Hi-res Gears of War video

I guess you haven't been in the Metal Gear Solid 4 topic?

Game looks great.

OK, so you went PS3 instead and have no intention of buying a 360 ? If so please spare us your tearless crying about why the game doesnt appeal to you because you aint interested anyway.

The fact that you are basing all this upon "this trailer" just shows your trolling is a little late. The game has been known about for two E3's so excuse me if i troll spot you.
I watched the latest video to see what all the buzz was about lately and stated my opinion on that.

I'll buy a 360 as soon as there is one must have game (maybe Mass Effect) thats not going to PC or PS3, but this game doesnt seem to be it (for me)

Er, I think not. That framerate is not impressive at all. First time I've seen a video of Gears of War and frankly, I don't know what all the fuss is about.

You'd make a more compelling argument if GeOW wasn't first shown way back when expectations were actually high (ex. KZ), and the gameplay hadn't always been in question.

Although I don't know what people are complaining about here...no game next-gen has really had any breakout gameplay, and executing something well is whats important. Mission succeeded.

Only by those who dont know what power next gen consoles offer, I found it obvious that games will look as good and better on both 360 and PS3

The segment demo wasn't the most exciting sequence to display but oh well. We know there is uberBosses in the game, so why not show one and display how your title is not just "30 seconds of fun" in a uninteresting way....
Very nice to see Epic locking the framerate down, but knowing their track record with PC Games and performance, I was expecting no less :)

As far as people stating this looks boring, derivitive, lame, etc., Wait to actually get to hold/play a final copy that has the context of a narrative to back it up.....

I personally love duck and cover shooters ala, Kll.Switch, Everything or Nothing, etc., so this title suits my tastes just fine

....my only criticism at this point it the overdone macho/big dick voice overs. I mean, I can respect that I will be playing a badass in the game, but I don't need to be audiblely reminded with the "smokin Marlboro reds inbetween kicking ass" voices on a regular basis....

i never expected KZ to look like that, actually :P
But Gow actually looking like the first screens has been questioned by many until the game was shown in realtime. Then it was the framerate's turn. Not by everyone of course, i'm referring to people who always had doubts on different aspects of the game.

I agree that the portion of the game demoed at X06 was very basic (all Cliffy did was staying in that dry fountain shooting guys and taking cover) but i don't see why one should assume the game will be a 10hrs reiteration of the same exact thing.

"ok, maybe it does look like the screenshots, but look at the frame rate lolololol it will either be downgraded or it will run at 10fps lololololol"

*gow demoed in real time, smooth as silk*
"yeah, ok, it looks good but all you do is take cover and shoot, how lame ! lololol"

oh well
It's GAF, and it's why we love it :D

I think this close to launch, Cliffy B wants to keep the great gaming moments a secret. I think the demo demonstrated that the game has a smooth framerate, has intense firefights, and the chainsaw gun is still cool. Personally, I want to have the great gaming moments when I have the game in my X360 on my TV.

Yep.....imagine some of the great many moments in something like RE4 (which wasn't even on everyone's radar as much until AFTER it came out and received its glorious praise) spoiled by stage demos, gameplay vids, screenies, etc.

....get the general concept/gameplay out there and let the rest be revealed when the shit if out

It almost feels like the demo was just to show the people that the game is running smooth and the graphics are top notch. The e3 demo was a much better demonstration in that there was a beginning, some progress and action and then ending when the huge monster comes out. Here they just jumped in the game, Cliffy showed his mad GoW skills on easy difficulty and that's it. Can't wait to see some more HD footage from MP and SP cause I'm really pumped for this game!

Actually no, i haven't :) Basically, because i don't need to know anything about MGS4: Day one purchase for me, since msx episodes !

Back to GOW, i really think, like someone else said, cliffy b was just demonstrating the engine and core mechanics, there's no reason to assume the whole game will be like that.

I've read a few reports from people who've played the first couple areas at x06 stage, and there already is some diversity.

Never doubt teh Cliffy.

I agree. I won't be playing Halo 3 or Quake Wars...because I dunno. I've played 'em all before they were called Doom. :rolleyes

Not sure why this has been a common reaction. There's no way MS would've allowed it. It's like Halo coming out with an aweful framerate, it's just not happening.

:lol

It's just that after E3 of this year this forum has devolved into a place where you cannot state a legitimate opinion without being butchered by those who feel they even have slightly been offended by what you say.

.... weren't you one of the people having a go at the negative aspects of what i said about some PS3 games at TGS?!?

Lot of winners in this thread.

If you're going to troll at least troll well! If not then please go buy a copy of Kill.switch then, I'm sure Namco will love you for it. You'd think the game was a billion seller by now with everyone making these comparisons.

I'm not pointing at any particular person. Oh wait actually I'm pointing at JB1981, Quetz67, and Moderation Limited. Seriously guys you don't want the game, nobody cares, move on.

This video really reminds me why I choose the PS3 over the 360.

