This cat on my street hits me up on occasion, cat seems like it's well fed wherever it lives but I planned on giving it a little something to munch on next time I saw it. I had a piece of fish last time but the cat split before I could hand it off.

if it looks like it's well fed already I wouldn't feed it. A) you don't know what kind of diet the owner has the cat on, some can be very picky about what their pets eat and B) the cat will start expecting food from you

Cats eat meat. They are carnivores. Cat food in a can is cheap and they usually love that or you can buy a cheap tin can of sardines and watch it go nuts.

My families new kitten likes cabbage leaves for some strange reason. He's a little odd.

But he and his sister mostly have cat food and fish as a treat sometimes.

Actually here's a list of stuff before you accidentally kill the bugger

Don't feed a stranger cat anything. It will then expect food from you and annoy the shit out of you, and you may be inadvertently harming the cat if it has specific dietary needs due to health issues.

One of ours goes nuts for peas when I'm cooking vegetables. A small handful of those might be a nice healthy treat.

Things my cat eats: cat food, fish, chicken, mice, pepperoni sticks, goldfish crackers, dog food, and pretty much anything else that he sees me eating.

(Don't worry I don't actively feed him anything that he isn't supposed to eat. But he's a sneaky bastard who sometimes steals food.)

Half the stuff on the 'DO' side is not great. Cats are carnivores. In fact, cats MUST eat meat. They can get a tiny amount of nutrition from other things, but not enough to survive.

The issue is that they have very short digestive tracts, so their ability to break down plant material is minimal. Feeding your cat vegetables is doing almost nothing for them.

Cat food; it's like 60 cents a can. Careful with human canned fish; loaded with salt, which our kidneys are somewhat ok with for a few decades, but theirs are bad at processing so much. Even low sodium for us is like as much salt in treats for them.

My cat begs for spinach, cheddar, and pastries. She was all distressed yesterday when I sat down with a piece of king cake and hadn't given her any yet.

We'll give her some plain cooked meat (no seasoning of any kind) on the rare occasion that we cook though.
