Horizon Zero Dawn sales (sell-through) Exceed 2.6 Million (2 weeks), DLC teased

It's so nice to see a development team go way out of their comfort zone and completely nail it, hopefully it inspires more to do the same.

Also, well deserved GG, it's an excellent game, be there day 1 for any DLC. And can't wait to see where the (almost definitely happening) sequel goes too.

Goes to show how pathetic that boycott from GameFAQs and KiA was.

It also clearly shows these are small vocal minorities. People are clearly willing to buy and play games with female leads, provided the game is good. People who outcry and hate on games just because the lead is a woman is very small.

Luckily it would seem devs are taking note. Just this year we've gotten GR2, Tales of Bersaria, Nier, and Horizon all with female leads. Horizon is the only big seller of the bunch but it's still nice to see.

Does anyone know if GG have two teams? Like ND? one team making the next KZ and the other HZD2 for example. As KZ is a high seller right? I don't see them dropping it.

They did have a satellite studio in Guerrilla Cambridge before it was shut down a couple of months ago. However for Horizon's development I believe the whole Amsterdam studio was involved (250-ish people) and there won't be room for them to become a two-project developer any time soon.

I liked how you picked the best selling WRPG of all time, the best selling WRPG this gen, and the best first party new IP this gen to prove your point. Yet completely ignored all the other less than stellar performing games as well as what we had seen of Scalebound and Fable up to the point they were cancelled. MS have a long, long way to go but those two games were not going to save the day for them.

You miss the point. What I am saying is that just regular single player good quality RPG's have a very large and profitable market. They didnt need to shovel in MP or gimmicks (Kinect).

Its hard for me to imagine that if the team made what they wanted to make (they said in an interview that they wanted to make a regular single player sequel, without MP or asyncronous play or any of that stuff) to a high quality, that the game would be profitable, make money for microsoft and add to the X1 lineup.

Simply closing the studio is such a waste of potential talent. The original team wasnt even organic in lionhead, it was bought - then they got told what to do in future iterations by molyneux and microsoft.

Lionhead Studios was founded back in 1996, and in 2004 the studio acquired the rights to Fable when the studio purchased Fable developer, Big Blue Box Studios.

Big Blue Box was founded by Simon Carter and his brother Dene Carter back in 1998 with the goal to create a game that they had been planning to make since they were children. That game turned out to be Fable.

...

both brothers were asked whether they would like to do a Fable reboot or possibly, Fable 4. Simon and Dene were quick to reply to the initial tweet, with Simon Carter answering that he would love to do a reboot as there are "so many ideas" they "didn't get to play with".

Whatever causes them to keep doing it is irrelevant to the point. I was merely explaining the different priorities of the major three. As a gamer, I don't care about their bottom line, but only how their various outputs impact the type of games I get to play.

Nintendo does lots of experiments and take shots at types of games Sony and Microsoft would never try or sent out to die.

You know that.

Guerrilla and Horizon thoroughly deserve this success, and much much more.

This game has easily been my favorite game of the generation so far, and thats not something I expected to happen lol

I am amazed some doubted it was gonna be successful.

Its an exclusive on the market leading home console right now. By default it should sell good. And its a twist on the dinosaur theme?

Sell well sure... HZD did not sell it sold incredibly well. Again not much else in Sony's portfolio comes close as a debut for a new IP.

This is great news. I try to avoid full price games in Canada but I couldn't hold off on this one. It's a fantastic game and deserves the success.

Congratulations to GG on the new IP taking off and looking forward to Horizon 2!

That sure helped Gravity Rush 2. Nothing is guaranteed, but people saying (hoping?) this game would flop were talking out of their ass. Game showed very well since the reveal and got nothing but praises for its gameplay. The worst were the people who kept dismissing because they saw an equivalent of ubisoft towers.

LBP, Sing Star, GoW Remaster, The Order, Driveclub initially

good games that fit the current taste, sell well
bad games, the dont fit the current tast dont sell well
so no, not by default. but it's easier to sell well

Really hope the DLC expands on the overide mechanic, I'd love to be able to take control / ride a Thunderjaw into battle, that would be fucking awesome.

