HOW CAN I PS3? (Just got a PS3 - now what?)

I just got a ps3 myself so this thread is useful. Never would have heard of Folklore without it and now I wrote it down as a must buy.

It would be useful if people gave a sentence or two desription of games listed that they think people should buy, or at least list the genre so that I can ignore all the people listing shooters ;P

Also it helps to not use abbreviations. I have no idea what HSG5 or RFOM are.

Thus far I own disgaea 3, mgs4, and bionic commando rearmed and have written down folklore as a must buy.

What is generally considered to be the best 3rd person action game? I enjoy the games enough to buy one, and only one. So out of Ninja Gaiden, Heavenly Sword, God of War, Devil May Cry, and anything else like them, what is generally considered to be the best?

I've seen Folklore as cheap as $8 in the clearance sections of Target. Might want to check there next time you're out.

B:BC as a replacement for Warhawk? Kidding, right? They aren't even the same genre.
Uh... both aren't large-scale multiplayer shooters with vehicular combat? Warhawk seems pretty Battlefield-esque to me, except for not having classes and weapon pick-ups, except that Warhawk feels oddly floaty to me and I can't get my head around it. It's not a bad game, I just can't stand the way it feels; no matter how much I mess with the sensitivity, it doesn't feel right.

I used to play a lot of BF2 on PC when it came out...it was great fun. Warhawk is sorta like that? That's a sale.

Any good RPGs on PS3? I am gonna hold myself with FFXII (a game I haven't played yet) until something new comes around there...

If Eternal Sonata ends up coming out this year, that's a good (not fantastic) RPG that's worth checking out if you're dying for a JRPG.

Congrats. Get RaC:FTOD and Quest for Booty on PSN. If you like golf games get HSG:OOB and dl Kratos on PSN.

Maybe one of us have not played the other game enough, but from what I played, B:BC is not anything like Warhawk. They both have vehicles and guns, but that is about as far as it goes. BF2 is closer, but comparing Warhawk to Battlefield is like comparing Flight Simulator to Crimson Skies. Same basic concept, but two very different executions. Warhawk is much more arcadey in general.

burnout paradise and uncharted are must owns

for ps2 playing, you must get okami. its a GH title now so there is no excuse

not must-owns, but my personal suggestions: nba street homecourt, civilization revolution

Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction
Ratchet & Clank: Quest for Booty PSN
Resistance: Fall of Man so you're ready for R2 in November!

Also... buy Fl0w.

So I bought a 60GB PS3 from Kadey in the buy/sell/trade thread, and it just arrived yesterday. I hooked that sucker up to my HDTV with HDMI, and am ready to jump in play b3yond, or whatever it is we do once we get one of these.

I figure on getting Metal Gear Solid 4, and because I am afraid of the wrath of Kittonwy, I'll be BUYING UNCHARTED. After that, what else should I be getting? I remember going to Mejilan's house and playing Call of Duty 4 (shout out to Mejilan; coolest dude ever), so I think I'll get that too. What else is out there that's worth grabbing post-haste? Educate me, GAF!

YES!!!

MGS4 is a necessity, fuck every last hater in this thread. Disgaea 3, Uncharted, and Burnout Paradise if you don't own it on 360.

As for PSN, go with: flOw, Everyday Shooter, PixelJunk Monsters, PixelJunk Eden, Bionic Commando Rearmed, and maybe The Last Guy (play the demo, see what you think).

Oh, and don't forget the fuck awesome Metal Gear Database.

Dualshock 3 (MUST HAVE even though cod4 doesn't support rumble)
Gioteck Real Triggers (MUST HAVE)
SuperStardust HD
Warhawk (don't be fooled....it's potentially the most "lolfun" online multiplayer this gen so far)
MGS4 (maybe pick up the essentials collection if you haven't played the rest)
Uncharted (will make you proud of your HDTV/PS3)

