Hollow Knight: Silksong |OT| It’s SHAW-time!!!!

I got the "bad" ending... now trying to get to act 3.
finished the mountain to get the jump.

now onto finishing all the wishes (I did most of them already thankfully)

so far, absolutely GOTY imo
Overall it's been an amazing game to play through. Perfectly difficult without feeling unfair, lots of secrets to uncover and just very fun gameplay. Wonder if their next game will be another Hollow Knight, at some point they must run out of bugs types lmao.

How was the game, from a technical bugs and balancing standpoint? Do you think this will go through multiple years of iteration where the ultimate edition becomes worth the wait? I think I played the first one a couple of years later and was better off for doing so (imo)...

The Definitive Edition of Hollow Knight was harder than the OG with a somewhat Boss Rush/Challenge mode. I wouldn't mind something like that for this game.
I believe it also added some uber bosses that wasn't in the OG. I was late to Hollow Knight, only playing it once it came to GamePass and even starting and quitting several times because the opening part of it was so slow and didn't click for me right away.

Game has a ton of bugs, but very few technical ones. At least on Series X, I never encountered any issues.

it feels very much polished and well balanced to me. I had zero bugs, and also not really any issues in terms of difficulty.
at the start of the game, sometimes I ran into a handful of situations where I wished there were more beads to collect, but after a certain point in the game I was so fucking decked out with beads that I sometimes didn't even bother getting them back if I died somewhere remote... I even still have more than 1000 worth unused in my inventory I think.
and in act 2 you have so many spots where you can farm hundreds of them in a few minutes, so even if you lose them all, you can get them back real fast.

I beat The Last Judge in second attempt tonight after struggling for an hour yesterday. Funny how that works sometimes.

0 technical bugs on my side, and it felt perfectly balanced. Game's hard, but in a fair way.

Beaten Lost Lace (Act 3) for the second time, this time with 100% completion and popping the corresponding trophy.

All in all, Silksong is a tremendous game that was well worth the wait, and currently my #2 of the year, closely behind Clair Obscur. It definitely has some difficulty issues aside from just "getting gud". More specifically, I think it has a very high difficult curve. During pretty much the entirety of Act 1, you do relatively little damage while enemies inflict relatively a lot of damage to you. Most have attacks that do 2 masks of damage, that's insane in early game. So there's definitely some balancing issues going on there, at least in the first 10 or so hours, until you find mask shards that give you more room to take hits.

More than difficulty, devs this time didnt measure correctly the right formula so that some sections don't become annoying or frustrating. It's not easy to strike that perfect balance as they did with HK Silksong sometimes feels like the punishing extra mode of a normal game.

Some enemy and bench placements are unnecesarily cruel, specially in the early game with limited traversal options.

I found early game way more friendly than HK. Like I said previously, I didn't realize that I had unlocked a way to upgrade my basic weapon until way into Act 2, so I went pretty far into the game and defeated many bosses with the same attack power I had at the start. And no one worth their gamer's badge would even think of calling me "gud".

Seriously, the main problem for me, apart from some very questionable collisions, were the flying enemies. Those flying bombers in Deep Docks can fuck off into oblivion, and generally speaking, the positioning of flying enemies during pogoing or climbing sequences in a handful of rooms is beyond infuriating, and simply unfair.

I'd say the difficulty isn't much more than MegamanX1-X3 without cheesing the bosses with their weakness. I finished the "bad" ending and I have to say it's annoying mobs still take so many hits I don't feel much stronger than just after getting the hook. The two travel systems I don't understand the point of, is it just for us to waste markers? You could just have added 2 standard ones in the large area and be done with it.

Think I'm going to give the first game a replay. Haven't done so since 2018, and I wonder how it stands against the sequel.

Plus Silksong has left me wanting even more lol. :goog_relieved:

So weird to see 100% completion, but haven't done a task shown in my objective screen.
It makes me wonder what needs to be done to get that completion.

Looking at my Journal, I have not encountered 8 bugs (226/234) and not completed 28 (206/234).

I know from reading comments here, that I still need to face at least 1 or 2 bosses.

Edit: Also at least 2-3 of those delivery wishes as well I haven't done yet

Nyleh out. She reminded me of a certain boss from Cuphead. Nice battle, on the easy side. The one right before was way harder. I beat him carpeting the floor with tacks and running like a chicken in his second phase.