Congrats to GG! I was completely blindsided by Horizon, and even after getting the platinum a few days ago, I'm still craving to return to the world and to those robots/combat. Day 1 for any DLC/Expansion, I'm in legit withdrawal.

Those are some good numbers, but Sony hasn't exactly been putting out many great new first party IPs this gen, so that one statement doesn't really mean too much. Glad Knack is no longer Sony's number 1 though.

I mean, it's in no way a given otherwise The Order 1886 or Tearaway Unfolded would have been big hits too.

This sounds suspiciously like "Don't read to much into (insert game title)'s sales".

A great game will sell well regardless of competition. It's up against Zelda and Mass Effect as a new IP and has managed to break records.

Hmm? We know what it sold, they released the exact number, so what's there to read into? It did well, but they should have just left it at that.

Those sales numbers are disappointing.

Best game of this gen for me at the moment. I think it should sell better.

Well deserved. It's got good and varied combat, intriguing setting and story, and a great audiovisual style. It's one of the few open world games I've enjoyed.

Congrats to GG. Deserves every penny.

I'm still early in the game, but I haven't had this... good... feeling in a long time.

I felt it for Ocarina of Time, for Resident Evil 4, for Metroid Prime, for Mass Effect 2, for Xenoblade, and now for Horizon.

I'm so thrilled it exceeded even my loftiest expectations.

Nintendo does lots of experiments and take shots at types of games Sony and Microsoft would never try or sent out to die.

You know that.

Like it's not worth getting into list wars, but suffice to say Nintendo is generally focused on their family friendly output for "all ages" - this is not an insult - and primarily dominates their content with mascot fare (read: Memorable mascots are their cornerstone; the Inklings just recently joined that pantheon) that, even when experimental, tends to star one of their best selling characters. Yes, there are exceptions I can list for you now, probably dozens over time. We're just speaking about a general company philosophy. For example, we know Nintendo was involved in publishing Eternal Darkness, but you can count of one hand the amount of M rated games they've actually released over the years. It's not the rule, it's the exception.

Similarly, while Sony dabbles in mascots - Ratchet, Crash and Sackboy - they are far more likely to enter experimental genres, dance all around the ratings system with their content and provide content that tends to be heavier in story content or dramatic flair. Just like Nintendo has exceptions to their general philosophy, Sony has exceptions to theirs. Neither changes how they typically operate.

It's OK to recognize the way companies operate. You can love them just the way they are. I know I do.

Not bad for the first 2 weeks, but it needs to continue to sell to be actually good numbers, at this point there is a good chance it isn't all that above the recouping point.

The game cost over 45 million € to be made https://www.nrc.nl/nieuws/2017/02/2...tie-van-nederland-is-gemaakt-6962270-a1547873 , this almost certainly does not include marketing budget which as a general rule is a very good % of the development budget, public rule of thumb is marketing = dev budget.
If we assume that was true for this title (it can be less it can be more), that would put it at roughly 97 million $ as currency conversion stands today (€ was stronger when this game started), so lets call it 100 million to make math easier.

If we assume all these 2.6 million copies were sold at 60$, and that Sony made a 40$ return on each copy, that is a 104 million $ revenue, or a profit of 4 million $.
Although ofc from now on it is all profit, and while console games tend to have short legs, this one being a sony exclusive should still sell a couple more million copies, so long term it should make a nice return, probably enough to pay for the sequel.
Not that it matters all that much to Sony ofc, from a business perspective the money they make from their games is chump change, it is all about growing the platform so they can take their cut from games released on their consoles, and get money from the online subscription.

It does however go to show why outside of some stupidly big titles like halo (which will probably stop being exclusive and show up on PC), publishers are not really doing AAA platform exclusives anymore (those the division sales jesus christ).

It'll continue to sell fine. It's getting great word-of-mouth (from me included) and Sony is going to keep pushing this game alongside PS4s and Pros all year through the holidays, no doubt.

Congratulations Guerrilla! This is the reception I wanted them to have back during the KZ2 days and where I hoped Shadowfall could land them at, but that wasn't meant to be. I'm glad they've proven what many have known for a long time now, they're a top tier developer when their games are judged justly without the stigma of being an anything "killer". Once again, congrats.

Absolutely fantastic news!

Just platinum'd and 100%'d the game last night.

They deserve all the praise and sales they are getting and more!