I haven't read any respones yet, but I'm pretty much a fact stater so listen to me if you want good games. Oh, and don't bother doing this:

good games.
insert game you think is bad

Blu-ray Disc:
Buy Resistance, it's an awesome experience (single player wise too for the story, prepare for R2)
Skip Motorstorm, it's an fucking awesome game but Pacific Rift will rock it's world.
Virtua Fighter 5 or Soul Calibur IV or both if you're into deep/fun 3D fighting games.
If you liked previous Ridge Racer games, you're gonna LOVE RR7. It's single player contains at least 50 hours of fun (and fucking frustrating) gameplay. Multiplayer is OK.
Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion if your PC sucks and you're into American RPGs. Check out some videos of this before deciding to buy it.
The Darkness: Really, REALLY engaging story with pretty good gameplay. It tends to get repetetive towards the end but the story will make you play it twice.
Ninja Gaiden Sigma: If you haven't played any other Ninja Gaiden games and if you're into action games that requires deep fucking reflex skills.
Heavenly Sword: It's platinum now. There is no reason what so ever not to buy it. It's 6 hours long, yes, but it's one hell'uva ride experience. Do not miss this one.
Warhawk: Just fucking buy it, seriously. Also adding that people are constantly playing Warhawk, finding servers to play in takes less than 5 seconds.
Ratchet & Clank Future: Last years GotY for me, but GAF hates it. I'll just recommend it for you, since I don't want to get killed.
Burnout Paradise: Incredibly fun and addicting. Some parts are too frustrating but overall experience is a no-miss. Try out the demo and see if you like it. If you don't like it, buy it. If you do like it, buy it (no typo, seriously. The demo sucked).
Uncharted: RAWR >:)
Devil May Cry 4: Holy shit, don't trust the haters. This years best experience if you take MGS4 away. Top notch gameplay, amazing graphics and awesome cutscenes. Some people don't like the back tracking but it shouldn't stop you from playing it through at least once. Oh and Bloody Palace alone makes it worth it.
GTAIV: :)
MGS4: !

PSN Network:
fl0w: Cheap and incredible, 'nuff said.
T5: DR Online: While the online part pretty much sucks ass, if you like Tekken, you'll love this one.
Puzzle Fighter II HD: Download the demo. Enjoyed it? Buy it. It's awesome.
PixelJunk: Monsters: This one will rock your world. Heck, you don't even need to like tower defense games to like Monsters, it's that good.
Stardust HD: Addicting as fuck, now with trophies, demo sucks, just buy it.
PixelJunk: Eden: Best PSN game out there, got over 60 hours from Eden.

I skipped some games but my fingers started to hurt so :/

EDIT: Oh you wanted future games too? I'd put the list up but there are titles like T6 and FFXIII there, those won't be out for a while so...

Killzone 2
Resistance 2
Pacific Rift
Wipeout HD
Next PixelJunk game
Fallout 3, look for Oblivion above.
LittleBigPlanet
Bioshock
Yakuza 3/Kenzan
Valkyrie of the Battlefield
Mirrors Edge

for shooters don't sleep on Bioshock PS3 at least as a rental, looks good. Buy Resistance 2.

also what good in the hood insofar as PS3 wireless bluetooth headsets? I see the Jabra's offereings with the older BT125 and the BT135 Bluetooth Wireless Headsets, what else?

EDIT: Should I wait for Sony's Official one coming out soon?

I've heard that some Motorola ones give trouble so I've stayed away from those. I had a Plantronics one that was great until I lost it (think it was a 320?). The Jabra BT 125 is what I got about 2 weeks ago when on sale at BB for $25. Works fantastic. Pairs easily and re-pairs excellently. Seems to actually be able to be paired with my cell phone and be paired with the PS3 without having to re-link them up again which is very nice. Don't quote me on that last part as I'm not completely sure as I haven't done it often. :D

Got it. Their newest offerings are here, not bad. I'm looking to buy one and probably nab Warhawk. If you buy it you're a dead man, mcblack! :D

Also here's a list of "Best PS3 Compatible Headsets"

Some more awesome buys I'd recommend:
Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction
Everyday Shooter
Super Stardust HD
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
Heavenly Sword
Madden 08
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
Rock Band
Pixeljunk

It can be paired with multiple devices at once. I do the same. Just make sure you only have your phone or your PS3 nearby when you tunr on the headset. Or turn off autopairing on the phone and turn it on when you need it.

What other systems do you have? Are you a big PC guy? If you haven't played the Orange Box stuff, you really have to. Soul Calibur 4 is pretty tight as well.
I just went through the entirety of the OB for PS3, and I have to say: fuck-that-shit.

