Hopes for Uncharted 4 multiplayer

Be more like Uncharted 2 pre patch 1.05

First post strikes again!

Verticality in map design.

'Highrise' is such an incredible map, so much fun to traverse and try different tactics.

Also this. Loved Highrise because how intricate and layered it was.

I hope everyone plays it for a month and then 90% of all players bail so we never have to hear about how it was 'ruined' by a patch that the other 10% didn't like.

I am looking forward to seeing how the more open gameplay that was shown at the PSX will be integrated into the multiplayer and map design. I hope Naughty Dog introduces a proper clan system and server browsers to facilitate it. The "clan" tags they've been using so far don't cut. Uncharted TV was an interesting idea and I wouldn't mind seeing it again. The thing that I want most though is Uncharted 3's greatest addition to the franchise: splitscreen multiplayer (against other players). I wouldn't mind if they lowered the graphics and gave us 30 fps while using spltscreen. I just need it. I hope it has options for vertical and horizontal and I especially hope they don't waste so much screen space. I honestly felt a little sick playing like this.

I thought it wouldn't get mentioned for pages, let alone in the first post.

Yes pleaaaaase have split-screen. Just as an option. No "eww how can anyone play like dat". If it's not for you, then just ignore it. I love having split-screen as an option, and I was really bummed that it didn't make it into The Last of Us, even with the remaster.

Uncharted 3 was probably one of my favorite multi-player experiences I've ever had. Not sure why everyone here is so negative about it. I think I just loved the way it felt with the Uncharted third person movement.

I really hope they bring the dynamic contextual cover we saw in TLOU. I want to more free flowing and less snappy. It would make multiplayer (and the campaign) so much smoother imo.

Justin Richmond was the lead on MP for 2 and 3, so now that he's gone I am optimistic that Naughty Dog will wipe his DNA from 4's MP the same way that they wiped Amy's DNA from the SP.

I think you're assuming a lot about what Naughty Dog did with both of these people's work. :/

I hope everyone plays it for a month and then 90% of all players bail so we never have to hear about how it was 'ruined' by a patch that the other 10% didn't like.

Couldn't agree more. Other than the health change taking a while for me to get used to in Uncharted 2, I was pretty happy with all of the changes made to multiplayer. And the additions made for Uncharted 3 kept my friends interested for much longer, and despite the very vocal people complaining about why they stopped playing, both games have maintained lengthy and relatively healthy lifespans post release and active support. I still enjoy playing both games when I can.

I do hope that Uncharted 4 has, on top of a bevy of new maps, all of the previous maps represented some how. Or at least as many as possible, tweaked for 4's mechanics if necessary, because there are some really great maps in the series, some classics. Seeing maps like the Cave return with both the ice and flourished variants represented would be cool. I'd like to see loadouts return to a extent, but rather than kickbacks that provide the player with a power weapon, see those return as a free for all map pick up.

Naughty Dog has a great foundation for multiplayer to work from, in a perfect world, 4's multiplayer will improve upon the previous 2 in every way, but as long as it's as much fun as or more, I know I'll have a hard time pulling myself away from it.

Well we did see that Drake was able to crouch in bushes during the first gameplay demo. Maybe there's a dedicated crouch button now, as in The Last of Us? Or maybe it's just contextual.

  • PvP and Co-op modes (Adventure and Arena) return
  • Universal progression, i.e. points earned in co-op would count toward unlocks in PVP and vice versa
  • Sprint button return
  • Dynamic MP maps, ala UC3 (not terribly far removed from "levelution" in BF4)
  • Competitive playlists separate from recreational

Those are my must-haves. I sunk a whole lot of time into both UC2 and UC3 multiplayer and enjoyed each immensely (150+ hours into UC3). I even played competitive UC3 and was scratch, more or less.

Personally I saw the introduction of killstreaks as a way to remedy the flaws in UC2's spawn system and map control issues. I'm more for them coming back but wouldn't mind seeing ND put a focus on player skill and teamwork and do away with what is sometimes seen as gamebreaking fluff. If it is removed from PvP, it still has a place in Co-op.