Sure it looks great technically, nothing to complain. But it looks so lame and boring to me. While in the trailers of Resistance (or MGS4 or Killzone 2) there is so much going on that gives you the feeling of being just a small part of something big happening, this is just like every stupid shooter where every single enemy just goes for your.

No great physics or destructible geometry on display, the environment from what I can see in this bad quality video look a little uninspired.

And dont tell me Killzone 2 is only GC and the game will never look like that. Probably too, we sure will see quite a 'downgrade' from the trailer...but even if it looks technically worse than this, it would still look 10x more fun to me (if they keep the essence of what is happening in the trailer).

Uh-huh. Sure.

I really shouldn't even be taking this bait, but you just make it too easy with this completely fanboish argument.

You do realize the type of gameplay you just described liking was pioneered on consoles by this little launch game that pretty much made the Xbox. Right? And the sequel to this franchise happens to be coming out for the 360. Yet you bought a PS3 looking for this type of gameplay? I mean that is what you're saying, right?

As far as Killzone... not only was it CG(yeah I'm telling you), not only has it been MIA for the past year and a half but have you ever even played the original? Not saying it won't turn out great...but right now....that game should not be used as an example of fun, involving gameplay when we have yet to see the actual game, let alone gameplay impressions and when the first one was did not live up to its expectations.

It's pretty freaking bad when you're using a game hyped as "Halo-killer" last generation as one of your reason to buy a PS3, when that game failed to "kill" what is an Xbox exclusive game. Beautiful.

the locust voice is kind of unfortunate. game looks amazing, though. i'm going to like the chainsaw too much.

Was Killzone even any good? I never got around to playing it. :lol

killzone would've been pretty good if it had a solid framerate -- the combat is intense and it has a strong atmosphere. the framerate really hurts it, though. killzone psp looks great.

I remeber the intro was really hot. And then the game's framerate appeared and I was disappointed. Killzone 2 has potential; Gears of War will be in stores in little over a month. Big difference.

....still has a great visual pallete though

He's playing on easy (see CliffyB demo'd at X06). On higher difficulties you won't be able to just run up and chainsaw all you want. They'll be taking and dishing out a lot more damage as well as the AI being more aggressive/tactical.

Still, you bring up the same Kill.Switch thing in every GOW thread you post in. Are you expecting to come in one and see that they to changed the gameplay?

This game is gorgeous graphically, but the animation and AI in that video are kinda average IMO. There are a couple parts where he shoots the eneimes in the leg and kills them, but they flip backwards instead of hunching over and falling down face first like you would expect. It looks really weird. AI also doesn't seem to try and move around objects. The AI just kinda stood behind the lamp post and wall while the player was on the opposite side, it didn't look like the AI tried to move around and shoot him at all, instead he just shot at the lamp post/wall.

AI wise I'm not too worried since a lot of games are put on easy mode for demo purposes, but I really hope they up the animation variety before release.

I think it looks great - maybe not this particular demo, but remembering what that E3 demo level was like and seeing how they improved the framerate, it's no doubt great. About the only thing I don't like is how your character blurts out those catchphrases "Nice", "Sweet", etc. They strike me as a bit odd coming from a huge bulking soldier.

Reminds me of Killzone every time.

People seem to be forgetting that this is still just the very start of the game, leading directly on from the E3 demo, so writing it off as repetitive or easy seems a tad premature

I get that Killswitch is a mediocre game, and Gears (by all accounts of people who've played it) is not.
The problem with Kill.Switch has little to do with its mechanics, however.

The game is average as a result of its limited scenario design. The game is a one trick pony and most of the levels just aren't very good. The gameplay systems are pretty nice, though, and Gears of War looks to play very similarly. The difference will likely come from the attention to detail lavished on everything else.

The game has come a long way, though, and it's finally starting to look solid. I can't wait to give it a shake this November.

If the firefights are dynamic, if there are a couple of cool and satisfying but not easy ways to kill off Locust then the cover-gameplay won't really get old for me. Just like in Halo 1 and 2. I play almost all my fps/shooter games with cover, I love that. The fact that this game is based around it, makes me really happy!

As much as I enjoyed GRAW, the AI was pretty bad.

But the overall experience of the game was superb, and I would say that tha AI here seems better, with some flanking moves.

That still doesn't excuse stupid AI.

I figure if Cliffy was playing on a harder difficulty, say Normal mode, the Locust would have probably shut him down a few times before that little peek-a-boo moment.

When will people learn, we will know about gameplay variety when its RELEASED. Prejudging the entire game based on a short demo is fools gold. I'll wait for final judgements when people have actually played the game.

Mark Rein on the difficulty:

Cliff was playing on the "casual" mode designed for casual gamers (i.e. easy). Always best to do that (or GOD mode) for a demo. Regardless it won't be that easy for a first-time player to take down the Locusts. I saw one of the world's top game designers play a portion of a level, that Cliff can get through in 2 minutes, and it took him about 15 minutes. Cliff makes it look easy
