Hiro Mashima [Fairy Tail/Rave] has a crazy ass work ethic

Amazing that he can get so much done on a series with so little impact. I won't deny that what he does is nothing short of a miracle with the amount of work that goes into making a weekly manga, but I got overly tired with the sameness of each and every arc and the manga's overall blandness. While other series seem to go on forever and have either long or drawn out plots, at least I have a sense of each arc and milestones in the story. I cannot say the same about FT. It all just mushes together.

2 problems with the last arc. Too long, and Luffy was the only one that got to go wild.

And maybe too much backstory

Agree on all counts, but I did find the backstories to be some of the best parts of the arc. Maybe doing 4 different ones was a bit of overkill.

One Piece is undoubtedly a mess in terms of pacing, but when you really do look at some of the individual parts, Oda still has it in a lot of areas. Reading the volumes, however, I found it to be more enjoyable. The biggest problem facing OP is just that the main characters are quickly becoming the least interesting people in that universe.

yeah, the polls REALLY reflect this. Oda will need to stop making new characters and just flesh out the actual cast.

Well, Luffy is still no.1 but yeah the strawhats are starting to lag behind everything in the one piece world on the "interesting" scale

It's been almost a year and a half since we've seen the other half of the crew. I mean, I love all the new characters oda comes up with, but man, he's gotta tone it down a bit.

On Fairy Tail:

It's far from offensive though. I never hated it. Just kinda fell off the boat.

FT is the perfect weekly manga that is a lot of fun.

It doesn't take it self too seriously or too goofy. It has a nice balance.

Sure the battle resolutions aren't as clever as early Naruto and the story isn't as in-depth as some of the other high profile manga out there, but the ride especially the Mavis side story and the family-friendly hype train is still a nice ride. Just when a new arc begins and it has the stench of blandness, the story will veer off and do something fun or unexpected that pulls me in.

There's thousands of manga out there that have things (like clever fights, strong stories, and great art) that I look for, but everyone once in a while I just want something light and fun and FT (with its fun fights, surprising stories, and charming art style) fits that perfectly.

Being a Mangaka is hard. I can totally understand why Kishimoto sensei ended his series. Kudos to this man for doing great job.

As far as Fairy Tail manga goes, it has its up and down's. Atleast the arcs are better paced. Looking at you Oda and Kubo. Seriously these two need to increase their pace on story lines.

I'm not a particularly huge fan of FT though I've been reading for years. I am impressed with Mashima's work ethic though. He even went to bat to get the anime adaptation back on air, or so I heard. Good for him.

He should spend that time improving the story of the series... No sarcasm. It seems like a wasted effort, unless he wants FT to come across as pure fan service with a mess of a story

I loved Rave Master when it debuted, though it didn't garner as much popularity as it should have. Humor was on point, character interactions were great and they even did the formulaic villain to hero switch well. Shame the gags in Fairy Tail are so hit and miss...

I will say that the first chapter of Fairy Tail made me believe it could become on par with other leading shounen. Yep, was a great start.
