How did previous launch console games compare to their maxed-out PC versions?

This is why I expect to see some impressive technical achievements with new consoles.

Raises the baseline.

PC gamers have been patiently (or not so patiently) waiting for next gen to arrive for this reason. It will be better graphics for all, even if the specs of the next gen machines don't match current high end PCs.
 
here's the difference:

developers are used to making games on pc. 360, especially, has unified development parity with the pc. ps4 is moving into this direction. the tools, pipelines are mature. unreal engine is damn-near a standard. next-gen development is going to be SMOOTH. it's not like moving from emotion engine to x84.

next-gen games will look great out the gate. the engines will easily scale. look at high-end pc games right now. this is more or less what we can expect.

The main problem with this thread is simply the fact that many developers began developing for consoles first and adding PC ports as an afterthought.

A true apples-to-apples comparison is very difficult to make for this reason, and the thread is just largely pointless because of it.

Now, if you ask whether or not equivalent-cost PCs could run console launch games at the same (not higher, which most PC users do) settings, yes, PCs could always do that. I mean, try playing Oblivion with the same screen resolution and the same settings as the 360 version.

Personally, I find it utterly impossible to play anything on PC at 1280x720 after getting used to the clarity of 1920x1080. Plus, y'know, it's a bad idea to begin with when your monitor's native resolution is 1080p....

Yeah that's a problem with fixed pixel displays. You wouldn't have that problem on a CRT monitor.
 
I don't know. Early Playstation games were pretty beastly. And then the PC hit its GPU stride, and, well, lol.

Yeah pretty much this. I find it interesting that Nvidia put all their money behind Sega when they developed their first graphics card, the NV1. The NV1 used quadrilateral rendering instead of triangles, and most of the games that supported it were ports of Sega Saturn titles like Virtua Fighter, Panzer Dragoon, and Virtua Cop. The NV1 even had Sega Saturn controller ports on them which was actually pretty sweet.

But of course quad based rendering didn't take off on PC and was superseded by triangle based rendering very quickly, so Nvidia's first card was quite a failure. It's still pretty cool piece of hardware though, probably the closest relative the Sega Saturn had.
