how about an HD remake console by nintendo?

An entirely new console dedicated to games that have already been released? What could go wrong?

Like I said in a Halo 2 Anniversary thread a few days ago: HD remakes are nice experiences on occasion for people who are already big fans, and maybe a few new people who missed it the first time around, but they don't move consoles in their own.

I do too! A whole lot, wow

but...there's already hardware for the remakes to be around. 3DS and Wii-U.

I mean idk I bought StarFox 64 3D and it's my favorite remake

Yes. Great game. I guess we will probably just get a trickle of HD remakes. Maybe majors next I guess.

Just buy the original consoles and play the games on a Sony Trinitron, waiting for remakes or buying a system for remakes is pointless when the games are great anyways IMO.

That's what Wii U is.
I'm expecting more remakes to be announced at E3
Agreed, actually. I think titles like F-Zero GX and Battalion Wars and Doshin the Giant are ripe for HD remakes, and can take advantage of the Wii U's online functionality.

I think the idea is based on the fact that no one knows or cares about a Wii U. A new console, marketed correctly, would be beneficial to Nintendo, no matter what it does.

If they can sell a $50-$99 box with a huge library of old-school titles to choose from, that would work.

Yes, I get that, but it would require Nintendo to make a lot of old titles available at reasonable prices and sorting out the accounts issues and marketing it properly and finding enough of a userbase to make it all worthwhile and...

It could possibly work (somewhat) if they pushed the nostalgia angle hard and got the price right. I'd like to see Nintendo actually make some kind of effort with something, but I don't think they will.

You could just release them on the U, or alternatively the easier option would be to just, I don't know, actually treat the VC better. Why don't we have N64 games yet? I'd totally download SM64 just to play it on the pad. And what about GC games!

Seriously?

Instead of releasing more software for the Wii U, you want them to make another machine that will face horrendous software droughts, and takes away even more development resources?

I mean, really? How? Why?

how are we missing the point if we are discussing the Machine the OP is describing?

The only reason we're discussing a new Nintendo machine is because the Wii U is done. No one knows about the Wii U. Nintendo adding this to the Wii U won't do anything, just like Mario 3d World and Earthbound didn't do anything.

If Nintendo did this, are you saying it's better to do it on the Wii U than a new machine? Taking in consideration how the Wii U is doing.

You heard it here first people. Nintendo should cancel Smash, Mario Kart, X, etc because it's pointless. Abandon the 6 million current owners and don't take advantage of falling production costs that could put the console in a more attractive price point later in the year because it's pointless. Instead, create a new console that people will be dying to buy after the huge failure of the Wii U. Winning strategy there.

Top 3 ideas for the Wii U
1. Start releasing Nintendo games concurrently on Steam of Xbox to drum up interest in Nintendo franchises.
2. Release a model without the gamepad. Press the instant patch button that removes the need for the gamepad in about 80% of the games currently released including third party games.
3. Abandon the Wii U and put out a brand new console for HD remakes. Ensure the Wii U resulted in nothing but a loss for the company.

Two of the dumbest ideas I've ever had the misfortune of reading.

Have you seen dk sales? Nintendo wouldn't exactly be abandoning an actively purchase happy user base...non stop great games...shit sales.

I would love to see the wiiu get a swing of momentum but if software didn't help idk what will. Its already dirt cheap on sales.

I guess I was talking about the next machine BC its clear its not that far off even if wiiu gets 2 more years life

I hate bashing OP but what the fuck? You didn't think this one through bruh.

Wait, do you mean like a Dolphin console?

thank you for saying this for me

As far as I know there are considerably more Wii U systems in homes than XBox Ones... I know it's been out longer, but more than 6 million people hardly qualifies as "no one".

Also, Nintendo's got zero debt and is sitting on something like 8 billion dollars. They're in better financial shape than the majority of North America, maybe their long term plan is doing alright, huh?

Isn't that more or less like Wii U ?
Like Wii ?
Nintendo have kind of tried it (plus adding new games each time) and succeded with Wii and failed with Wii U

The idea is a box only for HD remakes/updates to old games. Nintendo's huge library and 3rd party games.

So it would not need to be bleeding edge hardware. Might work with the handheld/console idea really well and it could be designed to make it a profitable venture for 3rd party's.

Maybe this is an awful idea. Maybe I'm just talking about a pc with nintendo games. Idk.

Thoughts?

So you want a Wii U? Good news! Nintendo has a product called the Wii U that does just that!

Watch this happen for real in a few months.

What if it was something you could plug into your display like a Chromecast/Roku at a very, very low price point instead of a full-blown console? That might hit the "Don't want a Wii U" niche but allow Nintendo to push its online marketplace.

Bad idea IMO. Its better that they shift away from specific hardware platforms and instead concentrate on an OS experience. They should heavily support VC and HD remakes and once made available, they will play on any device running that OS from now to infinity basically.