It is contextual. I don't think Uncharted gameplay design would work with a crounch button.

I'm just going to put my faith in the team. They've had information overload from much of the community (I was/am a large contributor to that). I do hope it plays at a quick pace, I don't think the UC2 speed has stood the test of time. The "I want this, not that" from UC3 is well documented but it would be great if the game came with a great set of private/custom options for us competitive types.

Also....spectator mode. Please. I will keep asking, Eric. lol.

Be Uncharted 2 pre 1.05. This is obvious.

- Simplicity.
- AK and pistol starts for EVERYONE
- NO KILLSTREAK REWARDS
- SIMPLICITY
- Strong map design focused on chokepoints and many paths to those chokepoints.
- Lots of verticality, rope usage, dynamic destruction elements, throwable tanks.
- SIMPLICITY
- Every character has one liners, grunts, and call outs. None of those bland bonus skins people used to jump around with in UC2 without consequence
- Bring back the rotating objective game type
- SIMPLE DYNAMIC FUN ACROSS THE BOARD, NO TRACES OF UC3

Uncharted 2 multiplayer was insanely fun. Some of the stages were incredibly memorable. I just couldn't get into Uncharted 3's multiplayer as much, though I did play it for a time. I hope the fourth's multiplayer mode is good, it'll be nice to return to Uncharted multiplayer. Must have put like 40 hours into player mode in U2.

Never played Uncharted before but heard good things about 2's multiplayer. Hopefully they go the Halo 5 route and release free maps. Also the DLC weapons in TLOU ruined the multiplayer for me so hopefully non of that BS.

Less monkey-hopping (repeatedly jumping and changing direction suddenly as if there's no physical momentum, to make yourself harder to hit)

No locked-in kick-jump-the-wall-animation when you jump against a wall with no ledge grab above. Or when the game fails to detect a valid ledge.

Take out the aim assist, too. If it was in U2, I barely noticed it, but it was dreadfully apparent in U3. It cost me numerous kills with the G-Mal when the stupid game decided that the guy next to the guy I was ventilating needed my last kill burst instead. Fuck outta here.

but asking Naughty Dog to basically remake U2 MP is a bad idea, I don't think it holds up as a package. They experimented with a U2-esque playlist in U3 because it was requested, but no one played it after a few months.

It died after a few months because... you were still playing Uncharted 3 at the core. All that playlist did was remove some UC3 features (throwback grenades, kickbacks, power plays) and it kept some very questionable features like sprint that players still didn't want in there. And it, of course, had the UC3 health which many people who played UC2 1.04 and played Classic playlist UC3 were still not satisfied because you could still die before reaching the top of a building, got behind cover, etc etc.

And to top it off, it came extremely late into the multiplayer's life -- a full year later. If they had a playlist like that on-release, instead of the terrible Hardcore playlist, I bet the playlist would have had a much longer life and longevity to it in terms of player pool and size.

All the people who were hyped for Classic tried it for awhile, realized it still was UC3 at the core, and left all the while the people who liked UC3 and never played UC2 pre-1.05 stayed in the standard playlists for UC3.

The best thing ND could do is just create a Classic playlist (or separate mode entirely where all these settings are different with the same playlists accessible) with the exact UC2 settings: health/bullet damage (meaning hitboxes for legs, torso, and head), no sprint, no grenade throwbacks (because grenades are supposed to flush you out of cover, force you to roll out of cover for a moment), no power plays (if they come back which one hopes they don't), no kickbacks (which one hopes they won't come back), weapons laid out all over the map (aka no loadouts), and... that's about it, I think. It would drag all the UC2 players/lovers in and people who like UC4's settings can stay within the standard mode/playlists.

A split is the only way it's going to work, is the way I see it (unfortunately). I don't think ND has the balls to go "backwards" despite how vocal the community has been about how perfect UC2 MP was before patch 1.05 ruined it all and essentially went on to ruin UC3.

I loved both Uncharted 2 and Uncharted 3's MP. U2 for simplicity and U3 for variety/options.
So I don't really want much specifically from U4's MP, except for it to be as great as its predecessor's.

