Chinese Movies helps a bit with 160 titles, but you have to filter out the artsy crap or boring Mando Epics.

I'm sure more are there too.
A lot of the Miramax titles are actually nice transfers done for Kung FU HD, rule seems to be if it didn't have a DVD or theatrical release, it's likely to be a nice transfer and possibly subbed.

Yea they also got Tiger Cage 2 on Netflix

My one wish is for Criterion to put out a top quality blu-ray of The Mission. I know it's a long shot, but still...

MovieManos > GunManos

The only thing I can think of to add right now that hasn't been mentioned is "Election" directed by Johnnie To.

MovieManos > GunManos
But where does WuTangManos fit in?

Yeah, I was originally planning to go themes or people day to day and To is on there, but with the OP from Sleeping Dogs linking here and the OP'er being banned (and thus no updates to it). I figure free flowing is good. One thing

Election is a really good film, second one too. I actually did a paper for my MA relating Election to following the works of Machiavelli's The Prince. For shits and giggles in my presentation I picked the very end of the first movie as the clip to show. lol

By the way those movies have pretty cheap Blu-rays out at DDDhouse and Buyoyo.com and it's worth mentioning things released by Panaroma had English subbed extras as they knew To's fanbase would be more likely to get it vs imports or boots.

I also think Breaking News and it's tracking shot deserve some love. It's not the best movie, but it's enjoyable. Richie Ren was pretty good in Punished (Milkyway, but not To)

On the subject of To what the hell was with his choice of music for The Mission. It pissed my wife off so much. lol

For Milkyway fans there is a comp, once cd of vocal themes and one of instrumental theme s, it may be out of print, but it floats around....nope it's still in stock for 29.99

Also the Hong Kong Film Archive has a lot of English text books on HK films. it's how I got Cheng Cheh's biography (though sadly it lacks his film reviews he wrote that's in the Chinese version) ordering was at least 5 years ago a bit wonky, but well worth it.

I need to create a proper OP at some point, but I suck at that (look for the Fist of the North Star game OT I did once lol). Anyone good at photopshop and all that spiffy stuff want to help? I can include info on where to get things (legally), information on formats, and other stuff like the HKFA books.

Odd request, but can anybody identify a HK gangster movie from a brief description of two scenes?

1. Man gets crushed under car park entrance/exit shutter gate while being pursued by mobs (?), friend gets away.

2. Surviving friend goes to a hospital in the final scene with a sawn-off to finish off a mob boss (?) in intensive care, not sure if he actually does.

Thanks!

Hmm, that seems oddly familiar. Can you recall anything else about it? An actor, hell was Shing Fui On in it? I mean that doesn't narrow it down but it's a start.

The man getting crushed/stuck under the shutters was pretty young...

There's also a scene where the surviving partner has his wounds treated by a woman while they watch the news (possibly of his friend's demise) in a safe house out in the countryside of HK.

The sawn-off finale has a ankle high camera shot, showing his legs and sawn off, walking through the hospital. Camera shot is following. I'm pretty sure the mob boss guy is in on life support/in a coma.

That's definitely all I can recall. I expect it to be a late 90s film, but can't be certain.

Let me ask around I know some people who might now.

GWG: The Girls With Guns Genre

Take your typical Hong Kong action film, take the budget down a notch or two, add in some lovely ladies, and keep all the requisite Hong Kong energy and you get my favorite Hong Kong subgenre. Your maidens are Moon Lee, Yukari Oshima, Nadeki Fujimi, Michiko Nishiwaki, Joyce Godenzi, Cynthia Rothrock, Carina Lau, and Elaine Lui

The Angels Trilogy:

Angels a.k.a. Iron Angels a.k.a. Midnight Angels

This is currently in my top 10 favorite Hong Kong films list. This is a true blitzkrieg of fantastic jaw-dropping action that stands the test of time. If you don't fall in love with Moon Lee, then something is broken inside yourself

Final fight(if you positively, absolutely have to watch this first, go ahead):

Angels 2:

The angels go on vacation in Southeast Asia. Things couldn't possibly go wrong.

Angels 3:

This is most notable for Alex-Fong-on-a-jetpack, but it offers much much more. Considered the weakest of the three, but with that said there's still plenty of value in the movie.

Speaking of triad films, I have to mention 飛砂風中轉 or Once a Gangster which was a parody of sorts of the genre with a nostalgic twang, reuniting the Young and Dangerous lot.

I think you can gather the tone of the movie from this MV: MV1
and the Chow Yun Fat song from which the movie got its title.

MV2 Cantonese rap. Sleeping Dogs reminded me of this actually, wish it had some things like this as the title song.

Obviously it isn't a classic like even the recent Election movies. It even borrows the plot of the Dragonhead Baton, but where none of the young guys wants the responsibility and wants to get rid of it. Some twist on Election's social commentary on HK. You guys steep in triad movies should find some enjoyment in this. Another film that runs in the same vein as this is Gallants - 打擂台, which does something similar, maybe better, with the kung fu genre, featuring Teddy Robin.

PS I thought Jiang Hu was a big disappointment, style over substance.

Gen X

Trust no one. Eat steaks.
When I was in the UK about 6 years ago I rented Ong Bak Special Edition and on the second disc it had a plethora of movie trailers from the Honk Kong scene. I wish for the life of me I could remember what ones they were, but I do recall being impressed by most of them and wishing they were available at my local shop. Never did think to write down the names.

No :( I haven't watched too many triad films in the past few years, there're just so many of them, I watched a lot of those 90s ones:

Haha, Sleeping Dogs also got me thinking about HK cinema. Most of my exposure to HK cinema is Wong-Kar Wai, but I have some of the more famous HK action movies (Hardboiled, The Killer etc.). Are there any other good crime dramas that aren't necessarily crazy action flicks, something closer to Infernal Affairs?

Is there any modern HK films anymore on the level of action gun play fun of the old era?

Once a theft

A romantic and action packed story of three best friends, a group of high end art thieves, who come into trouble when a love-triangle forms between them.

Director: John Woo
Writers: John Woo (screenplay), John Woo (story), and 2 more credits »
Stars: Leslie Cheung, Yun-Fat Chow and Cherie Chung | See full cast and crew.

IMO, this movie shows, at its prime time, HK film can really teach Hollywood one trick or two.

Just finished Sleeping Dogs and it's put me in the mood for some old school triad flicks.

Time to dig out the old Chinatown bootlegs and marathon the series with hard to read and poorly translated English subtitles. Bliss!
