How could PS3 has a hard time in japan when the HD penetration is so high?

Japan's HD penetration surged from 50% to 64% to lead in HD penetration

Just read this news and wonder why HD machine like PS3 still has the problem over there (beside there is no games to buy). With this very high rate, the japanese need some kind of HD source in their house. How could they play wii on their HDTV ?

Price probably?

And the whole deal about gaming being on a decline in Japan overall, and how the DS was doing great, which meant that Japanese gamers wanted something different, hence the success of the Wii.

I guess a combination of both, and no FF yet.

When I first heard abouty the Wii I was like "This is gonna take over Japan". Looks like I was right. I think the wii just offers more of the casual types of games Japanese have always liked. If It starts offering JRPGs, look the hell out.

The DS is the leading platform in Japan and it has a really tiny screen. I guess they like things to be small. Except boobis

And nobody really cares enough about HD, and HD videogames in particular, apparently.

My vote goes with this one, it was overplayed as a selling point, IMHO.

- Most people don't give a shit about graphics
- Many franchises and genres associated with Playstation have declined massively
- Japan's market has shifted in favour of Nintendo
- Most people don't want a more involving gaming experience, they want a simpler one
- Most people don't know what a Digital Hub is and wouldn't want one if they did
- Blu Ray isn't any kind of incentive because most people aren't prepared to rebuy their DVD collection, or even select titles, because the improvements aren't worth it to them
- PS3 business model is going after a market that isn't there, to the extent even when the big games come out it still has no chance of ever reaching PS2 dominance
- Too expensive

The best answer would be, all of the above.

because its 600$

lollll am i rite?

no honestly. this time, its basicly DS Fever. even the Wii sales is going a lil down.

+ not many good triple A games to justify the expensive price for GAME console.

but i am really excited about this week in japan. Ninja Sigma is coming out and so is this RPG game from namco on xbox 360 trusty something something.

so i wonder what the sales jump will be and for how long the jump will last

What.

It is tracking better than the DS at the same points of thier lifetimes.

Most Japanese clearly haven't.

Because that's all they sell? Or maybe because of it's aesthetic. They obviously don't care enough about the stuff on the screen to warrant some sort of "HD source".

The dominating system has a tiny resolution, 2x256x192. I think, like in other countries people in Japan don't buy a new TV because of the resolution. I mean, I know about different persons having an HDTV, but nearly none of them gives a shit about HD-offerings.

i am not sure but in the last media thread, the Wii sales were lower than the week before and the week before.

i might be wrong tho. i only look at the PS3 numbers and Xbox 360 numbers. not gona buy the Wii this generation. thats why i never go to Nintendo thread. not interested to get raped for 250$ on console that has technology not worth 100$

Indeed, if you're going to get raped you may as well go all the way for a $600 rape

I've seen 4 movies and 1 tourist video thing on HD DVD/Blu-Ray and only the tourist video thing (spring time in Kyoto thing) did anything for me.

I can see the difference between HD video and standard DVD video; SWAT, funnily enough, looked noticeably better in HD. But I didn't care, because HD DVD/Blu-Ray doesn't represent a great leap over DVD.

When I get my 6 hours of bonus footage and pop-up bios and in-movie video that I was promised on a movie I care about, or entire seasons of TV shows I'd like on one disc, then I might give a shit. But at the moment, both HD optical formats are worthless to me.

And there a lot of people who feel this way.

HD is NOT a main selling factor. The majority of the consumers doesn't care or know about pixel resolution, progressive scan, etc.

Charlie, sporsk
ksks lol
and the other jGAFfers should just tell us instead of letting speculation run wild.

So far we have

1) Lack of games
2) High price
3) The PS3 is too big
4) Japanese are racist and hate Sony because it's a japanese company
5) Japanese people don't care about displaying HD on their HDTVs (HDTV = thin TV with a big screen)
6) what ziran said

And I have to say, at least two of those sound kinda bogus to me.

Though I don't know for a fact, I'd imagine that it's because SDTV availability is shrinking and most Japanese buyers aren't looking for the cheapest new sets to buy. High percentages of HDTV penetration won't be mostly because of consumers actively seeking those sets out, IMO. Consumers, worldwide, simply don't have much choice at some point. Stereo televisions were adopted for the same reasons. Some got in because of the quality difference. Most got in because they didn't have much choice. With that in mind, you're not going to find a ton of people adopting HD AV products (like games systems) just because they happen to own a high definition display. Most people simply don't care enough and are probably still under the impression that HDTVs make everything automagically high definition.

On-topic:

I think it's obvious that PS3 doesn't have what Japan wants: Japanese games. Ninty's treating them right, I guess.