I hope that we won't get some of that pay 2 win nonsense that was in TLOU. Soured me on that games MP despite me really liking it otherwise.
I would like for the Story coop mode to return. I loved that. Especially on the hardest difficulties. That always lead to some tense as fuck moments.
Also the game should have at least U3 levels of health, but a little more would be better.
And bring back Elimination. My fav mode.

Can't think of much else...I'm fine with Kickbacks and the likes as long as they are balanced. I loved turning into spiders.

Really interested to see how exactly U4 MP's gonna be shaping up.

splitscreen, to the max. splitscreen campaign, splitscreen coop missions, splitscreen competitive like Uc3 (but that's about all I want Uc4's mp to have to do with Uc3's)
Hope the beta is this year
if you're getting the nathan drake collection, then it is. i'm not sure if it'll launch at the same time as the game, though.

Just get rid of the ridiculous perks and loudouts. Everyone starts with basic weapons and pistols, and each level has power weapons scattered throughout. It was simple, fair, and SO much fun in UC2 MP.

I also hope everything related to co-op is great — mini-campaigns for co-op that capture the high action of the main game would be fantastic.

The impossibly armored enemies in co-op were a pain — if I shoot a dude's helmet off (after fifty shots), he shouldn't take more bullets to the his bare skull before he dies. There have to be better ways to encourage teamwork

And ultimately, I want multi to play like the straightforward snippet of single-player shown last year. It looks significantly different from 2 or 3, yet still looks great. Any tweaks that encourage the tactics/weapons/moves shown in that trailer are fine by me. Any patches that go against (namely traversal/climbing) will be reviled

Can someone do a good run-down of the situation of Uncharted 2 multiplayer pre 1.05 patch and what happened and why the version(s) prior were superior and what went wrong with it after that?

I never played Uncharted 2 multiplayer so I'm not clued in but among GAF it seems almost universal it was the best version of multiplayer and everything after that was sub-par.

Thanks.

-Remove the sprint button
-Tone down the medals. Seriously, in UC3 they gave you a medal for almost anything and the constant sound of it was annoying.
-No P2W bullshit
-Grab the best maps from UC3 and UC2
-Remove the special loadout.

That should do it for me.

Really? I think it'd be perfect for Uncharted.

I think it would damage the dynamic of Uncharted's combat, which is the best thing about it IMO. A crouch button means a fundamental change in the pacing and I don't think Uncharted gameplay would be so good without the speed/verticality combo.

I do love it in TLOU though, but then again it is always about the combat. TLOU combat is much slower and more grounded than Uncharted's.

Since ND seems to be reading, I want to say this. Server browsers are very useful to both developers and players. I noticed in past Uncharteds, when you guys wanted to add new modes or something, you would have no choice but to add a completely new playlist that divided up the playerbase. There was also the issue of people not playing on DLC maps because the playerbase was too small (season passes helped this in The Last of Us). Server browsers would solve this completely. Players would be able to create their own public games with their own restrictions based on what they like. For example, in Killzone 2 there was the Assault class which had 2x health and ran around with RPGs. This class was banned from most games (and if not the class, the RPG was banned) because the playerbase decided that it was unbalanced. In the end, the developers made them more balanced through a patch. And as I said in the OP, server browsers make it easy to have clan matches and join new clans. Private matches are for people you already know, server browsers are for meeting new people! Please add this feature in. It will extend the life of the game (people still play Killzone 2 because of server browsers but Killzone 3 is dead with matchmaking).

Killzone Shadow Fall had a really cool feature where you could customise your game types to make things like Snipers vs Assault. I think such a feature would be perfect for Uncharted multiplayer. Imagine a game 2v2, riot shields versus pistoles or shotguns as an example. Or melee only matches. The possibilities would be endless.

Basically I want to be given the choice to decide how I want to play. The "majority" can play their kills focused games as they do in Battlefield 4 with Operation Metro (and I occasionally do :p). The "vocal minority" can play their more skill-based, tactical matches. Just keep in mind that the "majority" are very easy to please. They don't nitpick and they don't complain, they just play. Focus on the "vocal minority" and the "majority" will fall in line. An example of this is how The Last of Us was designed without Listen Mode in the single player but the "majority" used it to make the game easier. This was done in a way that did not compromise the single player experience for the "vocal minority".

