I'm sure I've missed some.

Both console have decent horror games, but IMO PS2 wins, it had more games I consider worthy of the word "horror"

I'm in a horror game mood, what would you guys recommend? Which game did you enjoy the most? What did I miss?

What happened: The cost of game development rose while horror gaming remained a niche market. Publishers were unwilling to spend the money required to make a 360/PS3 horror game that would appeal to such a limited market. :(

I don't think anyone would disagree with that. This generation in general has been pretty poor when it comes to actual horror games. Action games with horror elements are another thing.

Thankfully we might be getting a new horror game from Toyama (Siren/Silent Hill creator) in the future. And it'll be on the PS4. :)

Yeah I'm hoping that turns out good.

I'm really hoping PS4 will be the comeback to survival horror games we all love, the improved graphics will be a great bonus! :)

Fatal Frame - Now owned by Nintendo, and I'm guessing it's sorta mishandled because 4 never got localized, 2 only got localized in Europe, and Spirit Camera was underwhelming.

Silent Hill - Lost its identity after 4.

Clock Tower - Dead thanks to Capcpom.

Resident Evil - Not really a horror series anymore. RE:R is the closest.

ObsCure - The latest game became a non-horror jokey downloadable game.

I really do hope with Sony hitting it off with making development easier, we'll get more horror games from indie companies (and Japanese companies).

Wow yeah, such a disaster.

Coincidentally I just came across this, which gives me hope:

Sony kills concept approval, makes moves to get indies onto PS4

Horror was down this generation, but it is on the rise again in big part to the rise of the digital and indie scene.

Games like the mentioned Silent Hill/Siren creator game, Project Zwei by Mikami, Outlast by some of the old Mirror's Edge creators, Slender: The Arrival, etc.

Last generation of horror was fairly decent in Japan on the Wii, where lower-budget games were more plausible. A shame most didn't come to America.

Isn't there a pretty good downloadable horror game on PSN?

There's Deadly Premonition (if ever that's horror, lol) coming next month for PS3 retail and there's Lone Survivor (PS3/PSV PSN).

I'm really excited to finally play Deadly Premonition, seems more comedy/super weird than scary to me, but I've yet to play it.

You forgot the outstanding and criminally underrated Echo Night: Beyond.
Looks interesting, I'll check it out further. :)

Haven't played it myself, but heard good things about Lone Survivor
Well this thread was more about PS2/PS3, but I don't mind hearing PC/Wii etc recommendations too, it looks interesting, thanks.

I'm so glad that someone made a thread like this so i can see what PS2 horror's to get other then Silent Hill (already played all of them). I tried to play Siren 3 on PS2 but got stuck on the 2nd level (hardest game I've ever played). I'm planning on getting the PS3 version because I heard its easier, but I'm gonna try the other PS2 titles out.

Btw I personally believe PS2 won the horror genre more then the PS3. Just had to put in my 2 cents.

The combat IS TERRIBLE, but everything else is kind of interesting/campy/funny if you're a David Lynch / Twin Peaks fan. It's amazing how much of a rip off it is of Twin Peaks.

This, pretty much. Same thing happened to JRPGs, really.

STILL waiting on that console RPG Atlus. :(

Lone Survivor is coming to PS3 and Vita though. :P

Yeah I've done my research, I think I know what to expect, I'm in it for the campy weird interesting fun bits. :)

I guess you can compare it to Alpha protocol, terrible gameplay IMO, but worth playing for the fun bits.

Whaaaat? NICE!

I still say theres something there for non Twin Peaks fan.
Never watched the show or read much about it and enjoyed the game immensely.

Survival horror doesn't really exist on current gen consoles. Just like real stealth games (not many anyway), or whatever else isn't either a shooter or an RPG.

This, pretty much. Same thing happened to JRPGs, really.

Indeed! There's a few gems here and there but it sure is lacking.

Persona 5 where art thou?

Your welcome, I haven't played everything on that PS2 list, but I really enjoyed the Silent hill, Siren, Resident Evil and Fatal Frame games. Hoping to try out some of the other ones.

Can't really say I think Deadly Premonition is a horror game.

