Hollow Knight: Silksong |OT| It’s SHAW-time!!!!

I agree with some points here as in the rosemary economy is fucked. All enemies should be droping it instead of forcing me to rest and grind for an hour to buy a simple basic map. It seems impossible if you decide to play as usual without grinding to be able to buy common sense items. It's not a huge deal breaker, but yeah.

I've stopped bothering, after spending 500 on a key and using it I avoided buying maps or a bench and just opened up the station to move there instead. I figure eventually I'll have enough to go back and find the map person again.

I've had no issues with that, I play it like Elden Ring, by exploring as usual I've collected enough to buy everything I need besides pins, haven't been grinding even for a second.
I like that you can buy new rosary strings to make exploration less stressful.

Alright, now I'm usually close to 0 shards due to tool costs (have 4 tools now), how the tables have turned lol. Need one more mask fragment to upgrade health, bought a Fractured Mask from NPC who you can't understand, let's you survive a killing blow once per spawn, super useful. Game continues to impress at every turn, onward!

Edit: fragment found, health upgraded 🥳

Played it for almost 15 hours, explored all the zones very thoroughly. It's finally time to get to the gate and finish act 1.
The Last Judge corpse run is EVIL.

(I'm still lovin' it)

well that was 3 hours fighting savage beastfly and i still haven't beat him

maybe there's some cool power up I missed I'm supposed to have for this fight but fighting the boss in this tiny arena with him infinitely summoning in 3 dudes is a pretty bad time

I beat him earlier, took about 15 tries, you don't need anything special, use your tools and save your silk for healing. Let him kill his minions with his drop attack.

I stopped to watch a football match but I haven't seen a rosery in hours. I'm fighting Sister something and I died because she fell down dazed and landed on me, but I have no maps nor benches, because there is nothing to buy them with anywhere along that path. I could literally give up and go elsewhere and not be punished because my corpse is skint.

That fight was a real bitch. Hardest one up to that point by far. Some tips that worked for me….

When he does the head smash, you can get two hits in. Get him right when he smashes, and if you're quick you can jump up and up attack him again before he smashes again. You also can get several attack in after his ground level charge forward attack. Space yourself next to the wall he's about to charge so that when you jump you're right behind him then have at him.

Your focus should be on killing the mobs as soon as they spawn. Focus less on hurting him and more on eliminating them. You'll get distracted if you try to do both and get punished. Try to save your silk as much as possible to spear them, especially the big guys….and hope he crushes some of them during his head smash attacks.

Once you learn his pattern, the only thing that really makes the fight so frustrating is the mobs. Don't know if you've beaten it yet but good luck!

Some more thoughts after a few hours in Act 2: the game gets much better in terms of environments and atmosphere which was one aspect that kind of disappointed me, the magic of discovery of Hollow Knight kinda wasn't there in Act 1 because a lot of areas have similar themes to the first game's zones and I found the music kind of forgettable with the exception of the
Blasted Steps
which were amazing. It gets much better thankfully. Also I fought what was probably my favorite boss of both games and one of my favorite bosses ever. Really well done gimmick.

Sadly my biggest issue with the game is still there: terrible rewards for exploration and even for beating bosses for that matter. It's not just that Hornet's core abilities are hours apart from one another but even health and damage upgrades are incredibly rare and when you find something that could be useful it's gated behind a fetch quest which only adds to the feeling of content being stretched too thin.

Pollip flowers get, now to deal with this Widow, think it might be the toughest fight yet...

Edit: lmao, was feeling myself for a second there *sigh* 😂

I feel like I'm just exploring to unlock fast travel points. You get nothing interesting ever lol. Wow now I have 150 beads! Theres a bench and fast travel, back down to 40 after that secret that seemed so cool.

In Greymoor now and now I remember why the first game ended up feeling like a mega slog to me.

I literally had to go back to Greymoor to farm. This is boring rather than difficult.

Lack of rewards from bosses and upgrades feels bad. I feel like bosses should be dropping Silk Hearts, Mask fragments, heaps of rosaries, ability upgrades or something. Instead you get nothing.

Other games in the genre either have level ups that increase HP/MP or you find stuff like Energy Tanks from Metroid or Missile expansions to use your secondary weapons more.

I think for a great while I'm going to be farming Rosary Strings and just stockpile them.

Completed my first run. The final boss was really awful in my opinion, it felt more obtusely difficult than any other boss in both games. I really hate when games make me as frustrated as that.

Overall though, that aside I really loved the game. It's special and you can tell how much TLC went into this. For $20 I just cant praise it enough, if you are on the fence just support these legendary devs. They deserve every penny.

how does it compare to other metroidvàias ? (Nine sols, Blasphemous, HK 1?)

I'm loving the slight uptick in challenge from HK. The early parts here are phenomenal and a step up in every way from the original game.

I also really like the approach to story telling this to around and having a character that speaks.

The fighter merchant is totally singing in swedish "Jag älskar dig" (I love you) with a drunk southern dialect lol

About how long did it take you to beat?