While the games themselves are solid, there are just far too many technical issues with this version to even warrant the purchase. The audio cracking constantly is so ridiculously irritating, there are several glitchy areas, and dipping frame rates don't help.

The OP has a worthy PC, from the sounds of it, as well as a 360, so while this is a non-issue for him, I certainly don't want anyone to believe this port is acceptable .

As for game suggestions...

PixelJunk Monsters/Eden, Bionic Commando Rearmed, flOw, Disgaea 3, Folklore, MGS4, Heavenly Sword, Uncharted, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, and Resistance (first few levels suck, but stick with it)

Warhawk has a strong aim assist, and is primarily focused on the x-axis for aiming. I would never suggest replacing one with other, though.

question about ratchet and clank.

I downloaded and played the $15 one that was on psn. I thought it was ok. I liked the characters and the platforming aspects, but hated the shooter aspects. It is my understanding that the psn version, because you don't have clank, is the *most* focused on platforming skills.

Are the rest of the games more shooter based? If a full version was at *least* as platforming heavy as the psn one then I might consider it, otherwise no way.

While i agree there's NOTHING ELSE in the PS3 library right now in matters of sim racing, i suggest you buy Ferrari Challenge if you want a sim racer while you wait for GT5.

I tried it today and it's awesome.

Just ordered Ninja Gaiden Sigma and Uncharted.

When I get home from work/school, I'll set up a PSN ID and start grabbing some downloads.

Do you buy things with points, like on Wii or 360, or are things measured in dollars?

dollars. you just put money in your psn wallet. do it on a pc though becuz on the console its a pain unless you have a keyboard.

actually you can set up your psn online right now

actually, you don't have to do that. If you don't want spare change sitting around, all you have to do is ring up whatever you're buying to checkout, and it'll ask if you want to pay the exact amount with your card.

How do I do that?

PSN ID is like a Gamertag on XBL, right?

You can do that from the console in the US, and I believe you can sign up for a PSN id online in Europe. I don't know that it's possible to sign up online in the US though. Was looking for it on the Playstation site and in the signup section it only references signing up using the console.

and for the threads sake, i also recommend Siren:Blood Curse, Heavenly Sword, Uncharted, MGS4, and Soul Calibur 4.

Disgaea 3 is pretty good huh? How would a guy that enjoyed his time with the original but never bothered to finish it like the third one?

It's only a must have because the Sixaxis wireless is brokenÂ…

Small word of advice: many of the games mentioned here have demos available to download. I would strongly recommend you try them before going out and making a purchase. Just because GAF hypes a game doesn't necessarily make it anything special. (I'm looking at you, ResistanceÂ…)

After spending a fair bit of time with most of the ‘big’ PSN releases, Super Stardust HD is the only one I would actually recommend you buy — it's the only one I've spent any real length of time playing. (and I keep going back because it's so good — best game on the system)

THis. Are you a multiplatform guy or do we need to list just PS3 exclusives.

Off the top of my head PS3 only:
- buy Uncharted, Ratchet, Warhawk, MGS.
- rent Heavenly Sword (you can finish it in 8-10 hours in a weekend), Resistance (to catch up for the sequel).
- get from PSN - Everyday Shooter, Super Stardust, Pixeljunk Monsters and Eden.

And let us know what your PSN ID is, or add some friends. Also get themes, demos and whatever else you might want off the PSN store. And set up PSN store accts for UK, Japan and Hong Kong and Australia.

If you dont have an X360 or PC, then add Burnout, Bioshock, COD4 and more to your list.

Listen to this guy. Like, seriously. x10

A lot. In terms of gameplay it's much improved, there are even more systems to mess with, and the characters and setting are a return to form after the so-so second part. (Disregard my avatar I'm not biased :lol)

Same here, and I love it. This game is fulfilling every jrpg want and need right now. Great stuff, endless amounts of detail in this game. Goofy story to be sure, but the levels are a blast and some of the classes are badass. Buy it now before it disappears off the shelves forever!

No one has mentioned that Loco Roco game, but I really liked it. Download the demo at least.

Besides that, I bought, and am very happy with Virtua Fighter 5, GTA4, Hot Shotz Golf, Super Stardust, and Folklore.

It's in dollars, you pay what it sez you'll have to pay.
