How can people not like 'Nintendo Games'?

What is...the appeal of Animal Crossing

you guys don't have enough chores to do in real life, you feel the need to do them in fuckin video games, too?

Metroid hasn't been good since the SNES, the Prime games I thought were no fun. Zelda also lost it's magic and it's 3D games of current just did nothing for me. Mario, well that's vague as hes in everything... I like Mario Kart games but the platformer formula of the series just feels samey to me and lot of the spin off games are just downright bland games that only get any attention to the whole flashy franchise sheen they put on them.

I just feel like there is a severe lack of variety with Nintendo games while they simply slather anything they do to break from the mold with their tired franchise mascots instead of really doing anything new. They then have to make the game fit into the franchises universe and work it to fit it's visual and nostalgic filled mold.

I see a Nintendo conference and it's Mario Mario Mario Mario Zelda Mario ....

I get what you mean too, they don't go out of the way to market themselves with anything aside of Mario/Zelda... I think they are just having a hard time going to the HD era and they thought a 2D HD game would make everyone go crazy when it didn't. TP/SS are decent but no way was good as OOT/MM/WW, it's just been hard for them as a whole.

While the 3DS IS DOING AMAZING, I'd recommend you to check it out, Super Mario 3d Land is fantastic, we got Fire Emblem: Awakening, Luigi's Mansion 2,Kid Icarus, Animal Crossing soon... so mush AMAZING Nintendo 1st party support(and Atlus sending their heavy titles, it's heaven)

It seriously seems like everything amazing about Nintendo atm is happening to the 3ds

For sure. I'm pretty tempted to pick one up. Probably gonna grab an XL. I'll probably end up getting a Wii-U when they hit rock bottom price... maybe. I'm not sure why they wanted to stay out of the big HD fight so bad. I can only imagine the draw of a system that had all the third party games the other systems had, plus Nintendo games.

I play World of Warcraft and don't have a problem with dailies.

So clearly, I need MORE chores.

i have never played an animal crossing game

This thread has been an interesting read. I don't know if I should be happy that my suspicions about some modern gamers have been confirmed, or sad.

You can't go.

I need someone to make me simultaneously hyped and disappointed in Pikmin 3.

Pikmin 3 is going to have the best of Pikmin and Pikmin 2 in one game and will blow your socks off (and a few other things if you know what I mean).

Zero compelling textures, no co-op, gimmicky use of a touchscreen, shake to throw Pikmin, and anything that is in your nightmares come true.

marketing. Get enough people to say something is kiddy and a large chunk of the people that buy games don't want to be associated with that.
Pretty much this. There's grown men playing with toys that don't want to play other toys because of the negative image those toys have. It's ridiculous but it's been that way since the Genesis vs. Super Nintendo.

All the people saying, "Nintendo's changed man!" and "They used to be good," clearly don't keep up to date with their output these days. Nintendo just keeps getting better if you stay informed and actually buy and play their games.

I read the op. it oversells the sustained variety available in nintendo titles.

Really?

I hate to do list wars, but between DS, Wii, Wii U, and 3DS, these are the franchises/spin-offs that have come out. That's not an insignificant list.

New Army Slogan: "F2P"

Is it F2P? I guess they might help? I don't understand paying $40 bucks to do some of the most menial, boring ass chores and fishing, with the ugliest video game characters Nintendo has spit out since the Miis. There's not even like...gameplay there. Who buys this shit?

I've got no problem with Nintendo games but what would you recommend to PC players that like stuff like Civ 5, Bioshock, Borderlands, FTL, Grand Theft Auto, etc? Nintendo is very strong in certain areas and pretty weak in others.

it's not F2P, and do some fucking research. It's the game that sold the most copies in japan and there's a following(including me) that have been DYING to get their hands on it.

I know, people buy some weeeeeeeeeird shit. By far Nintendo's worst "game".

Animal Crossing is brilliant. The main characters are hideous, but the animals themselves are adorable. There's a ton of 'gameplay' in the chores. I mean, sure it's shallow, but there's a ton to do and collect.

... Wow. I'd rip ViewtifulJC apart but I don't want to get banned. Animal Crossing is a very well-designed game.

I am 31 and Nintendo rarely puts out something I want to play these days..

With the exception of Zelda I outgrew all of them.

