Home Beta Talent Show

It appears there is a Home Beta test talent show scheduled for tonight at 8pm EST. There are a few people in the central lobby and I assume this whole gig has been planned by home members. Is this ps3's version of second life?
 
Well it's a talent show planned and hosted by the home beta testers. So far everything is taking place in the central lounge and a crowd of about 20 has formed. I'm not sure how they will display their talents but it seems like an event planned by the beta testers.

This isn't the sort of thing I would stay in on a Saturday night for.... but I'd constantly check in on what was happening via that HOME 'thru mobile phone' Java application that Harrison showed off at E3.

And then, when I was constantly checking my phone all my friends would ask what I was doing and I would say that I was texting this new girl I'd started seeing.




Shameful.

VR. It's only going to get better, not worse. Especially if they throw in a Second Life style editor and start doing other stuff with it like creating in-game commerce. It's going to be craaaazy.

LOL... The show is beginning. I feel like I'm at a sony press conference and I'm updating via blog. I will update with performances, etc... If i'm not too lazy.

There is some chick name stonecreek1 doing stand up comedy right now. One of her funniest jokes is to attract men she wears a perfume called new car interior... So far she is the one performing. I guess these segments are going to be 5 mins... I'll keep you all updated.

Edit: now she is doing top ten reasons you're in Home Beta...

Number 9 being you have gender issues. pretty funny.
 
Okay, there was a few performances, mainly stand up with no mics. Finally, someone with a mic went up. The terror, he sang it's raining men. Surprisingly, no one left... okay. they are jeering someone else to perform.

Seems like they send out new invites in the middle of each month with last time being E3 time. Also, Phil said in a recent interview that Home would be in it's final stages of Beta before the end of September which means another update is coming soon I guess.

added non-game content which also doubles as a social hub for PS3 players, will also be used as an interactive PR tool to promote new games, and will be used as a virtual online mall. Ultimately, it`s to give you something to do between games - so it'll be pretty handy for the next year or two.

I see what it`s supposed to be, i just think people are being overly optomistic about what the tools impact will be.
 
Well it's been done for a while. Stonecreek1 won. There was dancing afterwards, someone being a DJ playing wack pop music. It's was pretty organized. It ended maybe after about 45 minutes. Oh yeah, there was a race to see who can run from one end of the central lounge to the other... MASS FREEZE

the whole point of home is to give some more value to the ps3. something else to do when you dont feeli like playing games

Home might have some neat stuff...but a talent contest?

It's whatever you want it to be.

It functions as a game lobby, so you can hop right into a game with your friends.

It functions as an online gaming center, with bowling, pool and chess, etc.

It functions as an online virtual hub to do crazy stuff like this with complete strangers.

Or you can forgo all that and use the Home tech on the XMB, much like XBL.

So I guess the answer is...not really.
 
Couldn't we just do comedy routines on GAF? It would be essentially be the same thing, right?

It's different than Second Life but it shares many principles of course. Second life, the pc application that it is, has much more freedom in that you can bring up your console and change the engine code, create new emotes, 3d chars, buildings, towns... it's open source and total freedom. Home is not like that but then again Home doesn't look like a 1st edition EverQuest spin-off either. Home is a platform initiative that brings together everything that has to do with it's platform (you can still just use the XMB if you so wish, relax).

but isn`t the major issue with Home going to be that it is effectively a closed social network? That is - it`s basically going to be all the Sony fans together online, which misses what makes other social tools offers? I know that Home is going to other platforms, but who will chose Home over established other brands on PC?
 
First of it's quality. People will say Wow when this releases.
Regarding fan masses, I'm pretty sure not all SingStar customers, Sims users or whatever else, I'm pretty sure not all of them came from a hardcore background.
And in any case, what's wrong with having gamers in there in the first place?

I assume it's more built for existing PS3 players. I can't see anyone buying a ps3 for Home.
 
On the technical side of things... I'm assuming there's going to be limits to the amount of people that you can have in one place at once. Are we going to be picking "servers" to make sure our friends all end up able to interact?

Obviously that also leads me to wonder how the broadcast events will work (wollan gave an example of Jaffe giving a press conference in a home space). Interesting stuff.

You keep thinking that Home is a product, like Second Life. It's not.

And the whole closed social network argument is silly...Xbox Live is completely closed, and you can only play with people that own 360s. What's wrong with that? Home is closed off to anyone without a PS3...yeah? And?
