of God? Wait for ripe summer tomatoes and make a tomato sandwich with Duke's, salt, pepper, and white bread.

So what the fuck do you guys use for a normal salad dressing then?

Oil+vinegar is the only choice for a plain salad. No bullshit about strange sauces or so, it's just the default for it.

Chips + vinegar, while strange as it sounds it's pretty good one you get to taste it. Still only used in Britain and France I think.

It kind of ruins the point of eating a salad, but Bleu Cheese dressing all the way!

Fried food is merely a vessel for whatever sauce/condiment you want to consume. Does anyone here eat plain chicken fingers? Plain fries (no salt)? Plain wings? Plain nuggets? Plain potato skins? Plain fried shrimp? Plain potato wedges? Plain anything fried? Everything fried typically has some condiment attached to it. It's so.....gross :\

Most americans use prebuilt salad dressing. Italian salad dressing etc. Only real foodies in america will make their own using olive oil+vinegar.

which I have done!

Add a couple drops of sesame oil to that = awesome. Only a couple drops though, shit is strong.

One tastes like egg, the other tastes like sugar and rancid mayo.

truth

Also, no Salt & Vinegar chips, must have not looked in New Orleans. Cause Zapps and a few other brands got that more than covered.

I have seen vinegar in eateries in Philly, Miami and a few back home in New Orleans.

Will do. If I wasn't an artist I definitely would have gone to culinary school. Also, I'm going to try this fries+vinegar thing ASAP.

I'm american and I put malt vinegar on my fries all the time. I will also then put a ton of salt and a bit of ketchup on them. The rest of my family does the same, with the addition of some old bay seasoning (we're from Maryland). I would never, ever dream of putting mayo on fries.

Also, american bacon is superior to all other types.

Malt vinegar and old bay seasoning. Or balsamic vinegar. I've never tried just plain white vinegar though. Some people people like that on their fries.

Soy oil and vegetable oil taste almost exactly the same. What is the problem?

Both have about 0 flavor. The processing used to extract the oils from seeds and soybeans is harsh, and the oil is polyunsaturated so it is very unstable and goes rancid rapidly. Food processors bleach and deodorize most of these to mask the rancid taste. Exceptions are cold pressed stuff like sesame oil, which does have a ton of flavor.

I prefer salads that use olive oil, cream, lard. Those oils have tons of flavor whereas soy has none.

Pretty much. I wouldn't expect vinegar in the southeast. It's all over the northern border states, from coast to coast.

Vinegar lives and thrives down south too. NC style BBQ you can pour your own vinegar. Even dunk your hushpuppies in it.

or are you one of those that says North Carolina ain't the South?

Shit, now I hope you like it! I love it though.

Mayo on fries was bizarre to me until I went to the Netherlands. Soooooo good. You need to use the right style though.

And American bacon is the worst shit in the world. It is just a strip of fat. It is not even cut from the right part of the pig.

Yes, but the oil in mayonnaise is not there for flavour, it is there to add body to thje condiment, it contributes no flavour at all. Oil with a flavour in mayonnaise would be... weird. But I might have to try making some.

Edit: I think maybe you thought I was talking about salad dressings in regards to soy oil. Yeah, for salad dressing you are absolutely correct, you want a nice olive oil or something. I was only referring to mayonnaise.

NC style is the best bbq around. There's a local bbq joint in md that has the most perfect apple cider vinegar based sauce. Sooo good.

That's the point. When you cook the bacon all crispy that fat just crumbles and melts in your mouth. American bacon also has that irresistible smoky flavor. Get it maple or brown sugar cured and it's like god came in your mouth.

What's it called? May have to pay them, a visit.

re: bacon
I had some hand cut back bacon once, it looked just like the British stuff. You had to get it from the backwoods of NC from people of whom I could not understand one word spoken, but my granddad did. It was damn meaty and that thick strip of fat, that's how bacon was in the olden days he said. I could take that strip of fat and just gnaw on it. And don't even mention dipping it in moleasses. I was in American saturated fat heaven. The store bought stuff had nothing on it.

Actually both are. The only real solution to both is ranch dressing. It tastes way better in any situation. And no one thinks you're weird for putting ranch on your fries.

No fights here!

I was going over everything and I could only think of certain states' barbecue and OCCASIONALLY southeastern-only vegetables. Occasionally. You'll get vinegar root vegetables in North Dakota more often than you will vinegar collard greens in Georgia.

I have a low tollerence of Vinegar. Verging onto a alergic reaction possibly. It makes me feel sick if its really strong, and the taste is meh.

It's called adam's rib. The ribs are really awesome (baby back) but I don't care as much for the pulled pork since it's pulled really finely. I like bigger chunks of meat in my pulled pork. I just wish md had more in the way of bbq.