Thus I have no love for them nostolgia wise and as a 34 year old man I ain't gonna start now. .

Your age has nothing to do with your gaming preference. I'm 35 and most Nintendo games are on my must play list.

I think the mentality of some gamers these days are if the game does not have a gun in the middle of the screen or bloody swords/axes then it isn't for adults.

So much wrong in this post.

Conceptually it's not far off what The Sims tried to acheive (although they very much play differently, they have similar ambiguous end life goals and encourage socialising with AI for example) as a result I had no problem diving into Animal Crossing for the Gamecube and not finding it "weird."

When someone claims they don't like *anything* in the entirety of a console manufacturer's catalog, I gotta assume they either have very specific taste or they're the close-minded type. That or it's some weird, personal thing.

I want to play Animal Crossing because the music that changes by hour and there are funky characters like Bob the cat. At least that's what I told myself over a decade ago when I first played it and haven't managed to play it much since. I wish I could play a real game that has the same feeling as being awake at 3 a.m. in Animal Crossing, that's about it.

EDIT: I think Animal Crossing characters look way better than Miis. In fact, I'd gladly take a built-in Animal Crossing world than whatever Nintendo is doing now with their Miis.

Well. Lets change the dynamic of this discussion..

Im often seeing replys that say Nintendo isn't bringing anything really that new regarding new entire in IP's. Some say they are formulaic. I would agree. But how do you suppose Nintendo changes that? Give some examples on how Ninty can switch up the game. I would like to see some peoples ideas. Here, Ill start.

New Super Mario Bros type game with playable Mario, Luigi, Wario, Waluigi. Each character has an ability mechanic that ties into gameplay

A Zelda game where Link doesn't need to save Zelda.. Just stop Ganon at all costs. Sends him on a journey in a massively open world which contains all dungeons in the game. Game still plays with familiar linear direction but quests and objectives can be taken in any order, May alter weapon setups or item finds

A Metroid game like Other M but done perfectly in every way (Other M was SO fucking cool when revealed at E3... then it sucked)

Starfox multiplayer with at least 12 players online (Eshop only)

A Mario Kart with an Off Road Rally Cross type theme (ATVS, Dirtbikes, Tricycles)

Kid Icarus Stylish Action game with combos and huge bosses

A Bowser game about destroying the mushroom kingdom only to find out half way that he needs to save it... Doh! lol

Those are my ideas. Some may suck but I wanna here ways Nintendo can liven up some of these franchises

If you can't enjoy a match of Smash Bros with 3 more friends, then you can't appreciate anything in life and have kittens for breakfast.

They don't own or have access to a Nintendo system and mistake "do not want to buy a system in order to play" with like.

There are a few Nintendo games I enjoy (Fire Emblem, Luigi's Mansion, Advance Wars), but for the most part I don't care for their output. While they have a variety of genres they release games in, the genres I do enjoy don't get much support from them.

I think you've mentioned this before, and you were just as unequivocally wrong then as you are now.

It's a game. You play it. Viola, gameplay.

I buy that shit. I've bought that shit since the GCN days.

People have preferences and tastes, and some people (read: a shit ton of people) like AC.

I hate to assign right and wrong to personal opinions, but you, in this case, are wrong. Several millions of sold copies of this series' games will show you the door.

They don't own or have access to a Nintendo system and mistake "do not want to buy a system in order to play" with like.

But they're not the same are they. Someone may like some Nintendo games but the value of video gaming in general may be lower for them. Some people wouldn't buy a $99 console even if it had 10 games they would enjoy wheras some people would buy a $500 for a single game. So I guess I'm agreeing with you, but I think there are people who genuinely wouldn't buy a Nintendo system because of some sort of grudge they have against the brand.

There are a few Nintendo games I enjoy (Fire Emblem, Luigi's Mansion, Advance Wars), but for the most part I don't care for their output. While they have a variety of genres they release games in, the genres I do enjoy don't get much support from them.

