Hilariously overpowered RPG party members

I was going to mention Quina. Glad OP has me covered :) S/he carries on the Final Fantasy tradition of making the blue mage incredibly overpowered.

Given how much you have to invest in Quina before she becomes overpowered, yeah, no.

Compared to blue mages in other Final Fantasies, Quina is actually quite easy to make overpowered. Eating enemies is a lot easier to do on your own without a guide than being hit by specific attacks by enemies. Especially for defensive moves where, in the other games, you would have to rely on some enemy manipulation skill to get the enemy to cast them on you.

Fucking traps, man.

Norah from Child of Light. All her attacks and powers mess with the action timeline with great success. There's a rub, of course, but it's spoilers to discuss further.

Sety from Fire Emblem 4. This could also be Arthur as a Mage Knight, but regardless anything that holds Holsety becomes insta broken. It's just Sety is the best at it.

Killey in Suikoden II becomes ungodly broken with the right set up. He is one of only a few characters who obtains all three rune slots, none of them with forced runes in them. Because of this, he can equip the Fury, Double Beat, and Double Strike runes, multiplying his attack power to astounding levels. And he is stronger in general and able to equip better items than the other two major 3 rune slot contenders, making him far and away the greatest character in the game.

More like a scripted win. He's not actually usable in anything but an un-losable story sequence and it's all to drive home "damn, this dude sure is tough"

Mewtwo, Pokemon RBY.

Oh yeah, that's a great one: psychic was already the most OP type by far, then add being the ONLY Legendary pokemon that gen (there's mew, but it's rare to have and it's stats aren't...that impressive)

Umaro from FFVI. You don't even have to tell him what to do.

He can basically solo the entire Tower of Fanatics if you put a ribbon on him.

Donnel from Fire emblem awakening

I never bothered using him in my playthrough since he starts really weak.

So when I StreetPassed someone with Donnel on their team and started a practice battle, I dismissed him as 'just another character'.

I'm not making that mistake again.

Holy crap I need to try this :)

Valvatorez from Disgaea 4.
He has an ability to absorb enemies' stats after killing them, so I just rushed through using him only while being OP.

And Laharl in Disgaea D2 has a similar ability.

Bacatta from Lands of Lore. Motherfucker is the best spellcaster in the game and has 4 freaking arms making him a ginsu death machine in melee combat as well.

This is still one the best examples of using gameplay mechanisms to portray plot elements. Sephiroth is on another level, and you know it.

I used to have one of those cheat devices that puts him in your party at the start of the game, sad that the game completely freezes after the Mako reactor.

Musashi in Shining Force 1.

Yeah, you get him at the end of the game, but he's far and away the best character on your team at that point. He obliterates everything with ease.

I tried beefing Killey up a few times and Viktor always won out over him in total damage, not that I really measured all that much. I guess Killey probably has a much better TEC stat, although I think Viktor's a bit stronger and more tanky.

Any of the three-rune characters are fantastic with that rune setup (although I swapped out one of DB/DS for a Warrior rune personally - I don't recall which, but it worked out better than the 1.5x damage taken rune).

It's great to do 2000+ damage with a crit in a game where most characters barely break three digits normally, in any case.

All the Suikoden games have a few overpowered dudes, though. 1 was the most reasonable, but 3 (claw-wielders and the MCs) and 5 (especially Georg, Richard and Cathari with the auto-berserk rune) just throw balance out the window.

Yuna from FF X if you start teaching her Black and White Magic. And her Ultimate weapon being so easy to unlock gives you "break 9999 limit" without much hassle. Her ultima and holy casts were absolutely destroying everything. She makes Lulu look absolutely pathetic because of it.

These two were pretty badass as well.

Opera gets Healing Star, which when fully powered up makes her good enough to kick Rena out of your party. Plus Alpha on One, which did 5 hits and was very spam-able.

Bowman can just spam the shit out of Poison/Explosion pills and mindlessly steamroller everything.

The best part its that she becomes more broken in the international version since Anima gains a multi hit overdrive.

The dog from Dragon Age: Origins.

A true legend.

You can't bring up Origins without mentioning the mage class in general. Cone of Cold might be the most effective spell in any game ever.

Rise from Persona 4 Golden

She wasnt that overpowered in the original. In Golden she practically makes you invincible after completing her social link. She'll stop enemies from killing you and the party, drops buffs on you and the party, boosts all out attacks, heals you, restores magic. On almost every turn.

I do agree with this. I like a challenge in an RPG, but when the only way to get any kind of one is just flat out ignoring her as a character so you don't get her social link abilities, yeah...

Gets to a point in the last fights where she comes out every round and does something.

You only get to use him at the end of the game by the time you unlock his class, but the Vandal Hearts Vandalier is the most broken character I can think of.

Man. I bought this game the day it came out and played it without a guide. I sadly missed out on at least 3-4 characters including Musashi. I will have to go back and play it again someday.

I do remember Zylo being pretty OP as well.

I remember not using summons for a while and then using that Anima Overdrive on Braska's Final Aeon. lol it felt like an end game now button. Ridiculous damage.

It has been tested to death, Viktor doesn't approach the 3-rune slot fighters in terms of damage. The benefit to Viktor however, is that he is always immensely strong and needs absolutely zero effort.

But yes, in general, Suikoden games always have secret absolute monsters, which is one of the things I love about the game. Then again, that's probably mostly due simply to the fact that there are so many characters in general, so it is much easier to have big outliers in terms of general balance

Final Fantasy 8's game mechanics are incredibly easy to exploit given you're informed how they work, Zell in this case is the easiest in regards to having an absolute damage-dealing hunk assuming you exploit the hell out of the Limit Breaks [less health = higher chance of limit break, which cancelling a turn (without actually skipping it) rolls the dice for infinite chances at getting a limit break every single turn]

Edit: More detailed info: Zell's Limit Break gives him a limited amount of time (usually around 15-20 seconds) to input specific commands to trigger moves, much like a fighting game. The timer stops when a move is being performed. Left+Right/O+X is the easiest 2 combos to keep mashing out, meaning you could mash out 2-4 of these moves per second of the limit break's time limit, something the designers probably never expected you to do.

And pretty much every other Laguz Royal in Path of Radiance/Radiant Dawn. Hard to leave out characters that are intended to be grossly overpowered.

Every element and a crazy strong AOE. Not to mention a pair of completely bonkers triple techs.