There is currently only one good multiplayer shooter for PS4: Battlefield 4. I have confidence that you can surpass it and become the top multiplayer game. Good luck!

I think you mean Last of Us. I have high hopes that Naughty Dog can take what they learned from the Factions MP and apply it to Uncharted 4.

Please Naughty Dog, I beg of you!

You guys had it (almost) perfect in UC2, and surprisingly, Last of Us too!

UC3 went down the crapper because you pulled a Modern Warfare 2. Seriously, the correlation with COD is undeniable: UC2 borrowed boosters, UC3 borrowed leveled boosters and kickbacks, Last of Us borrowed Pick 10 system, which thankfully was for the better.

But Halo should be your inspiration. Arena styled MP, with basic weapons, no crazy mods or over the top boosters, with a focus on simply knowing and outperforming your enemy, knowing the map, and map control. No randomness like Quick boom appearing out of nowhere.

You spammed the hell out of unbalanced booster levels and big ass maps in UC3. The UC2 maps are such classics, unlike anything in UC3. Much better symmetry and less dead space. I was shocked that UC3 maps were so bad, and it was evident with some of the UC2 DLC too. UC2 maps were tight, symmetrical almost, and had great flow.

Health was the only good thing in UC3.

I hated loadouts (too many choices and custom attachments= balance problems, give us the basics like in a good Halo game or UC2. The Uzi was great in UC2 because it was a pickup you had to get to, in UC3 it was a loadout weapon, and with hipfiring, it became annoying very quick)

I disliked Sprint (beta sprint was good and felt like risk vs reward, post-beta wasn't. Don't really care if it's in or not, but I think it should reduce mobility like the beta)

I hated the horrendous booster-leveling and awful, awful kickbacks.

It's a nightmare to balance all that, and I don't see why you guys would want to deal with all that again. UC2 was damn perfect, minus those anti-boosters and radar b.s. that was unlocked at the highest levels.

Just... make great maps, focus on the tight gameplay, and forget kickbacks and loadouts that add way too much. Let us choose to start with the AK, or GMAL, leave the sniper as a power weapon.

I absolutely love the gameplay where you are outsmarting your opponent, where you know what weapon they have, where you control the map for better weapons, where you coordinate with your team, where you're pinned down but have great cover (without having to worry about some guy insta-spawning quick boom grenades or turning into spiders)

I feel like so many MP games are missing the point. COD focuses on Titanfall movement now and people act as if normal movement is outdated. I feel devs think that having a basic multiplayer that is confident with the gameplay is outdated too....as if kickbacks, booster leveling, etc. is needed to make a good MP.

Last of Us was such a surprise. I thought you guys lost it, but you guys proved that LESS IS MORE. Simplicity is awesome. The Pick 13 system is great, and really ensured that nothing was crazy overpowered with boosters, and the slowness of the entire game, including limiting sprint was fantastic. I didn't think you guys would go that route. I hope you have that confidence with UC MP

/rant.

no loadouts would be perfect.

but that's not the way things are going, i doubt they'll do that.

it's all about ranking up, getting your extra bonuses. you know, so when you play a match then suddenly someone can spawn RPGs.

it sucks, but this is multiplayer now :(

Let me throw cat ears on both doughnut Drake and Elena this time.
I absolutely love mp in ND games. Loved uc2, uc3 & tlou mp.

All I can say is they need to tone down with dlc and I hated the grinding treasure system in order to unlock things.

Tlou's levelling up to unlock thing is simple and rewarding.

They can get rid of the kickbacks and give us one paid kickback each game if we wish to use it. Like paid boosters in tlou.

I also liked clan system way better than Uc3 Ticket system.

Crafting system was amazing and created some intense moments in the mp gameplay. I wish they implement something like that in uc3. Im noy saying they should copy the exact thing to uc4. But something as interesting as that would be cool.
