How cannonically fast is Sonic? [Asking for documents and proof.]

These. Flash is just dumb

EDIT:

lol, I remember reading this a while back. I don't think the author really thought out the implications of having Flash perceive time that would be equivalent of the lifespan of the universe.

If we played this straight, he probably would have blown his brains out within the first second of having his powers considering of how long that moment would have lasted for him.

It's not like this is the only franchise this applies to

But that's the actual formula to calculate the chance of a capture used within the game, no? How is that the same thing?

The name Sonic implies Mach 1, which is something of the order of 320m/s.
The plane Tails catches up to or overtakes Sonic in during the intro of Sonic 3 is a simple propellor based plane which probably has a top speed of the order of 300 km/h, which is obviously far less than Mach 1.

In principle one could estimate the top speed of Sonic based on the relative motion compared to the scale of real-world objects embedded in the games such as sunflowers in Green Hill Zone.

Sonic is just a name, and Green Hill Zone was a looong time ago.

Tail's name is Miles Prower ("Miles Per Hour")

Wasn't there an early comic where he could run fast enough on the surface of water to change its consistency and make it into snow? And he did this to throw snowballs at badniks, in a boat or something?

...I read a lot of Sonic comics as a kid.

Chaos Control tho.

And he can still use the super speed during the time stops.

But this is Souji Tendou. His name literally means ""(he walks the) Heavenly path, (he) rules over all". When facing Sonic, he would do his finger point to heaven and say, "As grandma would say... <insert philosophy involving hedgehogs>". He is a walking god mode.

Sonic's speed is given at the end of every stage in Sonic Chaos on thr Game Gear. It frequently exceeded 1000 km/h.

This, to my knowledge, is the only quantified speed for Sonic the Hedgehog is a Sega game. Most people never played this game from the 90's and are not aware of this detail. Otherwise, it wouldn't end up so often in debates where people only played the Genesis or newer games.

My head Canon is that sonic is CAPABLE of moving at flash-level speeds. But unlike the flash, running makes him tired like it would most living things. So he can't always be running around at the speed of sound, since he doesn't have to.

But when shit hits the fan the guy gets his shit in gear and can run at the speed of light. Sonic always has '90s 'tude in my head, why make yourself run at light speed when you can run less than the speed of sound, outpace most everything, and not lose your chili dog. Also why murder eggman when you can beat him every time he thinks he's won? Hence not catching him: make the fat guy run for his life

I think Sonic is a "situation" similar to Flash. I always though he moved around the speed of sound cause its a speed that is most comfortable to him. (perhaps comparable to a light jog for us instead of all out sprinting which would make us tired)

Also, like the Flash, excessive speeds such as the speed of light and faster could be catastrophic to the nearby environment and could possibly damage the ozone somehow. An example of this was in the Matrix (I forget which movie, probably Reloaded) Neo flies after Trinity while she is falling mortally wounded from a building. Dude literally caught up cars, buildings and huge ass semi-trucks drafting behind him.

Flash gets away with his antics cause as we all know, comic writers make superheroes appear MUCH larger than life purposely. I think Sonic might be capable of Flash's speeds since there really isn't an official stance on his max speed and under different writers he's capable of whatever the deem him to be able to do, but since Sonic's world isn't full of super and cosmic powered entities like DC or Marvel, he doesn't really need to "go all out" on as many occassions like the Flash has needed to do.

All of this is subjective of course, my own personal opinion.

Flash has the Speed Force. He can break the laws of physics, so none of that happens.

Sonic probably needs a lot of chili dogs to fuel his rapid metabolic processes too. Maybe that's why the old games had a ten minute time limit per level, he had to eat in between zones or die of starvation.

Does this mean he makes a mean fart?