Combat is pretty bland but completely functional. Its getting some work with the director's cut coming next month too. The games biggest problem and what it needs more than anything else is real level design for the shooting segments. The game essentially just uses red walls to block of a path through already existing areas or just doesn't do much more than hallways.

Still really loved the game overall (see avatar).
You forgot the outstanding and criminally underrated Echo Night: Beyond.
Oh yes.

Its a very slow game and despite being first-person it doesn't have dual analog support but its a very unique horror/adventure game with no combat (just questing from one restless soul to the next).

Shame I can't get it to look right in PCSX2.

This thread reminds me why i want to just take a break from Current Gen/Next Gen and just play all the stuff I missed. Since a lot of it was Horror games.

Anyone have any impressions on Kuon and Rule of Rose?

I would also like impressions on these two, they look interesting. I heard that Rule Of Rose almost didn't release in Europe because you bury a child alive or something.

Ku-on is scary, freaky, and pretty difficult. I had fun with it but what annoyed me is that the main character walked so slow (I used the priestess). The game is set during the old Japanese era.

Rule of Rose was an interesting and demented concept. It was freaky but the battles are probably the worst because they're clunky and uninteresting.

Whaaaat? NICE!

They added in a lot of stuff to the PS3/PSV versions:

To top it off, I’ve secretly been devoting a lot time and resources into adding additional content into the game, initially exclusive to PS3 and PS Vita. As well as Trophies, Cross-Buy and Cross-Play support, the PS version will feature (amongst other things) 19 new items, new dialogue with all NPCs, two extensive new side quests and a brand new ‘Yellow’ ending, featuring an exclusive piece of music. We are also investigating touch control for movement and inventory use. This version really will be enhanced in every way!

Hmm sounds like I should give both a shot.
Since they just seem so outside the norm of gaming.

Yeah, it's a shame about the combat. I wish that they would've toned it down just a bit. The game deserved a lot more attention that it received. Anyone that's looking for an experience similar to Team Silent SH games should really look into that game.

This is PC related but I recently played a Korean Horror Game called White Day, I didn't complete it but it was certainly an unique experience because it's probably the only Korean game I've played, most are MMO.

Another unique experience was that Slender man game, damn that is scary with headphones on.

I didn't get to finish White Day, has anyone else played White Day?

I would love to see something like White Day come to consoles. I couldn't finish White Day because I just don't like playing games on PC. Console is more comfortable for me.

The problem I have with playing on PC is that I easily get distracted by the internet instead of playing games haha.

I'll keep my eye out for that!

Dusk Golem gave it some great praise in this thread

It's on my list of games to play.

If you're really in the horror game mood, then PC would be great for that. You already seem to have mentioned pretty much all of the good ones in the OP.

Right now the only games coming out on console that fit the survival horror feel you seem to want are: Lone Survivor, and RE: Revelations.

Since you're open to some PC mentions, have you played Amnesia: The Dark Descent? It's follow up Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs, is coming out soon.

I've probably ruined the horror part of it because I saw LPer Cry play it. Impossible for me to find that game scary now.

I played the Amnesia Demo, and yes I found it scary, the invisible thing in the water was genius. I'll see what they do with A Machine for Pigs (the name already creeps me out)

Haha I get that. But maybe at night with headphones it will still feel creepy. :)

Anyway since were talking about PC, one of my favorite visual novels is Saya No Uta, a lot of horror game developers could learn a thing or two from Saya No Uta, it has an amazing atmosphere.

I just beat the original BioShock for the first time this week, and although it was never billed as a horror or survival horror game, there are some genuine scares in there that blow most of what I've played this gen out of the water. They do a few very creative things with the lighting, sound and enemies to make it all a chilling experience in certain sections.

You should play its spiritual prequel System Shock 2. You will shit bricks my friend.

This scared the crap out of me the first time I played through it. I've forgotten how creepy that game is.

There's some good ones coming out:

Daylight
Outlast
Amnesia a Machine for Pigs
Project Zwei
Routine
Slender: The Arrival
Among the Sleep

Project Zwei is going to be on PS3/multiplat (or PS4 I guess), the rest are coming to Steam.

Recent article said that it's not a horror game, it's now a 3rd person action shooter.
