How do you justify traveling?

I never traveled or took vacations as a child either. Family

IMMENSELY stressful.
First is leaving the house for a large period of time and all the dangers involved with that.
Having a sequence of trains, planes, etc to catch.
Being somewhere where if something is lost you have a greater chance of never retrieving it, i.e. forgetting something at a hotel.
Being in an unfamiliar location itself is stressful.
Not to mention knowing that I am spending a lot of money on something is stressful.

:lol

Just go and fucking enjoy yourself. Nobody lay on their deathbed and thought 'Damn, I wish I hadn't traveled as much. Think of all those video games I could have bought!'

I mean...:lol

Too late. He went. And he may be thinking those very things on his death bed.

I'm make plenty of money, what else am I going to spend it on. More video games?

Seeing new places is fun, and in general I think makes you a better person. You can't look at is a a money spent vs. time ratio. I think it should be money spent vs. total enjoyment. Like, how many movies would I have to see to get the enjoyment of 1 vacation. For me, it would be easy to justify when looking at it like that, as there aren't enough good movies in all the world.

Going to China on the 23rd, it is going to be awesome.

Vacations are not for people on tight budget, that is for sure.

I agree, but the OP is arguing that he really didn't get any enjoyment out of it, and especially not for the amount of money he paid. He also says that he stresses out over travel, so that doesn't help his cause much either.

Enjoy China. I was there a few years back and had a great time. It's an amazing country with way too much to see and do in one visit.

I hear this a lot, but I don't get it. I've been to plenty of places but I don't feel enriched or anything. I have lived different places and that changed me. But being somewhere else temporarily is irrelevant. Me standing in front of some historic landsite and seeing a picture of it are equally irrelevant.

You're mistaking sight seeing with traveling. You sight see for the wonder of it, you travel, meaning stay put and try to enjoy the culture for the new experiences.

That said I still think you're wrong. I can think of quite a few famous spots I've been to that simply are not comparable in person to pics you see on a screen. Then again you're stuck in your mindset and nobody's changing anyone's mind, so one has to wonder why this is still going on.

This thread has been a riot since it first went up. Why are people trying to make a hermit understand why it's a good thing to go out and see new and different things for the sake of living? I mean really?

Now I'm a hermit? I'm not speaking of never leaving the house, I'm speaking about going ridiculous distances and spending ridiculous amounts of money for what purpose? I am trying to figure out what is gained by these things. There is plenty to see and do right where I am. There's no significance of me spending a couple of days in another country that I have no interest in spending my life in. And really, it's about the ridiculous costs of just traveling a couple hours away. You can't be serious. People apparently do this all the time like it is okay, but you can really consider that "okay"? I just can't.
Then what is the problem? You aren't spending thousands of dollars. If this was about how people spend unnecessary gobbs of cash on trips when they don't need to spend so much when traveling, I'd totally be behind you. However, you seem to be more concerned that you have to actually have to go any where at all and want people to justify you going anywhere. Which is what I don't get since that's hermit behavior. Traveling is usually not about whether you are content with what you have where you live. It's about seeing and doing something different. From what I read you're spending about $500 which is less than Krazy Ken wanted you to spend on a PS3.

I think we have honestly gone off track with two topics of my insanity and GOTTDAMM travel is expensive.
I mean, shit. That's a lot of dollar bills, y'all.

But that's what people do. Pay bills, hopefully have some left over, and do something they enjoy with it.

Travel is just one such thing, and at that point it's all subjective. ;)

''why spend money on travelling when i can buy new games!'' really? not only that, but you're also a white guy living in japan. you actually fit the stereotype! oh my god. this thread is so depressing

If you are traveling on the weekend, the Seishun Mega Dream overnight bus from Osaka should be available for around 4000 Yen or less (one-way), they puts you at under 10,000 Yen round trip.
If you don't mind forgoing comfort and don't really need access to a hotel room during the day then you might want to look into spending your nights at internet cafes or in cheaper love hotels (there are plenty available in Shinjuku). Just store your loot in a locker and sleep in a net cafe where a shower is available. You can easily spend a night doing that for 2000 Yen or less. If you want a bit more comfort you can get a love hotel room for around 3000 Yen just for the night as well if you look around.

Unless you are planning on eating out with friends and going to Izakayas every night, you should be able to manage 1000 - 2000 Yen per day for food and drink so long as you don't mind eating at Matsuya or Yoshinoya or at convenience stores for every meal.

I've done the Tokyo <--> Osaka weekend trip dozens of times and if you don't care about being really comfortable for the whole trip you can get by with 20,000 - 30,000 Yen travel expenses.

This is the best/cheapest option you have.
Zefah obviously knows Tokyo very well.
Not everyone has the balls or lifestyle to live in Tokyo like this ( I figure it would be "below" most people to try this...)
I have stayed in Tokyo on budgets like that and it was interesting, but I don't see how making a special trip to do this would justify the pain.

The only problem I see with your plan is entertainment/shopping. Add 1 bar and a few train rides and a T-shirt or something and you are back to at least 20000Yen+ per day.
You would have to be almost monk-like in your spending and travel habits.

Why not just save up a month or so more and actually have alot of fun?

That said, I just bought a ticket to China for 600$...

I feel bad for him now :( Editing all your posts like that is sad, especially when you've been quoted so many times already.

He was making odd statements about how awesome he was that were just weird as well. When I came back into the thread, he had gone back through the whole thing to edit all of his posts. Very strange.

Did the OP finally remove the stick from his a$$ and wallet and go on the trip or did he sit at home refreshing NeoGAF?

He went. The thread was apparently bumped because he got back. He spent his money and said he had nothing to show for it and he felt it was a waste.

So what you are saying is. Instead of trying to have sex with beautiful women, just don't bother because watching it on the internet is just the same?

Sorry, but seeing a picture of the castle in Prague and the charles bridge is not the same as going to it then walking back to town along the bridge. I won't forget that experience. But If I showed you a picture and told you about it, you'd forget it pretty quick.

I'm going in 2 weeks. I'm going to fucking ride an elephant. AN ELEPHANT.

MY thoughts exactly. It's hard to explain to anyone who cares little for experience, but there's something more to a location than just what you 'see'. I'm not trying to get all spiritual or anything, it's just that visiting some historical site or point of interest is more fulfilling than just seeing a picture. Often the experience of a location is more than just it's image - the locale, the smells, the sounds can be a part of it too.

For sure, there's the whole achievement side of things, having just gone there, as well as being able to say you've been there. But it's more than that also. I'm not sure what it is, but the mere fact you made the journey there accounts for something.

I felt I was going nowhere in thought and being too negative for no reason. I started to play a role for the sake of playing it without really thinking about what I was saying. It felt cathartic to destroy my own negativity.
To sum it up, it felt good to go but it also felt empty at some points. This is obviously a personal thing that I have to work on and not a world opinion that I thought it was. I got what I needed out of the thread and can now work on bettering myself.

Well china is fun!
