Home Beta Talent Show

64 people per lobby (room). 16 people max in apartment.
Obviously there will be tons of copies/'dimensions' of each location.

I'm not going to break my NDA and talk about (non disclosured) features but cool stuff happens.
I know of a fellow NeoGAF tester who had a round of bowling with the Loco Roco director prior to the announcement of the game,
the director revealed to him that the unveiling was right around the corner for example. Cool stuff.

You keep thinking that Home is a product, like Second Life. It's not.

And the whole closed social network argument is silly...Xbox Live is completely closed, and you can only play with people that own 360s. What's wrong with that? Home is closed off to anyone without a PS3...yeah? And?

Wollan however seems to think people are going to buy PS3s specifically -for- Home. Which would class it as a product like Second life.

Anyways, people buying a PS3 specifically for home is something i just can`t see happening given that the networks closed nature - "why would someone chose home in that case over any of the alternatives?" is my point... and why would people buy a PS3 specifically for that purpose?

I'm not sure what you mean with closed off. What is not closed off?
You need a device to enter whatever community and for Home it's a PS3.

... and what language was this converstation conducted in?
English. I believe it was the game director, it was someone high up at least.

... vs. a PC for Second life, Myspace etc which most people (non-gamers and gamers alike) are infinitely more likely to have. On the theme of the PS3 use of Home i certainly see the appeal and the attraction and there are a number of interesting things that can be done to promote games/social gaming... but for people outside of PS3 looking to get into a social network, i don`t see people buying a PS3 specifically for a PS3 which you mentioned you thought people would do in the past.

Well for people to buy PS3's for Home alone there has to be word of mouth and there has to be branding. Sony would be foolish not to market this and to keep marketing this going forward. Word of mouth & install base obviously takes time so you won't see people pick up a PS3 for Home this year but I think rumblings will start to spread good next year.

Home has so much potential it is unbelievable. People (including Sony) who cannot see (or exploit) this service do not recognize the power of YouTube + Second Life + MySpace rolled into a ball.

I agree with Wollan's sentiments personally, I think Home has huge potential and has _potential_ to sell PS3s. It all depends on how much motivation Sony provides (exclusive content, social games (casino?) live performances etc.) for people to visit the different areas and lobby but it seems they have the right idea.

If implemented right it will definitely make the PS3 community connected and feel very alive.

It's just too early to tell to see if Sony will be able to take advantage of the potential, but I don't see how people can disagree with the amount of potential (unless you lack imagination).

I bought a PS3 right after HOME was announced. I didnt buy just for HOME (FFXIII was my biggest factor) but HOME definetely pushed me. The potential of it was so mindblowing my head was about to explode when they first announced it.

i think Home as a wider portfolio is incredibly important, but on it`s own (as is often the case with selling consoles) i`m not convinced. But definitely - a year or so from now, then Home could well be something that swings people to get a PS3 rather than a rival console. I still remain unconvinced by the non-gamer catchment though :D

Home will have a Myspace sort of website going up in time for launch for everyone to take a look at (viewable from any browser).

They will also release a java application for mobile phones in time for launch.

Home has already sold me a PS3 so...

The first time i actually considered buying one was at GDC when Home was first revealed. This thing has potential to be one of the biggest things in console history. And the best thing, you know 3rd parties are gonna join cause its has major publicity opportunities, and if some join, the others don't wanna fall behind. My main concern is if Sony has what it takes to supply the demand (in terms of servers and stuff)

I've heard that Afrika is suppose to be an extension of home where the home user and other people that have purchased Afrika travel there for a wild safari. A vacation away from home, I presume. That tidbit was mind blowing enough for me to consider purchasing Afrika if it truly will play out that way.

Spaces by individual publishers and devs can & will be hosted by themselves. Sony will just manage their own spaces and overall infrastructure (and whatever contract job).

Pretty much anything you've heard on Afrika is not true, since nothing has leaked out yet. :(

What? Thats awesome! (if true, then again we know sh!t about it)

Who is developing Afrika? Sony Japan or Sony Europe?

What I would love to see in home as far as the cinema area, would be some fantastic shorts, created by game developers that tell the story of their game i.e. like Heavenly Sword would be cool to go to the theater and see cool episode of in CG/FMV a great story by Ninja Theory. This could be the place where a developer could tell his story about his game with no HollyWood influence. Kojima, could do some fantastic work and it would probably be great to bring the whole story together. I'm willing to pay a small fee for such a episodic content within home lets say a good feature of about 30mins I'm willing to spend .99 cents. That fee will make me feel as though I'm getting it for free and would probably watch it numerous times if the story is good.

The visuals could be in anime style, cg/fmv style or the simpson style as long as its cool and entertaining with great story telling.

Heh, i came up with that :p But it's mainly wishful thinking. I added 2+2 together when i saw the final scene in the last trailer, where the Jeep appeared, the guy in the Jeep looked ALOT like it could be an avatar from home. I mean... an headcap in Africa? :p

Then i started thinking of all the interviews with Phill Harrison about Afrika. It really does make sense. We'll have to wait and see ^^

So, wasn't Open Beta going to be in July, or when??? When is it released?
My personal guess is that the open beta will come up in September. I'm guessing they want to release the 'final test version' before letting all those in so they don't have to re download whatever.

one thing im confused about home is that at E3, I think I heard Phil say that people will pay to get items in their virtual house. Did he mean real money to buy fake things in Home?

Yes? It's just like Second Life, in this regard.

Ok not totally related BUT:

Home is officially the nerdiest thing I have ever seen.

Proof: http://yourupload.com/fh/download/1776/MOV00004.3gp.html (It is a 3GP video).

Friend of mine send me this video, he was bored last night and so they did that. Seriously. Wtf. Yes I allready called him pathetic and a loser.

(anyone know a better filehost?)

That's a fairly decent filehost already.

And I couldn't believe what I was watching...

but isn`t the major issue with Home going to be that it is effectively a closed social network? That is - it`s basically going to be all the Sony fans together online, which misses what makes other social tools offers? I know that Home is going to other platforms, but who will chose Home over established other brands on PC?

Isn't second life all PC fans?

I think Home will be paid for through ads, and microtransaction.

Say, a bigger apartment for $5.

The items are optionals, but the ads probably isn't.

Of course, you don't have to pay for it if you want to use home for its functions, like, joining a game of Resistance with 15 of your buds in your apartment.

It's completely optional, so no. Some people are into this sort of thing; others are not.

Personally I think i'll probably set a $10 limit for myself on stuff to add to Home and that'll be it.
