How did DLC become the worst value in gaming?

DA's DLC is the worst shit ever, $15 for a character, its not like you go through a nice little 40 minute quest to get him, Shale is right there in the fucking village, its bullshit.

Plus, I hear that DA's DLC requires an authentication every time you load a savegame with DLC. Is that true? If so, it not only turns a $60 game into an $80 game, but then in a few years it'll make those saves worthless if/when EA decides to stop maintaining old authentication protocols.

I'm betting that market research shows that people that are willing to buy digital content at all are not pricessensitive enough to make cutting the price in even half (and it sounds like this thread is trying to argue for more reductions more like $5-10 addons reduced to $1-2) worth while at all. They are not going to sell 5 or 6 times as much to break even, so they milk the niche.

Precisely.

He's included with every version of the game that you buy new. It's disingenuous to say he costs $15 straight-up.

Well, at least have the comfort that devs hate DLC too. Its one of those publishing mandates that are given to the dev group and then we have to brainstorm about how to do it :<

That's only if you buy it used, which no publisher/developer under any circumstances wants you doing.

but.... Wipeout Fury. Well thats one of the better examples obviously.

Still you will have people cry foul about that even though the budget would have been around 2-3 million to make it. I like DLC if it extends the playability of a game I like with fair value for the dollar. I'd easily buy a $10 map pack for Battlefield 1943 if it came with 3 or 4 new ones.

Namco is easily the worst offender here. Did you guys ever see the AC6 dlc? 400 points for Idolmaster planes! Get the fuck outta here :lol

Yes, the tide is starting to turn. Make your time, devs and pubs. The clock is ticking on how long you can rip off the console userbase before they start taking notice.

I agree completely. DLC is a joke, 99 percent of it is garbage.

The way things like MW2 sold with all its anti-consumer wank/justified complaints makes me think the truth will be a lot sadder then it should be.

I do think one effect of DLC is reduced number of new games bought. Customers will compensate for the higher price of games somehow, usually by buying less games, or buying them used.

This.

I feel so dirty when I see the download size after paying for something that was already on the disc.

That's why I REFUSE to pay for things on the disc.

I'm completely against buying clothing for avatars, but I can tolerate someone doing it.

I think DLC is fine depending on how it's done. I have no problem with Fallout's as early consumers always end up spending more, so how's that any different then when they put it in a GOTY edition? Map packs are fine too, since it extends the multiplayer. Games are needing more and more to give reasons for consumers not to sell their copy and DLC I think is a better answer then a tacked on multiplayer.

DLC should exist to augment games with additional content and increase gameplay value. It should be completely optional as we've already paid full price for the game. What seems to be happening is developers pulling content out of the core game and making it DLC to make a few extra bucks e.g things that are already on the disk.

This thread makes me not want to buy the Borderlands DLC.

at 6.69 right now for the pc version, it seems...kinda worth it. I'm still level 23 though so I probably won't get it.

Ugh, I've been listening to douchenozzles on podcasts argue for $10.00 dlc for DA's shit ("Well taking your girlfriend out to lunch and dessert costs just as much".) And it's bad justification. It's two separate things and hell, a good lunch with your girl is a much more rewarding, and possibly even lengthier, thing at $10-$15 than some of the bullshit DLC that's out there.

I just got the game but to save a little money on the deal I was thinking about getting it. I heard mixed reviews about it though.

In an interview with Kotaku, the creative director of "Assassin's Creed 2," Patrice Desilets, mentioned that the forthcoming DLC content was initially planned as part of the main game, but time constraints prevented it from being finished by launch. In his words, "I felt that, 'Okay, there were too many things to do and to finish.' So we said, 'Ok, let's take a portion of the game that was planned and we'll give it in DLC.' We'll remove some stress to the team while giving more to fans and people who like 'Assassin's Creed.'"

Opiate and charlequin are dead on in this thread. So few people buy DLC that it makes more sense to sell to the people who will buy anything at a high price than it does to sell to people who want reasonably priced content, because most of the latter group straight up won't buy anything. It's a way to bleed more money out of people who will already purchase, who would spend more than $60 on the game if they could.

It works even when collector's editions aren't enough, and it's the reason why most collector's editions don't include all the DLC that is also coming out. If you're devoted enough to a game to buy a collector's edition, they reason, you might be devoted enough to buy more even after you purchase it. That's why Capcom, for instance, only gave away one set of costumes with the overpriced SF4 Collector's Edition. Why keep consumers from spending more money when some will certainly be thankful for the opportunity to give you their wallets?

I doubt things are going to improve in the future.

Ubsisoft for what they have done with AC2. I mean to take 2 chapters out of the story to then "sell" as DLC is a total joke. What will they think of next? How about having to buy a dlc code to even start playing the game in the fist place.................

best to just abandon the "gotta catch em all" mentality now and avoid all shades of horse armor.

for paid content done right see Trials HD

I try to think of DLC as tax for stupid people. Only instead of the money going to the government to build roads and schools, the money goes to game companies to build more games.

If a game is overly DLC'ed I just choose not to buy the whole thing, unless it's one of the 1-2 games per year that I'll get period.

I will say this about DLC: if all of this stuff doesn't work on whatever the next gen systems end up being, I'm retiring from consoles.

worse now that publishers will purposely keep assets out so they can use it for pre-order bonuses.

This is what personally bothers me the most...the thought that we are getting less for our already high priced 60 dollar games, because some fuck in marketing thought of a way to nickle and dime customers even more.

If it's finished, I want it in the fucking game.

These companies pull this kind of shit, and then have the nerve to bitch about people trading/renting/buying used. I've pretty much been gamefly only this year because of this DLC shit. I've kept a few games, but have bought nothing new and don't plan on buying new for some time (Okay, okay, I'm still buying the ME2 new but sue me).

What it comes down to is that it costs a certain amount of money to create new content. Some content can require the efforts of a dozen salaried employees. In order to make money from that content, you have to look at how many people will buy it - which will generally be a very small subset of your playerbase, and price isn't usually the deal breaker. So you charge a little more to sell to a lot fewer people to make a profit that makes the entire effort worth while.

My problem is when DLC is used as a way to control the secondary market. Purposely holding back content as day-one free DLC to screw people who buy the game used. Yeah, if you buy the game new, the content is free, but what happens five years from now? Can you still buy the game new? Are the DLC servers still running? Will the DLC work properly on a partly backwards compatible Xbox 720 or whatever?

I like how Bethesda does it. Generally good value for the money and then collect everything up in a disc based version for people who worry about how DLC will work in the future. Just wish the Oblivion GotY edition included all the DLC rather than just Knights of the Nine.
Shivering Isles is in there, on the PC, at least. Dunno about horse armor and he like, though.

I bought a couple of things for the 360 Oblivion when all I had was that version. Spell Tomes and whatever that castle was. Those were cheap enough that I'm not kicking myself over them for less than a coffee at Fourbucks. I also bought a few map packs for Halo 2/3 and even a planet in the Xbox KOTOR, if I'm not mistaken.

I've quit buying DLC though; full games are so cheap these days if you wait a few months or merely own a PC.

DLC is just a bad deal.

i havent yet quite reached the point where i would say DLC in general sucks, there are many games i would love to get any DLC for (Demon's Souls mainly...), but then again... i bought some DLC for Dead Space that supposedly gave me a brand new amazing weapon, well, it was exactly the same weapon that was already in the game, only more powerful. so i actually paid real money to make a weapon do more damage. fuck.