That's exactly where I am now. Trying to finish her off before proceeding with I think is the final objective

Finally reached Act 3. I love these sort of "secret" parts of games, like the inverted Castle in SOTN.
Also the whole process of accessing Act 3 was cool with how it shows you the credits, and then when you go to your save file it's all covered in dark tendrils that you need to break

So is it worth it to go exploring everywhere in act 3? or should I just focusing on going towards the main objective for now?

Hmmm, 1st bug I encountered. Since I'm pretty much at the end of the game, I've been going around trying to get all collectibles and momentos. I was able to collect 1 more Rune Harp and Choral Commandment, but when I went back to my house it didn't give me credit for it despite showing on my character inventory.

Could be that after I collected the last Choral Commandment, I quit to menu instead of traveling to the closest bench. Even after using the fast travel ports and other benches, it wouldn't load into my house collection. Not a big deal as I also have several momentos I couldn't find either.

so, I apparently just first try killed the only boss in the game that has no run-back lol...

the one boss that you can instantly retry, and I don't have to retry her 😭

So I'm starting to have to explore after finishing act 2 and starting to cool off I think I am going to call it a day. Navigating the extremely huge areas isn't fun at this point, everything is still a hurdle jobber mobs are harder to kill than bosses like I am just trying to do the stupid fetch quest leave me alone.

After 101 hours for my first playtrough I am done with the game! Amazing ride
1.
Lost Lace gave me way too much trouble to beat her. I think I did 50 attempts
2.
Best boss for me is First Sinner
3.
Ended up with 97% and 57% of the trophies

PS5 vs Switch 2, I assume there's absolutely no difference in graphics and performance?

I'm in act 3, I just finished the fleatopia mini games. My god, the juggling was annoying, but I finally got it after just shy of an hour of trying. The other two weren't very hard.

I hope to finish this game soon. I love it, but I've had enough honestly. Especially with about 6 games sitting on my shelf staring me in the face everyday that I want to get to. So many games came out the last few weeks and I want to get to them. I've put 85 hours into this, it's time to wrap it up soon. I hope the next few days.

I'm in the same boat, it's a great game but it is dragging on at this point.

I just accepted all wishes as I came across them and finished 90% of them by accident

It's a weird game. I've played tons of Hades 2 the last days and still I think about Silksong every now and then. I get the feeling I have to go back to it sooner or later.
Yea I'm missing it since I finished it now and haven't played for a few days, so I'm listening to the ost in the car

I don't think any game does difficulty as good as this game

100% agree, and I believe all the criticism is just a testament of how bad a lot of people are at videogames.

Which is to be expected since the hobby is more popular than ever, so it's cool to have devs that still cater to people with some skill.

Fucking hell, the final boss. What the fuck is this. Her broken hit boxes and random air attacks are so annoying.

Not enjoying the fight so far, though I have only died 15 times or so. I will reach 100 before I beat her. I died as much as against Raven from Stellar Blade but that one was more fun.

Karmelita remains top dancer.

Learn the patterns, her voice lines help with that. Also try to force her parry counters, once you are able to dodge them easily you'll realize that she opens herself for taking a few hits each time she does any of them.

Yeah I thought that for a final boss it was kinda meh, the previous three were all better imo.

Karmelita remains top dancer.
One of my favs in the whole game indeed. Felt like dancing lol.

So before heading down to the final boss, I decided to look up what wishes I might be missing.

I think I've done most, but I did find one whose final portion makes Mt Fay look like a pleasant vacation in comparison.
It brings back both pleasant and painful memories of the Palace of Pain in HK.

The end of the mushroom quest?

I didn't see anything broken, just fast and hard, when I found out she had 3rd phase I was like dang this going to take awhile

Took me 2-3 hrs to beat

Yea. I just did it, but have been trying for the better part of the day. Mt Fay took longer, but at the same time I was missing double jump.

Partly had because I have the worst crest for pogo, the Architect Crest. Would probably be easier with Reaper or Wanderer, but I was using the regen tool, so needed a way to get more tools.

Yeah did the same tonight with architect healing build, that section was a nightmare

How many tries/long did it take you to complete it?

Oh so many deaths. I started the night before with a build that didn't have healing, but the annoying thing was that I had to stop and rebuild silk by hitting the worms to heal and that took too much time. The night after I went for healing build but omg the pogo jump sucks on that. I would easily say >75 tries

yea, there's that one part where you really need the pogo and becomes very frustrating when it just whiffs. I think it's proably the slowest of the pogo and also has the widest angle compared to Hunter which also has a diagonal pogo.

