Hot Shots Golf 5 5GB install?

1 game (5GB) and Linux (10GB) with 2GB free

How does linux take 10 gigs? XP takes less than 5 right? Either way that sucks, Linux, DMC4 and HSG5 and bam no more space.

If you just created a partition large enough for the OS then you'd have no room for anything else. When you chose to install another OS, the PS3 sets aside a 10GB partition for it.

I'm pretty sure I mentioned this when I picked up MinGol 5 last summer, but here is my experience anyway...

I bought a 20GB model at launch, because I didn't like the silver trim of the 60GB model and I didn't need the wi-fi or the card slots, so I figured 10,000 yen for the extra disc space was unnecessary. I bought Ridge Racer 7 at launch, and installed FFXI on the HDD from my PS2 discs - you'd think that was about 8/9 GB. But when I bought MinGol 5, I didn't have enough space to install it, even after deleting all the movies I downloaded from PSN. Apparently the FFXI installation created a much bigger partition than necessary (10GB?) and the actual free space of a 20GB drive is more like 15/16GB for some reason (locked caching area?).

Anyway, I uninstalled FFXI and installed MinGol 5. But because I've got the 20GB model, the installation thing is a problem for me. I've read that Yakuza 3 and Lost Planet both have 5 GB installs too, though I don't know if this is final. I am planning to buy the former, and hopefully it will fit on my drive, along with the two games above. After that, I have to start deleting installs.

To those saying "buy a new HDD" - buying a larger HDD just to install games does seem a little extravagant. I can either spend 20 mins deleting+installing each game, or I can spend $150 on a large drive. Spending that amount of cash just to save a few hours over the course of this gen seems like a waste of money, personally, but the alternative is not exactly great.

Linux partition is always 10GB.

also, dude, i wasn't being serious when i posted that, i was just 1upping the guy with the absolute worst case scenario.

haha finally devs are seeing meaning in the phrase "whats the point of having standard harddrives if you're not going to use it?"

bravo, developers.
fk the haters.
NO LOADTIMES FTW

i guess ken was right about getting a second job after all?

Dear Sony:

I'm glad you've included a Hard Drive in each system, doing so makes it the one thing you didn't f*ck up durring the launch, however now with mandatory installs you've managed to f*ck that up to.

so hot shots golf 5 has no load times? confirmed?

Guys no worries, Evander trolled the shit out of the Home thread earlier this week. Dont think much of it, he started back tracking saying how he would end up buying all the extra little things. Now he's complaining about these things, lol.

Same no load times as the no load times in DMC4?

Of course... they could get a clue and ask Naughty Dog how to do it properly.

Quicker and fewer load times and all it costs me is tmp space on my ps3 hard drive? Sounds good to me.

But don't let that breath of common sense disturb the tempest in a teacup currently going on.

Sony developed HSG5?

blame clap hans, not sony.

in fact, blame camelot.

Between not being able to find a Wii, RRoD roulette, and hard drive space worries, I might have to skip this gen entirely.

I wonder how much gaming life is left in my 2.4GHz P4 + GeForce 6800GT rig.

F'real. The number of apologists is staggering.

Not everyone who doesn't have a problem with this is an apologist. My PS3 harddrive stays pretty clean since I uninstall anything I don't see myself playing again anytime soon.

Read lupinko's post on the last page. The install is not all or even largely about reducing load times. The game still has load times. For one, you have to wait about 5-10 seconds before a round. The load times are not bad for a golf game but not everything has to be black and white. Less load times is good. Mandatory installs maybe not so much, especially if part of the reason is rushed development.

In other news, I just fired up the game for the first time in months and god damn is it gorgeous.

Definitely agreed. So why do you take a personal opinion--no rumble and forced install are dealbreakers--and imply that people who disagree are part of the "'Sony-can-do-no-wrong' crowd"? I fully support your right to have opinions, but if you paint disagreement as mindless dogma, you're treating them as fact instead.

I didn't say that people who disagree ARE ALL those people, I said that those people hav e disagreed in the past.

Some one could definitely disagree for a different reason. I never said they couldn't.

Once you've had the game for a year and you want to move on to others, just delete the 5-GB data file(s). It's not a big deal.

DMC4 is an example. Once you beat it or once you feel you won't play it again, just delete the installed files.

What a piss-weak argument.

So once I "move on" from a game and delete it I can't go back to it without first deleting another game and sitting through another 20 minute install?

I'm no fan of load times, but how is waiting for an install really any better?

I'd rather wait 15 seconds 80 different times than wait twenty minutes all at once.

What a pain in the ass ... install...delete...install...delete...no no buy a bigger HDD! All install should be optional, I say.