Well I mean you clearly don't "not like" Nintendo games. You may not like them as much as some people but you stated some games that you like. That's sort of what I'm getting at. Nintendo outputs so many highly praised games with such a wide variety that even people who's favourite genres aren't completely represented won't make such a blanket statement that they "don't like Nintendo games" because there is something for pretty much everybody.

being on wii certainly doesn't help for me. actually there are quite a few wii exclusives i'd love to play, but none of them are nintendo.

i suppose pokemon is the only exception, but i didn't care for anything past 3rd gen.

can't say i particularly care for microsoft games either. sony, there's a few but overall not really either. now that i think about it, it's seems weird that i don't care for any of the console makers as game publishers. sega was always the best for me.

The WiiU is the first system I have not bought at launch (still haven't). A lot of the big Nintendo franchises don't do very much for me anymore. A new Metroid could change that. Maybe.

Its just poorly worded/explained opinions that people are too lazy to explain. Nintendo does provide a wide assortment of different genres, aesthetics and tones. However, the majority of their output definitely has a family friendly aesthetic. They are weaker in offering certain genres/ appeals to audience which might not provide justification in purchasing their console. That or the games with mass appeal such as Wii Sports/Mario Kart/NSMB may not provide enough depth/content to justify them purchasing their machine.

To make a blanket statement that no nintendo games appeal to me, I highly doubt as I'm sure most gamers could at least find one game Nintendo has created in their lifetime that they enjoy. Whether Nintendo produces enough of said game, or creates something compelling enough to spend their money on is a different matter. Although I could be wrong.

Because sports are fun, and playing as pro athletes is fun.

Delivering a sofa to my neighbor who rewards me with a (ugly) cabinet is not fun.

Sports?

looking at those games even when they're not in the same genre most of them are appealing to the exact same desires of the exact same gamer. A mario kart game is just as much a mario game in terms of how it approaches racing and/or karting as the regular mario games approach platforming. This is less true of perhaps xenoblade but even among rpgs there's a strong cavalcade of what feels like highly similar philosophies at play. Is it really that diverse if you're trying to strike the same vein from different angles?

....Wait...what? Mario Kart is a casual living room multiplayer experience. Mario platformers are some of the most (ugh) "hardcore" platformers out there.

A lego city undercover type game with nintendo characters would have been pretty awesome. Not sure why they haven't tried that yet. If they have, I haven't heard of it.

Same reason I got sick of blizzard, epic, and bungie as I aged. Companies change in focus and what nitnendo did for what it does now are two different things. Some people never liked nintendo and I knew about this before sega and nintendo ever started the 16bit wars. Video games are extremely broad and considering the amount of platforms that have existed since the 80's its impossible to please or appeal to everyone who has an interest in them.

My question is why do you care?

I know, people buy some weeeeeeeeeird shit. By far Nintendo's worst "game".

you do know that you're just being an ignorant fool, right? The game is amazing but it's not that easy to explain it, you have to play it to understand. I get bored as hell with Harvest Moon for example. It's great and I'm sure I'll dump 1000 hours in it.

One big problem they are on nintendo systems only. A system you have to just buy for nintendo games pretty much. Its not like a ps360 were you still get the big third party games. So to even try out the new games you have to invest a lot of money.

I really think nintendo would make more money being 3rd party in consoles. Handhelds is still worth it right now. At least in japan....

Holy shit, this topic exploded. And someone else has already stated my argument:

Just saying that you don't like "Nintendo games" is way, waaaayy too broad of a statement for me to take you seriously, since their games spread across such a wide range of genres that I'm confident you'll be able to find something that you like somewhere, even if it's just one or two games.

they will not go 3rd party, Nintendo is a hardware company that sells games to sell their hardware. but you do bring a point I've stated before, you need a Nintendo console to buy Nintendo games.

I think the 30's part is admissible (I'm near 30) because it means we've grown up so long with these game. How many times must you play Mario before you are allowed to say, Ok, time to move on.

If I reference it on sites like Reddit, hell yeah I'll like Nintendo games. Free karma dude. But outside the internet? No motive to play it. They do seem fun, but I guess I grew out of phase when my fraternity brothers told me to stop liking it since Nintendo is highly correlated with bronies and betas.

never, I've played Mario almost every year, be it in a sport game, kart game, 2d, 3d, rpg

it's never boring, this year we're getting Luigi's Mansion 2, Mario and Luigi: Dream Team, and hopefully another 2D/3D Mario

I've lived with Mario since I was 3 years old, I'm 24 years old and I'll keep playing Mario till life let's me do so