I think Reaper, Wanderer or Shaman is probably the best for this area, but you really need to be flawless for the platforming because there is so little opportunity to get silk to heal.

Been stuck on final boss all day. Got her to phase 3 a few times, but so much on the screen I don't know where I can move

Same. Very cheap fight IMO. I know all her patterns but it's no use because when I have the combat more or less under control, she appears out of nowhere beside me and her fucking black magic blocks me the other way. A 2-hit combo and I'm dead.

I dont care diying 100 times as I did against Vergil 3 from DMC 3 or Raven from Stellar Blade but this is just annoying. I dont want to cheese it because its a pain in the ass to farm for resources, but I feel very tempted now. It's just not worth it.

I have a ton of resources, but want to do it without resorting to them

Edit: I still might...lol

Looking at my thoughts from the original Hollow Knight, most of the pros and the tedious complaints are still all true for Silksong as well:

Got the true ending and beat the fool trial as well. Pretty much done everything and currently sitting at 98% completion. I have some random boss left and the journal to fill out.
Anyway, here are my thoughts on the game.

Pros:
  • Gorgeous aesthetic! Seriously, this is one of the most beautiful games I've played.
  • Immersive world and atmosphere (which is result of everything coming together really well)
  • Great tight combat and platforming
  • Well designed and fair bosses
  • Amazing enemy variety
Cons:
  • Poor storytelling. The lore and the world around is interesting, but I don't like the way the story is told, i.e., needing to piece together from boss fights, items, etc.
  • Tedious game mechanics. No save anywhere feature, having to backtrack after every death, not being able to change charms (loadouts) anywhere, not having map charm as default passive, far away fast travel points, etc. I feel the game's strength is the exploration of beautiful areas, and adding these tedious elements only discourages exploration.
  • Poor Pacing. It took me about 6 hours to get the first two abilities, which is when the game really opens up. Devs need to ensure the game is designed such that a few important abilities are obtained as soon as possible, and that the time it takes for that is the same for every player.
  • Minor complaint, but the controls for charged attacks could be better. Perhaps something like hold L2 to charge and then tap the attack/dash/etc button to use respective charged attacks. I mention because it becomes tricky to hold the face attack button, while also trying to jump multiple times via another face button with the same thumb.

Overall though, I loved it despite those complaints. The good stuff is just too good and I can overlook the cons. Looking forward to the content updates now. Be interesting to see what these devs do next as well.

Edit: Got 100%. And yeah, I take my time with games haha!

Apart from that, there seem to be more trolling from the devs in this one (like that boss exploding after dying and killing player, and the fight not registering as completed even though other places it does complete like in gauntlets). Or placing annoying flying enemies on hard platforming sections. The boss health also seem to be higher than it should be in my opinion.

The atmosphere and aesthetics are still absolutely amazing though. I am having the best time when I am just exploring the world and filling out the map, same as Hollow Knight. The tedious elements do try to hamper this enjoyment, but the highs are higher than the lows, especially on PC.

And talking about PC, for others that are playing on PC that want to reduce tedium, try the following mods:
- Teleport: This lets you create your own "teleport points" while you play and return to these points with a press of a button. Very useful to set points just before boss fights to cut out the runbacks.

- Bonfire Teleport: This one lets you open the map and select a bench and immediately teleport to it. Saves a bunch of time.

Anyway, I am having a great time still. Started Act 2 last night and it was great to achieve a sort of milestone in this large world.

I have restarted the game. Thanks to the maps I've made, I'm kinda breezing through it. Knowing where to go right now and where you need some later skills is tremendously useful. Upgrading your pin as soon as possible also changes things considerably. Even if it's just one less hit against some foes, it does make a difference throughout. I have less problems managing money, too, even if it's still very tight unless you farm a bit in one useful spot.

I'm also doing better overall, dying a lot less. Still, the final boss of Act 1 killed me more times than I would have liked. Its hitboxes can be funny. I had less problems with damage contact against much faster bosses.

In hindsight, it's baffling how late the double jump and the hook are found if you don't sequence break the intended progression. I've seen enough speedruns of the game that I was kinda surprised I couldn't take the upper route at the beginning of Act 2.

I realized why I had not found any nail upgrades as I was well into Act 2 and the boss healths were starting to become a little too high. Then I worked out that after freeing Bellhart, I didn't bother jumping up and checking those shops up high. And now I was able to get two nail upgrades. Should definitely help a lot now.