Still in act one, but so far there are too many bosses that rely on spawning mobs to amp up the difficulty. I don't remember this being a thing in the first one, at-least not to this extent. It's cheap and makes the victory feel more luck based and less rewarding than good old pattern recognition. Don't like that at all. Currently on the Sister Splinter boss and it's fucking infuriating. A fun gimmick ruined by unpredictable mobs that act randomly.

Working through act 2 and honestly it feels better than act 1. Like act 2 was the point where they realized it wasn't dlc anymore so more effort went into everything. Areas are more interesting, finding new stuff, new paths, etc. I think they need to revisit act 1 for general balancing and maybe move some upgrades a bit earlier in the game. And put some better boss runbacks. Act 1 final boss runback was just stupid.

As a Dark Souls vet, I welcome shitty run backs! Bed of Chaos anyone?!

I do agree with some of the complaints I see here. The damage just seems off. It feels like literally every boss takes 2 health points on damage and are just damage sponges themselves. I really don't mind the game being hard (I 100% the first one) but at times, it does feel a little cheap.

Currency also feels off. Yea, there has been a couple times where I needed to farm for beads but nothing to crazy. I guess my issue is I've had full 400 shards for like 95% of my playthrough so far. Maybe that changes as the game goes on but it's just odd as hell.

Im not even sure how to explain this, but I think this game has the best sound design, like ever. Something about just hitting metal or enemies just sounds perfect. It's something that consistently stands out and I'm the type of guy who rarely notices or cares about those type of things. High high quality game, pretty crazy they charged $20 for it.

I tend to stay pretty high on shards as well even with higher caps and using the knives more liberally on the plethora of flying assholes. You don't have enough tools to burn through them unless you're emptying them constantly and even then benches are far enough apart that you're not really refilling all that often either.

Cool. A ton of currency stuck in an asinine lock-in challenge room.

It's been a while, it really has, but this one might do it. Full rage quit uninstall on the horizon. This game has been absolutely grinding my fucking gears with all the cheap gotcha design elements combined with not giving any health or attack increases. I get it it's totz piss easy for some of you, like every game, but this has been a total chore and frustrating as fuck for the past few hours for me. Heavily reminds me of From's recent development where whatever is difficult is good, no matter what it is.

Trying to remain an adult but holy shit, I just wanna bash this game so hard right now lol

clocked just over 23 hours. at least 3 of those spent trying and failing to kill the final boss. I should add that I have speedran hollow knight probably around 100+ times, so this isn't quite a 'typical' time I would expect from most.

I use sub weapons constantly during the "stuck in a room with a ganksquad" moments. The spiny traps Hornet used as a boss in the first Hollow Knight are particularly efficient. It made my life so much easier, I'd rather not think about dealing with some of this horseshit with my dinky sword only.

Just beat
The Judge
and aside from some SUPREME BULLSHIT right at the end (that killed me) it was the best boss so far for me. Every time I died I knew it was my fault and not some rng/annoying add/body collision nonsense. I really hope there's more bosses like this further in, because the bosses in this game really hasn't impressed overall.

Call it cope or call it whatever but I'm dying to these bosses because I get bored and my mind wanders to thinking about other things about 30 hits in. Then I have to slog through some screens dodging spikes or a pointless enemy, wade through p1 and then die because I'm thinking "why is what could have been a good game this lame" as an off screen ball is spawned into my face.

I've watched a game of League 2 football and England vs Andorra today as something better to do with my time even though I've complete Hollow Knight.

This game is fucking hilarious. Now the boss has no cooldown on attacks that do 3 masks and 2 in quick succession. But no upgrades, no leveling, but runbacks to the boss even though there is literally nothing to do. In Souls I get it because I can choose to level myself. Here it's just rote repetition because Souls does it and it's hard so therefore it's good and must be in the game. Fuck it I give up. Enjoy bros I had some hours of fun with it but when I had to catch my arm to not throw the controller across the room, it's time.

There's an early boss (5th, I think) that has no bench near it and the path is filled with some annoying enemies very hard to avoid. Atrocious decision with this one, extremely frustrating. The boss is fucking annoying too. The worst so far.

This is what i expect after a few good hours. Getting to that ant area already had a noticeable increase in difficulty, i cant imagine later parts.

Its a solid game though. Im waiting for the difficulty mods honestly.

good you gave in now because some of the late game bosses would absolutely clap your cheeks then

Damn that sounds ominous. What's so bad about the final boss without spoiling too much? This is what I feared, that the endgame would devolve into "modded radiance" tier of retarded difficulty.

"Grind for an hour to buy a simple basic map".

A map for an area is 50-80 beads. I get that many from 5-10 enemies. Since when does this take you an hour? I can harvest 500 beads for a simple key in about 20 minutes of grind, given the proper area.

A decent little grind for early game is at halfway home. Rest at bench, run 2 screens right, kill the 3 mobs for ~25 beads, run back and repeat. Not a bad idea to do this for a bit and turn them into a few bead chains you can pop if you find yourself low and want to unlock a bench or fast travel.

You can really hit a wall in this game but, thankfully it has many other paths to explore and get better.

The game is growing on me, to be seen by end game how I feel about it all.
