Hey NeoGaffer, you could be a rapist

i needed a way to get the message of the people across. i then changed it to, "#STOP RAPE CULTURE ... PLEASE, Do Not Rape."

#PleaseDoNotRape #IRentedThisCameraForAFullDayAndHaveNoIdeaWhatToDoWithIt

Valhelm figuring out the motivation to the video has me really excited for where this thread goes now when it comes to victim blaming or the gender politics.

I doubt Fousey is some kind of evil MRA mastermind. It's much more likely he made a very stupid mistake doing this and only realized it after it went viral.

You can be a rapist! You too could be a rapist! We can all be rapists!

But seriously the video was actually decent till the end, dumb. Idk why he changed it to that. Trying to be different just to be different.

This "experiment" was dumb and we're all dumber for having learned of it.

May god have mercy on our souls.

And thus a poorly construed message is created resulting in people making fun of it thus everyone is making light of a serious topic. Well done that video maker.

This 'experiment' is on the level of 'NO JOHN, YOU ARE THE DEMONS' ... or rapists, in this case. I doubt it serves anything but inflate the ego of the activist in question.

How could mirrors be real if our eyes aren't real?

Would've been better with a message thanking those that attempted to confront the 'rapist'. Not say they could be a rapist.....

I strongly believe that it wouldnt even take that much that we would turn on, kill and eat each other. rape is not an exception here.
just look at mass rapings in war zones over the centuries, most of these rapers would have been the first to demand the dicks cut off of rapists in their normal society. dont underestimate the monster inside all of us, just waiting for the opportunity to display power and getting away with it.

To be fair, they never had a mirror and a passive message in lipstick reveal the true monster inside of them. It's not like they could even know.

Great. Now I have the song "Search for the Hero" going through my head but with the word hero replaced with rapist. I shouldn't be having such thoughts but this is what happens when bad video messages are made.

I remember seeing urinal drain covers that read "You have the power to stop rape in your hands."

I didn't think I would ever feel offended by taking a piss before.

Couldn't see it mentioned anywhere, but is he donating the profits of this video to a charity or help program? Dodgy otherwise.

Limiting "anyone" to males weirdly misses the point of the statement "anyone can be a rapist" too, doesn't it? I get that far more men commit it (or at least, are arrested for committing it but I honestly don't believe anyone who thinks it's a 50/50 split or something dumb) but it just seemed weird. I suppose it was in a men's bathroom.

Anyway, I think the main issue with this is the message it sends is a mixed one. From what the guy wrote, he had the idea of the sounds coming from the bathroom long before he came up with a message. But I think that kind of shows. People busting into that room to see what was going on are trying to stop a potential rape....but who is committing it isn't really important. If this guys channel is about social experiments etc., and "anyone can be a rapist" was the message, he could have perhaps challenged peoples perceptions in a different way. Set up a similar experiment by having an unsuspecting person invited to a dinner party with friendly people, with a couple there who perhaps show some signs of a troubled relationship (subtly though). I can think of a number of issues with that idea, not least the amount of setup it would take, but I think they could be worked through and the end result would convey a clearer message that might stick with people.

I don't think this was very well thought out. If anything, this could inspire sympathy for rapists because it causes the viewer to empathize with them by putting them in the same category.

Stupid art.

Extremely stupid and clumsy execution completely spoiling a decent overall message. Unfortunately what people are going to take is 'you could be a rapist!' and not 'a rapist could be anyone'.

Nobody is understanding the video. It isn't "feminazi misandrist bullshit". This is a video put out by some sort of Men's Rights Organization, making the ridiculous claim that, if you see somebody being assaulted, you should do nothing. The makers of this video are pushing some kind of MRA agenda, saying that "feminists can accuse any man of rape".

The (bullshit) message of the video is that even if he's innocent, a man could be accused of rape. An innocent man of any profession could be accused of raping a woman, if he's in the wrong place at the wrong time. This video is intended to deligitimize feminism and paint it as a movement that is inherently anti-male.

It's no accident that the video diminishes rape. The video is not about victims or intended for victims. It's meant to further an MRA agenda, that evil feminists can accuse men for rape whenever they want.

Valhelm figuring out the motivation to the video has me really excited for where this thread goes now when it comes to victim blaming or the gender politics.

Not that I agree at all, but I thought this was interesting, why did this path of discussion completely shut down?

GAF has a total of 130,000 members.
Approximately 30% of them will at some point in their life commit either rape or sexual assault.

That's close to 40 thousand gaffers.
It is guaranteed that someone in this thread has or will at some point sexually assault or rape a fellow human being.

Statistics is tough.

Well, obviously it is if you think the bolded line is what the statistics say, independent of whether it's 3% or 30%. Because that's not how statistics work. No one on GAF could be a rapist and the statistics could still hold true.

GAF certainly isn't a representative sample of the population, and even then, it just would be somewhat unlikely that no one on GAF would be a rapist.

Just to emphasise on your second point ;)

I doubt Fousey is some kind of evil MRA mastermind. It's much more likely he made a very stupid mistake doing this and only realized it after it went viral.

It look like the Fousey guy really didn't know what he was doing when he made his video. His Twitter and Youtube comments seem very counter to what the video implies. His decision to change the text on the mirror from "YOU JUST SAVED A LIFE" to "THIS IS A RAPIST" is, frankly, suspicious as fuck. I think he wanted the video to be memorable, easy to be shared, but not strongly opinionated in one way or the other.

You can be a rapist! You too could be a rapist! We can all be rapists!

Nah, I don't think putting people through a Rape Scene Simulator is a decent way of making them more aware of that horrible crime. Not to mention that it's all fake (fortunately so, of course), which to me looks like it's saying "Hey, this woman is getting raped. Why won't you rush in and help her? Oh, you did? Gotcha, the rape is a lie!". That isn't making people take rape more seriously, that's probably making them question whether the sounds they hear are true or not the next time they happen.

This is without mentioning the "You look like a potential rapist" ending, but since you already said you disagree with that I have no need to say anything about it.

Clearly some attention whore wanting more views while parading as some great visionary.

It's a video that accomplishes nothing original, other than an irritatingly convoluted message. Sure, if you're super pessimistic maybe anyone could be a rapist. I don't believe that. Troubled individuals are rapists. I will never rape anyone and I can say that with 100% certainty, and the same could be said of a lot of people.

At least it portrays rape in a negative light but that was pretty fucking obvious to anyone with half a brain already.

I think this is a good point too, which is completely botched by the whole "Looking in a mirror: You could be a rapist" thing.

The logical thought for most people is "No, I'm not a rapist."
And, for most people, it's probably true - they're not, and never would be.

So as opposed to getting the point across that a rapist could be "anyone," "even someone like you," it's being presented as "you are a rapist."

Or as some call it, "The Pixar-Gusteau Rape Philosophy".

Edit: The adverts on this page for me are for lawyer firms. Uhohhh!

The people rushing in to help is what save the video, isn't it great that even though the media and stuff make it seem like we're very individualistic and unwilling to help eachother, but then we still all rush in when we hear someone in need of help. Humans aren't half as bad as we often think we are.

Can we start banning people for rape jokes? That shit is unacceptable.

I'm sorry to do this to you, but George Carlin is mandatory.