To be fair, don/t they publish it? :P

But I agree. Sony has ZERO blame in all of this, it's all about the developers being inconsiderate to the needs of gamers.

Since i'm not horribly impatient it's not a big deal for me.

Optional installs are cool, I like putting UT3 all on my HDD for uberfast loading. Mandatory is major uncool though.

BTW what are read speeds like on the 20GB HDD?

No way. Setting aside the game to install for however long and doing something else them coming back to it and having no load times should be the ideal situation. How you would want to actually have load times during gameplay instead of getting it out of the way beforehand is beyond me.

And whats the ideal PS3 HDD? Bigger cache and only 5400RPM? (seeing as 7200 may be too hot?)

I'm the same way, the main things that take up alot of space is my Anime and Music I have stored on there. Games take up a good amount but I have alot of PSN games/PSone games

from what people said at launch when comparing PSN games... TERRIBLE

Hot Shots 5 has ~5 sec load time even with the install. Imagine how long you would have to wait without install...10-20 sec? Oh shit...:lol

Sooo... what if I end up getting Hot Shots and DMC4 at around the same time? Does that mean that 10 gigs of my PS3's hard drive are going to be locked away from me just because of these two games? If so, that's really lazy and stupid, and I REALLY hope this doesn't become a trend. An optional install for people that are going to play the game a lot is fine, but taking up a huge chunk of my HDD just to cut load screens from 10 seconds to 3 seconds is not worth it in my book, I want to jump in and play it as soon as I put the disc in the system...

I am not happy with this trend. I have a 20 gig, and my laptop's hd is full. I'm not getting DMC4 or HSG5, but this is worrisome as I won't be upgrading my hard drive on either any time soon. Guess I'll have to delete some of those South Park seasons on my PS3's hard drive.

Installs are cool with me, but 5 gigs a pop isn't going to work for me.

I'm hoping that this is the last generation filled with this much bullshit.

Don't worry, I'm sure that next Gen will come with ALL NEW bullshit.

My predictions:

Nintendo WiiToo will LITTERALLY be two Wiis duct taped together. (as a byproduct, it will be EVEN HARDER to find.)

Xbox4Ever will be shaped extremely oddly, in a way that makes it impossible to fit near any other electronics. Microsoft will ignore the various calls for a redesign for three years, and then bring out a redesigned system that is even worse.

PS4 will be prone to catching on fire. Sony will respond by playing up the "indoor barbaque" angle.)

OMG Oblivion has a 4.5 GB install and that came out a year ago. HOLY SHIT!

No 20 minute session at the beginning though...only took me a couple minutes to get started. It's like it caches in the background or something.

I don't mind installs at all, if it makes my gameplay experience even a little more seamless it's cool.

When the PS3 library grows more though...I dunno, but at least you can upgrade the HDD fairly cheap. And sit through all your installs again. Just like rebuilding a PC.

Gotta disagree with ya there. I'd rather get it all over with in one shot. When I installed Ninja Gaiden Sigma I just read GAF for fifteen minutes. Its not really that big a deal to me anyway...

I wish I had that option with my Elite, damn HD is freaking empty and I wouldn't mind not having the DVD drive spinning, even if I had to keep in the disc in the drive just to start the game from the install.

You are right about devs being inconsiderate of gamers though. HDs have a finite limit and taking up to a fourth (for the 20gigers) of the HD per game isn't cool either...

Atleast HD prices are dropping like crazy. I want to pick up a 250 GB one once they drop under $100...

If I have to wait that long either way, I'd rather do it in tiny chunks than deal with it all at once.

We don't all have that luxury, though.

Most of the time when I even have enough free time to go stick a disc in the system, I'm running on a strict schedule. Usining up a "break" in order to install a game is bullshit. I can spare 15 seconds here or there, but killing off a whole twenty minutes is something I can't deal with.

It won't stop me from getting HSG5, but it'll definitely factor into my multi-platform purchases in a big way.

It sucks that 20 giggers will have to shell out more money to upgrade HD to play more than 3 games that require 5 Gig install each...sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111

I wish Naughty Dog allowed us to install some stuff. Texture pop-in FTL.

Lol 20giggers, dirty poors. Get a good college education and a real job and you'll have enough disposable cash to actually play 5 PS3 games at once without having to worry about HDD space.

Are people serious? I can spend 20 minutes on the toilet reading the paper and your telling me you don't have 15 minutes to do a 1 time install? Give me a fucking break, this shit is old. While I personally don't care about mandatory installs, I can see this backlash hurting the PS3. People are going to blame this on Sony when it has nothing to do with them, its all the developers.
